The Value of Original Japanese Movie Posters

Post by HungFist »

Here’s something I feel I need to share. If you live outside of Japan, you’ve probably seen both eBay sellers and actual poster shops listing old Japanese posters for sale. Prices are frequently in the $150 to $400 range. Are authentic Japanese posters really that valuable? Must be, right?

Well, generally speaking no. Some are, yes (think of kaiju and tokusatsu), but usually you’re just being ripped off with ridiculous prices. Here’s a perfect example.

This shop called “Japan Posters” prides of selling “100% original vintage-sourced Japanese movie posters” and being a licensed antique seller. “This license is only issued by the police” they explain. They say their posters are “sourced directly from all four islands of Japan. Our extensive network includes Japanese dealers, multigenerational businesses and collectors, who pride themselves on a Japanese culture of mastery, honesty and a love for poster art” and add “Almost all of our suppliers have this license.”

Seems like a very respectable shop. And they are not lying. They sell authentic posters. Prices seem justified considering all that, right?

Here’s one of their new arrivals. The original, authentic Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable poster. They are selling it for 37,100 yen.

I thought it looked awfully familiar, and I wasn’t mistaken:
https://page.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/au ... 1082984572

That’s right. Look at the damage in the corners. It’s the same poster that was sold on f*cking Yahoo Auctions (Japan's equivalent of Ebay) for 10,050yen ($75) two weeks ago. And now this poster shop is selling it for 37,100 yen ($280) for foreigners who don’t have access to Yahoo.

Fair enough, business is business. They are free to purchase and sell posters for whatever prices. But it’s annoying as hell for fans like me who frequently get outbid on Yahoo Auctions by someone who is willing to pay strangely high prices. Well, now I understand what’s going on.

Fuck, yeah.
I watched this auction go through the roof too. But the Sasori's (and other series like the Jingi's) are never really cheap.

Do you have photos of your posters collection?

Of course

I might start posting photos of my posters and new purchases here, together with prince info. Might prove helpful and good future reference for prices. Others are very much welcome to join me.

For starters, here's my copy of Female Prisoner Scorpion: Beast Stable (1973) B2 poster. Purchased April 2018 for 4,100 yen from Yahoo Auctions. I actually lost 5 or 6 auctions before finally getting it by using my wits and experience (I bid on the more expensive one of the two that were for sale at the same time. Of course, the remaining one then sold for much higher price 24 hours later like I had anticipated). There are pin holes and the bottom of the poster is missing a piece (about 1 cm tall and 10 cm wide) but it's under the bottom mask and hence not visible.

It's a very beautiful poster and this old photo does not do it justice.

Speaking of beauties, this Which is Stronger: Karate or the Tiger (1976) tatekan poster is one of my most treasured acquisitions. That is absolutely gorgeous! Purchased from Yahoo Auctions in August 2015 for 3500 yen if my memory serves me correct (I don't have a record of this).

Haha, love that Which is Stronger: Karate or the Tiger poster.
Reminds me of the Chiba ones (Karate Bearfighter and Bullfighter).
I got the Bearfighter one.

The most I ever paid for a Japanese movie poster on a Japanese auction site was the 13.000 yen I shelled out for HORRORS OF MALFORMED MEN on Yahoo Auctions Japan. Granted that was 12-13 years ago, so inflation needs to be taken into account, but it's still "cheap" compared to what certain scalpers try to charge on ebay.

I'd love to have that!

This is one of my favourites, really looks gorgeous on the wall. I don't have record of when I bought this and for what price, but I'd say about 4 years ago from Yahoo, and not for more than 1500 yen. You can see some damage in the top.

My Pinky Violence posters part 2: Speed Posters and Tatekan Posters

Inferno of Torture (Speed) (Yahoo Auctions, Apr. 2017, 1.000 yen)
Image

Girl Boss Blues: Queen Bee's Counter-Attack (Speed) (Yahoo Auctions, Jan. 2023, 3.000 yen)

Tokyo Drifters is an absolute stunner. That is one of my most treasured posters together with Karate/Tiger. I can't believe I got it for 1.200 yen. Has brown tape marks, but looks great regardless.

On another forum there was a bit of talk about 大会 posters. The first one I've got is for Toei Adult Film (Secret) Convention (成人映画(秘)大会) triple feature featuring History of the Shogun’s Harem (1968), Sex and Life (1969), and Two Bitches (1964). I’m guessing this might be from 1971 or 1972 from the word “porno”, which appears in the poster but wasn’t introduced to Japanese film vocabulary until summer 1971, and from the films being too tame and dated to be re-released any later than that. But I don’t know for sure. I picked this up 700 yen from Yahoo in Jan. 2020 together with some other posters from the same seller.

Image

I have another 大会 poster which is for a Lone Wolf and Cub 大会 featuring the first two films. I don't know when exactly it came out. I also don't know when I got this... must have been from eBay long before I moved to Japan. The photo likewise dates back to stone age.

Image

Speaking of Lone Wolf, I also have B2 for LW&C: Babycart in Peril. From Yahoo Jan. 2023 for 3.100 yen.
Here paired with Hanzo the Razor: The Snare, which I got from eBay more than 15 years ago.

The Mechanic tatekan (Yahoo Auctions, May 2023, 8200 yen) and a set of three B2 Bond posters (Yahoo Auctions, May 2023, 5400 yen in total, the third poster is The Man with the Golden Gun).

I got lucky with the three poster Bond set. The auction listing was a mess: fuzzy photos, no size specified and even the world "poster" was nowhere to be found. It was just listed as "Three Roger Moore Items". It took a risk with it and got three beautiful original B2s. I was especially pleased when I saw Japan Posters paid more for an identical Golden Gun poster alone at the same time (now offered for sale at their website for $300) and I got all three for less.

Those prices are shockingly cheap, even compared to what I saw these posters go for in 2008-2009 when I did most of my poster shopping on YAJ. 3000-5000 yen is what you'd usually pay for the better known Toei pinky violence titles. I wonder if the increasingly difficult accessibility of the site has anything to do with the lower prices. These days you need a VPN just to browse the regular site, which is now for Japanese IP addesses only. I can only imagine what getting into the adult section, where many of the best pinky/pinku goodies used to be hidden away, and for merely browsing which you needed an age-verified personal account, requires these days. Or maybe they got rid of that part of YAJ entirely by now.
