As long as the song is an original FROM said film that's all it needs to be nominated.

Are you saying that Take That could only be nominated if they're big in America?

A ridiculous suggestion.
I agree with you Mr. Mark :)

You do know Brad that Stardust is a U.S/U.K co-production right? You do also know that UK artists (some who weren't popular in american at the time) recording songs for UK films have been nominated and even won the best song Oscar before, right?

Take That probably didn;t get nominated because the studio couldn't be arsed to run a "for your consideration..." campaign to push the song into the academy's collective conciousness.

They were known of though right? Big difference.

Who?

What does that have to do with the Oscars? Golden Globes maybe but not the Oscars.

No you're the dumb fuck for thinking Take That of all bands would be nominated. Politics bollocks. Take That are not known of in America, even slightly, so what makes you think they'd be nominated.

I never said it was against any rules just that it wouldn't happen. Now whose showing shocking ignorance.

Oh, THAT'S nice!

Erm, because it was a decent song, and mostly songs that get nominated are shit, so when a decent one comes along it's not unreasonable to query why it was overlooked? Whether or not they're known in America is irrelevant. The film is part-American and was released in America and thus eligible. The Oscars don't nominate only people who've been "heard of" (whatever that means...?) If that were true then foreigners would never get nominated for anything.
Now whose showing shocking ignorance.
Stop the Q-tip when it meets resistance.

A Take That song was released into American charts, are you sure?

Sorry, honest mistake. It sounded like the usual pedantic Brad-esque demand.

Since when did only songs that have been on the charts only count as released and thus available to the public for consumption?

Brad, even by your own ignorant stubborness, this is an all time high. Stardust was a high budget U.K/U.S.A co-production, which means any song in it was just as eligible as any other US production. The "popularity" of the artist in the U.S has absolutely no bearing on its eligibility for nomination what so ever. If you don't get that, then you might as well just stop posting in this thread, because you clearly have no idea how the Oscars work.

Your argument doesn't even make any logical sense. On the one hand you seem to think that if the film isn't a U.S production, then it won't have had a high profile U.S.A release, nor will the songs in it be likely to be nominated - which is complete and utter bollocks. On the other hand you think if the recording artist is unknown, then the song will never get nominated - which is again complete and utter bollocks!

You see Brad, what makes your arguments so mind-numbingly moronic, is that it's the songwriters who are the nominees for the Best Song category - NOT the song performers, so it is the writers and the song's prominence in the film which can play just as an important role in the chances of nomination. You must have seen over the years that sometimes they would get a "guest" song star in to perform nominated songs just for that night only. Also, naturally many of these songwriters are not famous recording artists.

Anyway examples (note these are just the examples that stood out for me, obviously I am not going to research and list every fecking example possible):

UK or UK/USA film & Songwriters Example

Best Song Winner:

"Born Free" from Born Free - John Barry (music) and Don Black (lyrics).
(Matt Monro recorded the song , who admittedly was fairly famous stateside.)

Best Song Nomination:

"Cry Freedom". Music and lyrics: George Fenton and Jonas Gwangwa.
(Fenton and Gwangwa performed the song in the film)

Non-UK Example:

Best Song Winner:
"Never on Sunday" from the film Never on Sunday - Manos Hadjidakis.
That's a Greek song in a Greece/USA co-production!

Other Examples

One ceremony that you should remember was the 2000 Oscars, which in Best Song category featured 2 non-USA song entries:

"A Love Before Time" – Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Music: Jorge Calandrelli and Tan Dun. Lyrics: James Schamus.
(Schamus was the only American who worked on that song, Coco Lee recorded it.)

"I've Seen It All" – Dancer in the Dark. Music: Björk. Lyrics: Lars von Trier and Sjon Sigurdsson
(Performed by Bjork)

There will be Blood should win Best Film, but I suspect the overrated No Country for Old Men will win it.

As good as Daniel Day Lewis is in There Will be Blood and he is fantastic (as is the film). Johnnie Depp should win, he never should've been nominated for Pirates of the Shite though.

Sweeney Todd is a brilliant film and Johnnie Depp is so good in it, as is Helen Bonham Carter.

Angelina Jolie should win Best Actress, but she's not even nominated. It's absolute madness she was overlooked. Cate Blanchett and Julie Christie were very good in their roles but neither come close to the raw power of Angelina Jolie in A Mighty Heart.

Casey Affleck for Jesse James in a Supporting Role. I've only seen American Gangster of the Supporting Actress roles and I cannot even remember Ruby Dee's role.

Best Director is a hard one between There Will Be Blood and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. I'd have to give it to Julian Schnabel for Diving Bell and the Butterfly, it's such a wonderfully directed film and real pushes the boundaries. The Bourne Ultimatum should've definitely been nominated too. So what if it's a blockbuster? The direction is sublime.

I've not seen any of the Best foreign language films. I'm surprised The Diving Bell and the Butterfly wasn't nominated.

She wasn't in it much (played Denzel's Mum). More of a token nomination methinks. She's no chance of winning.

Agreed. That was it thanks. Hardly Oscar worthy. It's madness Angelina Jolie was passed up for Ruby Dee. It's nothing special at all.

Agreed. The cinematography in Jesse James is excellent.

It was a good night for Europeans, the 4 acting nods all went to Europeans. It's particularly good to see an actor from a foreign language film being one of them.

Unsurprisingly "No Country For Old Men" won Best Director and Best Film. It's way overrated IMO, not that I'm a Coen Brothers fan. "There will be Blood" is a considerably better film.

Not that great of a show last night, but a few truly good moments:

Javier Bardem's acceptance speech to his mama :crybaby:

Androgynous beauty Tilda Swinton being captivating, even when at a loss for words.

Diablo Cody's wild outfit and tattoo. Tacky chic. 8)

Glen Hansford and Marketa Irglova being so humble and gracious in their acceptance speeches. Was that an academy first, asking a winner to come back onstage to give her speech when she'd been cut off? Loved it.

Best line of the night had to go to Jon Stewart, who actually wasn't that funny overall. He hit the mark with his political comment: "Normally when you see a black man or a woman president, an asteroid is about to hit the Statue of Liberty."

Did you watch the entire show? I managed to one year, all four hours of it. My god it's boring!

Tilda Swinton does have an unusual look. I'm not sure I'd go as far to say Androgynous but I know what you mean. That is a funny quote :D

Don't know if I could say I actually watched the entire show. I had it on in the background the entire time I was grading papers. :P

As for Tilda Swinton looking androgynous, have you ever seen her in Orlando? Quite convincing.

No I've not seen Orlando. I'll look it up on IMDB.

Whose Colbert? I presume he's an American chat show host. I rarely find them funny myself.
