Any ideas what might be causing this?

Only started today.

Check the wiring round the back of speakers and amp, if you have anything touching the contacts/speaker wire it can cause crackling, ie: hair/dust/cobwebs/dead insects.

The speakers are in the monitor.

The crackling occurs even if I plug in headphones to the tower.

Oh it's your PC you're going on about! I get the same problem sometimes when I play a file with Media Player Classic, what I then do is close the media player down and re-open it and the crackling is usually gone.

You could delete/reinstall the sound card drivers. Deleting in Device Manager and let it reinstall them should work but it may require the install files, if you do this.

There may also be a "defaults" button/tick box in the Device Manager Sound Card settings too.

I deleted the Realtek HD Audio Drivers and then rebooted. This seemed to work. But don't be surprised if I'm posting again soon... lol
