Bruce Lee starrer 'Enter the Dragon' is set for a noir-style remake from 'The Shield' exec producer Kurt Sutter.
Warner Independent Pictures has set "The Shield" exec producer Kurt Sutter to write and make his feature directing debut on "Awaken the Dragon."
Noir-style remake of "Enter the Dragon," the 1973 martial arts classic that made Bruce Lee a global star, will be produced by John Wells, Fred Weintraub and Paul Heller.
John Wells Prods. is based on the Warner lot, and Weintraub and Heller were producers of the original WB-distributed film.
Sutter said he's writing "Awaken the Dragon" as a contemporized drama about a lone FBI agent who pursues a rogue Shaolin monk into the bloody world of underground martial arts fight clubs.
Original film starred Lee as a martial artist who's drafted by law enforcement to participate in a martial arts tournament and infiltrate a drug smuggling operation run from the host's heavily guarded island.
"I'm a huge noir fan, and this plot lends itself to the film I want to make," Sutter said. "I wanted to set it in these underground fight clubs where the action is really raw and expose the brutality of Shaolin kung fu. This will be more 'Raging Bull' than 'Crouching Tiger' in its viciousness."
Sutter will look to discover a fight star in the role of the monk and cast an established American actor to play the FBI agent.
Sutter, who'll be a consulting producer for the final season of "The Shield," is writing the FX pilot "Forever Sam Crow," a drama set in the world of outlaw motorcycle clubs. He's completing the script to "Inland Saints," a Paramount Pictures drama to be directed Joel Schumacher and produced by Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Amusing since ETD had elements that made it a remake of "Dr. No" in some ways... is nothing sacred?

Nah, this one has potential. They're just taking the basic skeleton, think A Fistful of Dollars or Last Man Standing in relation to Yojimbo.
This project doesn't sound like it'll be pissing on the Bruce Lee legacy at all. The zillion Bruceploitation films all ready dug up and ass-raped Bruce's corpse anyway. Game of Death being the worst with FOOTAGE FROM HIS ACTUAL FUNERAL.
Have you not seen The Shield? It is awesome gritty television. One of the best shows on TV at the moment.

I haven't seen The Shield.
You make a good point about Yojimbo/Fistful of Dollars though. Yojimbo was actually remade (or the story told again) in Youth of The Beast (1963), before "Fistful" and Leone originally refused to admit that it was based on Yojimbo.
The funeral footage in GOD was the height of tastelessness IMO.
Perhaps this is a "reimagining" rather than a "remake".

Enter The Dragon has already been remade back in the early 80's as Force:Five with Joe Lewis and Benny Urquidez. got a fairly large uk cinema release,remember watching it at my local cinema and it breaking down with 20 minutes left. Directed by Robert Clouse,available only on a shitty aussie fullframe horrible looking dvd.

This is really taking the piss, how dumb do these people think cinema audiences are? This is no remake, it's a completely different film that they've slapped the word Dragon in the title so they can get some free hype/publicity by claiming it's a remake of the most famous martial arts film of the 70's (in the west anyway).

The upside of this is when it's eventually made and released we may get an improved SD/HD release of the original with the original theatrical cut

'Force: Five' is utter pants.
Best forgotten.
This 'Awaken the Dragon' doesn't sound like a remake really... I'm sure it'll be nothing like 'Enter' and as Grim says the story oultine came from 'Dr. No'.
I'm glad they're doing something very different.

I saw a UK tape in a charity store once, looked old so might have been the uncut tape.
