European Union celebrates first day of Lisbon Treaty

The European Union celebrated on Tuesday the entering into force of the Lisbon Treaty after nine years of "battle" including referendum rejections in France, the Netherlands and Ireland. It also survived a referendum rejection in Ireland last year when the Irish reversed their first decision in a second vote held in October.

* What was the fucking point in all the referendums then? I definitely heard "if one country says No, it's dead".
* What also was the point in Ireland saying No, if they only went and said Yes the second time?
* Surely that makes it even not a Yes vote?

We had a referendum here in Holland. The people spoke and said 'no'. They changed some words around in the bill, didn't ask the people again, and now we have a 'Lisbon Treaty'. Well done(!)

They did that in Ireland too (!) The Irish voted "no", so that should that be the end, not have the vote again until a desired result is got

The UK was promised a referendum.

The UK did not get a referendum.

The Labour government lied.

We ARE under European control.

Welcome to democracy.

Say what you will about America but imagine if they tried to pull this one there? Generally Western European democracies are good but this clearly stinks.

As it happens I was very undecided whether I thought it was a good or bad thing but clearly the people shouldn't just be ignored.
