New Dr. Who series...

Is anyone going to see the new dr. who series? I may do
I'll admit I'm not a Dr. Who fan much, but know "vaugely" about it and like sci-fi (Red Dwarf, Hitchhikers etc).
Also IMO Christopher Eccelston (based on the trailers) looks far too young to be Dr. Who and really Dr Who should be older and more "eccentric" (like Tom Baker, John Pertwee), and even "uncool" to a certain degree. The new series looks too hip. Does that make sense?
I didnt find find Billie Piper attractive at all when she was a "pop" star, now she is average IMO but nothing more.
She still looks very young, maybe too young to be his assistant (she's about the same age as me)
How are they going to do the "regeneration" scene at the start? I mean they can't have Paul McGann "becoming" Eccelston?
EDIT: I've read that isn't true. There's no "re-generation" of Paul McGann into Chrsitopher Eccleston this time.

I was a huge Dr. Who fan for all of my teenage years and still am to an extent.
The BBC have tried this once before with Paul McGann and it was a flop. It was rubbish also. Partly because it was to flash IMO anwyay. There was also another movie (that I guess was shown in the cinemas?) back in 1966 with Peter Sellers playing the Doctor.

Exactly this is my biggest worry with the film. For all the reasons you've mentioned above.
I hope I'm prooved wrong but Christopher Eccelston is all wrong. On the one had they've retained the telephone box which is weird as it now looks very out of place next to the leather jacket.
The sad thing is it's obvious to fans who is the best choice - bring back Tom Baker or the very least use him as a blue print.
I've enjoyed all the Dr. Who's (except for McGann) but Tom Baker was the creme de la creme.
As far as I can tell if you take the telephone box out you don't have Doctor Who anymore. I hope the sonic screwdriver for example returns.

Does she need to be drop dead gorgeous? Most of the Doctors previous assistants have been average to pretty looking.
They've also been younger than the doctor. I don't have an issue with her.

Good point. I'd not thought about this.
It will be a huge flaw to not have the regeneration scene. Paul McGann only needs a cameo role. They managed it in Paul McGann's TV movie. Sylvester McCoy had a cameo.
What's your source about the lack of regeneration scene?
To answer your question yes I'll be checking this out (and I barely ever watch TV shows). I'll probably video it though.

I read it on one of those Teletext pages, their TV reviewer had seen the show at a preview and there's no regeneration scene.
Yeah you're right all the assistants have been younger than the Doctor but not as young as Billie shirley?
You're right Tom Baker was excellent. He had the right amount of eccentrcity about him.

From what I've read of the previews, hardcore fans (I'm not one though) will be disappointed. And its on at 7pm so its hardly going to be X-Files is it?

Maybe our expectations are higher though, I mean audiences have changed hugely since the last "proper" series in 1989. Also won't it be strange making the Doctor have an accent? Not that I don't like accents per se I don't mean to be rude, but none of the others had regional accents

)
He's supposed to be asexual though, which Russel T. Davies has kept in.

How could they possibly keep this in without it being shown after 9pm?

Huh? When I say asexual, that means he not meant to get *attracted* to anyone. So there can't be any sex in it

Thats how he's always been.

Is that what it means? LOL oops. I thought it meant he wasn't male/female.

I'm annoyed as I missed the 1st episode of the series  (well at least the 1st half of it anyway), so missed them setting the scene and stuff. My video didnt work
Brad did you see it? Any good?

Brad, stop it. You're killing me!!
Oh, and Peter CUSHING played the doctor in the 60's movies.....

