Cookie Monster not Cookie Monster?

In the new series of Sesame Street, Cookie Monster won't be seen eating so many cookies as part of an anti-obesity drive on the show, and will say "A Cookie is a Sometimes Food". Okay... he'll be shown "eating" more than cookies apparently.
Surely thats not new?
68M will be able to attest this I'm sure, 
but even in the 80's I remember the character would eat food other than cookies, and do songs about "healthy food" (ie fruit/vegetables) and stuff
