Grim You must walk around with your eyes shut the bottom fell out of HD DVD players a long time ago. You could get a brand new Player and 7 HD DVD's for £70 a month back from many big sites.

Why would I spend £50 on a worthless HD-DVD Player? If I only wanted an Upscaling DVD Player I'd plump for an Oppo DVD Player.

I meant £400-500. That is how much the only Player is likely to cost I am interested in. I've waited since Jan 07 I'm certainly not about to throw in the towel on a whim now and get a lesser (IMO) product.

They're worthwhile if you want an upscaling DVD Player but not if you want an HD Player, that said few HD Players are SD DVD Multiregion so you'd be better off still buying a DVD Player instead.

All HD-DVD studios have said they'll now support BD so you'll be better of waiting. If you've already got one then enjoy the good times getting cheap discs or get a Combo Player, like me (eventually).

It's incredible when you read on various forums how these worthless £50-£60 players are flying off the shelves everywhere-amazon had 999 in stock yesterday and today had 48.Clearly these people are all fools and Bradavon is correct i agree with Romero,absolutely classic post,especially as Brad has banged on about the large library of hd-dvd titles available and indeed is still buying them himself.

Well that depends why they're buying them. I said they'd make good Upscaling DVD Players, but obviously people who're still buying them want a cheap way to get into HD and aren't thinking about longevity of their investment.

Speaking personally I'd rather spend £500 on a Player I know will last than £50 on a defunct format. If I were to buy a HD-DVD Player I'd only be interested in the top of the range model too.

Are you for real? From a DVD perspective there isn't anything remotely special about the Toshiba HD-DVD Player. Here is a Panasonic DVD Player for £80:

You could buy Upscaling DVD Players as early as 2005, probably 2004. I know because I own one and I'm sure it's a better DVD Player than this cheapo Toshiba.

I was responding to Grim's question.

It stands to reason I'm going to talk about all the ways to get into HD. Combo Players are just as valid as any of the other routes. It's not problem no one else on this forum considers Combos to not be a serious way to get into HD.

they are buying them because they are a great deal. £50 for a player with numerous cheapo discs available,if they get 5-7 years out of them it's fucking bargainous.we are talking £50 here,fucking pennies lol!

As I said Toshiba HD-DVD Players "from a DVD perspective" aren't anything special or to be precise unique. I don't need to have owned one to know an Upscaling DVD Player is an Upscaling DVD Player, some have better Upscalers but they're still just Upscaling DVD Players.

I've not commented on how good they are at playing HD-DVDs because like you say I don't own one.

Well you are wrong, upscalers rary in quality vastly. I have owned a lot now and some are crap. You obviously have not had more than one, which you "Think" is better than the Toshiba and every other upscaler including my Oppo, which is as good as they come beating upscallers far better than your player ever will be.

Now show me a report of an end-user (note not review) saying their Player has a shit Upscaler?

Like the quality of LCD TVs it's all so subjective to the point everyone thinks their Upscalers look amazing. I pay attention to properly written reviews but otherwise everyone says their Upscaling DVD Player is the dogs nadges so I don't tend to bother reading any of it.

The same goes goes for Audio quality on MP3 Players.

It doesn't mean it's wise to buy into a dead format. That's the only reason they're cheap. If people want a cheap/quick way to get into HD then that's there decision. I'm just giving my opinion it's a quick fix instead of a long term solution.

I still pick up the software but wouldn't get a HD-DVD Player which will only now have a finite number of HD titles it can play.

Me-my panasonic bedroom machine is nowhere near as good as my toshiba.my daughter's asda one via hdmi is nowhere near as good either.

It's not a dead format. It plays SD discs as well. It upscales better than Oppo and whathaveyou. It allows to buy approximatively 800 HD discs at lesser prices than SD discs. And... if you got the right bargain... the damn player came FREE !

So I'm sorry, the losers are anyone who bought a Blu-Player other than PS3 (not future proof), and anyone plucking 100 $ into a regular shitty SD player, why would you do that when you can get a HD-DVD / SD player for free (deduction made of the money they give you back + the 12 HD-DVDs they give you free).

my daughter's asda one via hdmi is nowhere near as good either.

I tend to discount those. Fair point about the Panasonic though.

I wouldn't pay £500 for a BD Player but a Combo is quite different it will play all the finite number of HD-DVDs and will still be a BD Player longer after HD-DVD disappears. So no contraction I'm afraid.

You seem to know your stuff so I could well believe you. I have no interest in either a Toshiba or Oppo but will still be interested read further.

The upcoming Panasonic and Sony Players will be Profile 2.0 but otherwise I take your point. The Panasonic BDM50 is due next month.

Blade Runner is now as Salty said it would be back to it's usual £17.99.