First the bad stuff:
* It really pissed me off how not only did they do away with the regeneration sequence, now the Doctor has always looked the same, well since the 1800s anyway  . I can understand why they were reluctant to show us the regeneration sequence but they could've at least mentioned the Doctor changes form. There was this perfect opportunity were Rose was explained how the Doctor had been around for years but it was all the same bloody guy.
* Was it just me but those fake photos of Christopher Eccelston super imposed looked very dodgy indeed.
* Since when could the autons change their body shape? If memory serves me correctly they are live dummies with guns. Not once did they mention that is what they're called!
* I'm still not sure about that jacket.
Now the good stuff:
* The theme music is still as awesome as the first time I heard it well over 10 years ago. As soon as I heard it I was transported back to my childhood. It's up there with the start of Star Trek: TNG for me!
* I was pleased to see they'd portrayed the Doctor as arrogant and rude. The Doctor always though himself as better than the pathetic humans and he could be very rude at times.
* Christopher Eccelston is as eccentric as a fruit cake, great.
* It was funny in places. It made me laugh.
* The Tardis is unchanged and so is the sonic screwdriver. Okay so the tardis looks different inside but I can live with that (they've made it look more impressive but it still has the main central console).
It didn't "quite" feel like Dr. Who, hopefully some more episodes will help.
Personally I'd have preferred to start the series with one of the Doctors bigger foes such as the Daleks or The Master, or the icing on the cake The Cybermen. I loved those baddies.
It's clear the BBC for the first time in a long time are considering Dr. Who to be one of their main shows. It has had much more money thrown at it.
Overall I enjoyed it but didn't like how they messed with certain aspects (still at least they've done away with the bollocks of Dr. Who being half human from "The TV Movie"). I need to see some more shows to draw a better idea if I like this new 2005 Doctor Who.

I'll post you my video if you like? E-mail me (
bradavon78@yahoo.co.uk) your new postal address. I recorded it in SP so you should be able to play it fine.

Okay. What was so funny though?
Markgway wrote:Oh, and Peter CUSHING played the doctor in the 60's movies.....
Was there more than one? I thought Dr. Who started in the 60s so how come it was black and white originally? Why did they make a film so soon after the series started?

Hey,
I heard (read it on Teletext and stuff) Chris Eccleston has quit his role of Dr. Who (only 1 episode into the series) because he didnt like the pressure and feared being typecast or something like that.
Talks are going on to replace him for the next series with David Tennant (the guy from Casanova).
Will we see a proper "regeneration" scene in Series 2 then with an Eccleston cameo? Maybe...

HAHAHA YOU BELEVE THEM

I am 100% sure he has not quit, rumors are killing the net

Its not a rumor, its' true Romero. It was announced last night from the mouth of Eccleston himself and the BBC.

I guess contractually he has to make the series though? I guess they could bring back the regeneration sequence. They did leave it vague in the first episode. Interesting they're already planning a second series.
Typecast after only one episode is dumb. I did get the impression he was never 100% comfortable with being a more mainstream actor.
I'm not sure I believe the pressure part he starred in Cracker.

Well yes he has made the series (I think), its been shot and everything. His "replacement" will come next series.
Yeah it does sound a bit stupid, I've heard people say he planned to quit all along as well

Well this is incorrect:
"Doctor Who was relaunched last Saturday weekend following a 16-year hiatus."
Wow check this website out:

They've made a real side!
p.s - So is that a yes or no Grim?

its looking more and more certain that He has quit, sorry everyone  but really its the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard in my life, he seemed to be over the moon about getting the job, now he doesnt care? there has to be some BIG reason behind this?

Hey Brad did you see the 2nd episode? I liked it - quite funny
I liked the scene where the "cassandra" character says "This is what scholars called an I-Pod, on which are stored pieces of classical music" then they start playing Tainted Love by Soft Cell and Toxic by Britney
The episode had some good jokes.

The second episode for me while darker, deeper and more in depth was also less fun. I was actually a little board and I never am usually with Doctor Who.
The storyline was weak from a fun perspective but also stronger from a character development perspective. The scene where Jade (the tree) says she knows what the Doctor is was handled well. Having said that like episode one they can't stop themselves messing with the story, can they!
Since when was the Doctor the last timelord? Hello "The Master"? When we saw The Doctor regenerate for the first time we clearly saw galaphrie (sp?). This doesn't exist anymore I presume?
Now I've seen two episodes I'm starting to get used to the new Doctor Who. I guess it was inevitable they would change things.

Unless I'm wrong it looks like the Daleks are coming (yippey but can't they fly now?) but no Cybermen

Yeah I didn't understand when he said he was "The Last Timelord". Er, that won't be true in the next series will it as someone will have to replace him!
