That comparison is tosh (unless I'm missing something), it's not comparing picture or audio quality at all but instead crap like load times. Very interesting the LG BD300 comes out next.

p.s - The day it plays HD-DVD, isn't shaped like a brick, doesn't come with useless (for me) gaming functionality and doesn't have a remote shaped like a games controller I'll consider one.

I also hear (but don't know if it's true) that it's louder than most BD Players. It's more than load times and picture quality IMO. The PS3 is completely the wrong shape for one. It has to be Home Cinema shaped for me to be interested, hence for me, it's so not the best BD Player.

Considering the hardware in the PS3, it's not surprising it does so well. It's mostly overkill for BD but it's there and thus it copes well with playing BDs.

If I was buying a BD Player today I'd probably get the Panasonic BDM-550 (or whatever it's called). It's Profile 2.0 and can even on-board all audio formats (so can the PS3) but has Analogue outputs (something the PS3 doesn't have) meaning I could keep my existing Amp and still get Lossless audio. It's very, very rare to find a BD Player with full on-board decoding and analogue outputs.

I wonder when Toshiba will release their first BD Player. They sell HDTVs but nothing currently to go with them.

How loud is the PS3 though? Pretty critical aspect of Blu-ray playback that's not mentioned in that article.

That remote is a lot better than the PS2 ones. My brother has one, it's awful. Barely better than the controller.

Or the picture and sound quality. Even more important. That report is rubbish, it spends more times on disc load times.

Unless we're talking minutes I don't give a damn how long it takes to load a disc.

i must be deaf,as i can't hear a peep from my usa ps3 when a blu-ray is playing. clearly the ps3 is the best blu-ray machine.like i said,excellent report.

My PS3 is also silent. nothing like my old Xbox, that's for sure.

BTW, there's a new Logitech all-in-one remote control that gets pimped in the commercials alot. I tried looking it up on their website, but couldnt find the answer, but is it also compatible with 360 and PS3? I dont have remotes for either, but when the logitech goes down in price a bit, and supports 360 and PS3, it seems like that would be a good buy.

Didn't it used to be much louder? There are definitely reports of loud fans online. I've never heard one though, so bow to you experienced folk.

The DMP-BD50 was replaced by the DMP-BD55. Its not odd that it could have a different name in America, a lot of Panasonic goods have different names over there.

I didn't know there was a replacement. How does the DMP-BD55 improve on the DMP-BD50? I see it now has 7.1 instead of 5.1 analogue outputs. Anything else?

The DMP-BD35 looks impressive, even adding Profile 2.0 over the DMP-BD30.

I've got the original 60GB version and it's pretty silent, unless I'm playing a game on it and it needs to crank the fan up a notch, but even then it's nowhere near as loud as an Xbox. Blu-rays don't make it crank up its fan

As long as your PS3 is well ventilated, it's very rare for the fan speed to go up a notch. There were some problems with the initial run of 60GB launch machines, but that was quickly sorted out.

One thing in the PS3's favour is the regular software updates. The PS3 is fully Profile 2.0 compatible, and it was one of the first machines to be.

I believe there are some audio formats that may not be fully supported, except via HDMI and with a compatible receiver, but there should be no reason to think that picture quality will be inferior at 1080p. There are plenty of custimisation options, including full range RGB on/off, and super white settings so that you can get the best quality image on your HD TV.

Even the Criterion Collection use PS3 for their compatibility testing!
