I've had my fears about this ever since JJ Abrams was brought on board but the idea of making a film based around the early days of original enterprise crew sounds fantastic.

Fingers crossed it will be the first great Trek film in 17 years, since "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country".

Cool. Winona Ryder is a decent actress, hopefully this will bring her decent roles again.

Was not funny the first time you said such bile. You have seen a (1) film he made, nothing more classic. Becuse he is such a pathetic director if you say so.

The Age of Innocence and Girl, Interrupted - dispels any illusion of Ryder having acting talent.

Ryder was great in both Beetlejuice and Girl, Interrupted.

As for Beetlejuice. I re-watched parts of my UK R2 DVD the other day. OMG it's an atrocious mess. For those who like grain you'd be pressed to like the extreme grain in this film but that's not the worst thing. Virtually every minute of the film there are really bad white flecks and marks all over it.

I cannot believe Warner considered this an acceptable DVD release. Sure it's an old DVD (where is the SE?) but this is just awful. Ironically reading reviews of the time it was released they all rave how good it is. Even by standards of the day it sucks.

A lot of early Warner DVDs are pretty bad. I'm still waiting for a remaster of Michael Collins (which is on a fucking flipper), you'd think that they'd be eager to re-issue such a film considering the pedigree of the director and the cast.

Agreed. It is a pity.

I guess Warner have so many DVDs to re-release. They have hundreds of woeful back catalogue titles that need re-releasing. I'm still waiting for a "A time to kill" to be released not on a flipper.

My earliest Warners DVD was Batman. The DVD authoring was fine but the print was surprisingly beat up in places. That said, I prefer those early transfers to the laserdisc derived tripe like Dragon The Bruce Lee Story and Lifeforce

I remember reading that the Japanese DVD of that is anamorphic. Add 1941 (Spielberg) to that list of library titles with LD transfers (Star Wars OOT too).

There's also open-matte titles that need remastering, like Peter Weir's Fearless.

So many films get open matte releases only. Often 1950's films that the studios assume are 4:3, like This Island Earth, which should be presented at 2.00:1 so you can imagine the empty space on that one!

I don't know about the Japanese DVD but the German DVD of Lifeforce is apparently anamorphic, using the shorter and partially rescored US theatrical version

This Island Earth is terrible, the only version worth seeing is Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.
