Very sad. TBH I can't say that I liked his films though, aside from Ripley.
Oscar-winning director Anthony Minghella has died, his agent said Tuesday.
Agent Judy Daish confirmed the director's death but further details were not immediately available.
Minghella, who was 54, won an Oscar for directing "The English Patient," one of a series of literary adaptations that include "The Talented Mr. Ripley" and "Cold Mountain." He was recently in Botswana filming an adaptation of Alexander McCall Smith's novel "The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency."
2008 is really being the year for untimely deaths in Hollywood it seems: Brad Renfro, Heath Ledger, Patrick Swayze (probably) and now Anthony Minghella! R.I.P.

What's with this ridiculous trend of bracketing Bryan Singer in with the worst of Hollywood just because Superman Returns is a bit dull?

Nothing wrong with the X-men films - particularly #2. Apt Pupil is ok-ish, Usual Suspects is very good. He's not a bad director, just guilty of being a bit pretentious and drab.
It's not JUST because he's a bad director, but when I saw the idiot on The Making Off on the Superman Returns DVD, it just struck me that Hollywood is filled with these kind of dumbasses who somehow got very very lucky and are now given millions of dollars to screw up nice franchises.
I just really REALLY dislike him.

I thought it used to be that the mutants were treated like blacks!?
It used to be about the fear of the unknown, not being accepted, frowned upon, distrusted etc. Xenofobisme.
Dont really care if the guy is gay or not. He comes across as a totally clueless hyperactive bitch in that making-off docu, regardless of sexuality.

Well he said himself it's one reason he was attracted to the project, he felt he could connect. What's the difference between xenophobia and homophobia anyway, both are dislike/fear of something different.
Not sure if there is much difference, so didnt mean to disagree with your statement.
I just know that when I read the comics and it was about that theme of the mutants not being accepted, feared, outcasted, etc... the general consensus was that it was simular to the racial divide in society between black and white...

Both excellent. I also hear The English Patient was excellent too.
As to Brian Singer and his reasons for making X-Men unlike some I don't care what his motives were behind them or if they are really a about Gay Rights. So what! They're decent films, end of. Well the first two are anyway.
