Name your Top 3 Guilty Pleasure Action films?

Post by bradavon »

We all know Terminator 2/The Matrix are serious & intelligent action films but what films you know are probably rubbish or complete turkeys do you still love?

Mine are (no order):

* Equilibrium - Gun Kata rocks!
* Rambo 2 - The plot is rubbish but boy the action is cracking.
* Underworld - Lots of cool gun action and Kate Beckinsale in leather. I am starting to wonder if I made a mistake selling this.

They don't have to be Western action films but no Asian Martial Arts please.

Rocky IV - THAT music. Sigh..
China O'Brien - Cynthia's a babe!!!
Bruce Lee Fights Back From The Grave - to hell with our nazi mods (I jest, I jest) this is one action film that's such a guilty pleasure it's a crime against nature!

I have always been of the opinion that there are no movies which are so bad that they are good. Why would I like a film if it was bad? "Rambo 2" and "Rocky IV" are great films. "Equilibrium" is shit and not even its acion scenes can save it IMO.

- Raw Deal
- Rocky 3 (pretty much the only Rocky where Rocky doesnt seem like a mentally retared guy... plus good fights and a great 'villain')
- Drive. Pretty much the best american martial arts movie yet, choreography-wise.

The expression was invented by/for people who don't dare to admit what they really enjoy in movies.

:D

I hate it when porn movies have dialogue it gets right in the way 8) . Why even bother? None of them can remotely act.

This is my thread so I make the rules :D . If you want to start a top 3 thread by all means do.

Besides I personally consider MA action to be a different genre to the more Westernised style of action. The Matrix for example despite having some martial arts in it isn't a martial arts film.

I love that too. It's one of the best Rocky's.

I said no martial arts :D but I'll allow that one. I've amended what I said above about Martial Arts as I wasn't very clear.

I like that too and had forgotten all about it. I'm not sure how much re-watch value it's got though. It is pretty poor though, as "so bad it's good" as The Fast and the Furious probably.

I've never seen this. How does it compare against Commando? More, the same or less cheesy?

I've thought of another:

Red Heat - I love this. Great inteplay between Schwarzenegger and Belushi.

The language alone would mean it could never be made today. That and Russians are no longer "the stock bad guy", plus films are too PC today to risk offending a nation.

p.s - I'm surprised no one has mentioned Commando.

I thought about Commando, but I actually like Raw Deal more.
As a kid I probably would have preferred Commando, cause it has Alyssa Milano in it, who I had a huge crush on, but now that I'm 31 and she's still a kid in that, that just kinda seems like an icky reason to like the movie.

Raw Deal is pretty much a basic Cop goes undercover for a personal vendetta kinda flick. But it's just entertaining. If I would have to score it, it would probably just score a 3 outta 5, as it's nothing really special... but whenever it's on TV and I catch it, I somehow end up watching it anyway :)

Speaking of Belushi, The Principal is another one of those movies which SHOULD be mediocre or bad, but is actually entertaining. Belushi is actually decent in this, which is hard to imagine when you watch the crap he's been making the last 10-20 years orso...

Wasn't she only about 12 in Commando? Girls still annoyed me when I was 12 (I think). I certainly didn't fancy any.

I think many 80s stars trouble to fit into a film world so different from what they made their name with. Belushi is one of them. I'd forgotten all about the The Principal. I cannot say I remember much about it.

I started this thread as I was thinking I've not got "that" many action films in my collection, mostly because I've only tended to keep the really awesome and intelligent ones (for the most part). That does leave out many still good fun action films, as long as they're not too poor.

I've just picked up Red Heat for £3.89 delivered. I'm surprised Red Heat doesn't have a bigger following when Arnie films like Commando do.

Another Guilty Pleasure would be:

Demolition Man

Not really. They're sports movies.

The Principal is one of my favourite films. Seriously, I've always really liked it.

Rocky III and IV are my favourites of the series.

Is The Last Boy Scout a guilty pleasure?

I thought this was popular in the cool stakes?

One of my fave action films.

@ IM: No shit!

I thought it was too. I cannot say I remember anything about it but I thought most people loved it.

Speaking of Seagal films, except for Under Siege are there any others which are considered decent action films?

Thanks Salty. I hear Out For Justice is cool.

Rush Hour 3 is anything but a Guilty Pleasure. I like Parts 1 and 2, and you guys know I'm no fan of much of Jackie's Asian work but my god Part 3 is poor!

Personally I thought The Mummy Returns was woeful and The Mummy just looked awful. Swordfish is okay but I've never worked out why it's so popular.

They meet the requirements of the thread though :D

That is very cool but then it went down hill IMO.

Did anyone else think the latter scene when Halle is in underwear she looked much sexier to just lying there with her tits out? I never have worked out the fuss over Halle being topless. It's completely non-sexual.

Sure she has lovely boobs but like I said the later seen she looks way hotter.
