They'll cut it then they'll only release the cut version in the Western hemisphere and it will be the only version we ever see in HD with English subs. That's usually par the course for most Asian films these days. Remember the good old days when it was just HK action films that got cut to ribbons?

God, these Hollywood producer/distributor clowns are STILL recutting Asian after all of these years? Madness. I wouldn't be surprised if Harvey wanted to release blu-rays in 4:3 pan & scan with only a dub track.

I can't for the life of me understand why directors allow assholes like Weinstein to fuck around with them and their work like that.

It's very simple: You made a great movie. There's international demand for it. If a publisher wants to buy it, cool, but either they respect the original version, or just don't buy it! I'm sure if Weinstein had been denied when making such ridiculous demands, someone else would have scooped up the rights instead, and would have allowed a release of the uncut version.

Same thing for The Grandmasters btw. I'm glad I've seen the original in the cinema here in Hong Kong, and I've bought an uncut bootleg on BR, so luckily I'm safe. I won't bother picking up any cut or alternate release. Fuck that.

And I think that's where Weinstein is so fucked up in the head. He's afraid dumb folks in Ohio and Mississippi will be too stupid for the original uncut version!? Guess what!? They'll probbaly stay away from the cut version as well. As will many others, because...

...the audience that IS interested in the movie, which is us fanboys and movie lovers, will know Weinstein's version is butchered, and also won't bother watching/buying that release.

Harvey is a fucking idiot. If he would just release these great movies as they're supposed to be watched, the fanboys will lap it up, good word of mouth will spread, and only then will you have a chance of it reaching a wider audience. Now, the opposite is happening. Bad word of mouth is spreading, warning everyone to stay away.

I don't get what cutting is going to achieve - it's not like you can sell a film on it being 10 shorter.

The film opened here in Japan today - uncut. Quite a wide release, too. I'll see it when I have time.

Watched the film today. It's very, very, very good. And dark as hell. Clearly the director's best work so far.

It's also obvious now that Weinstein wasn't trying to make the film easier to understand - there's nothing difficult to understand about it - instead he would have cut the most gruesome parts off. But no amount of cuts could make this a happy or easy film because the darkness is all mental.

The bad: lame CGI train and landscapes, can be ignored for the most part though. Also Tilda Swinton was a bit like out of a Jean Pierre Jeunet / Marc Caro film (not a good thing).

The good: everything else. Acting. Atmosphere. Direction. The way the film builds up and transforms little by little is masterful.

Verdict: the best film of 2013? Maybe, maybe.

Worst movie I had seen in a long while and worst I have seen in cinema =/
