All TVs have Amps in them for example. Unless I'm mistaken, you don't just use TV speakers so what do you use?

some have none at all, cuts cost and you dont have to make the set look like it has speakers. Still 99% do

My mates Dell has surprisingly good removable speakers. For him it's great as he doesn't want 5.1 and for Stereo speakers they're unusually decent. They would annoy me though as for late night viewing TV speakers are a must but the rest of the time they'd get in the way.

Yup I hate having the amp on sometimes as it kicks out sooo much heat

my room gets so hot its scary with a TV, Amp and a player or PC on, it gets as hot as hell on a summers day!

TV speakers do their job many times, I would cook to death without them sometimes

I have ordered a LG GGC-H20L combo drive.

I will cease buying software for a few months, it'll be entire hardware.

The plan:-
Upgrade my "gaming" PC and use the parts to build a HTPC.

On the shopping list:-
Core 2 Quad core Yorkfield
Current gen Nforce SLI motherboard
4GB DDR2-800 RAM
750-1000W PSU
Geforce 8800GS or 9600GT - w/ fanless cooling solution
500GB (or bigger) HDD
Auzen X-fi Prelude (or wait for their next gen card, which will likely have a C-media chipset. I'm getting sick of Creative's bullshit.)
Good quality HTPC case (I've had experience with cheap cases and they are shit.)

Eva, you only need a decent 500w PSU for that, the new nVidia and ATi cards are out this month and consider the Asus Xonar - less driver BS.

I didn't spot that. 750-1000W is some power usage and some drain on electricty, if it's not needed.

I remember the days when 220W was considered the norm and 300W was loads

I'll probably wait until last to pick a GPU, it'll be an Nvidia. Might upgrade the 8800GT in my "gaming" PC and slap that into the HTPC.

As for the sound card, it'll have to be Auzen - to support the HDMI v1.3 addon daughter board (whenever they actually release it).

Do you really reckon that 500W will enough for a SLI setup? I probably won't get a 2nd card, but I'd still like to have the option available if I changed my mind. I'd probably get a Nforce 750i board, like the EGA 750i FTW (somehow EGA have managed to achieve full speed PCI-e*16 SLI with that, despite the chipset only being designed for 8x (half-)speed in an SLI setup).

Why not ATi? With all of nVidia cockups and inconsistencies over video along with breaking aspect ratio scaling and the ridiculous 9xxx range I'm going to be having a long look at ATi's new offerings. The only negative there is that with the Haali renderer upscaling is broken with ATi, but on the other hand ATi is the only way to get DXVA in MPC-HC. ATi are also better with regards to audio via HDMI, for the next cards I don't think there will be HDMI 1.3 but it looks like they'll add the the small ranks of 7.1ch LPCM which is all that matters. Combined with a new version of their video platform it should be rather good.

For SLI you'll need more power of course but SLI is such a crock. I think everyone considers it at some point but by the time you can afford that second card the next midrange is out and twice as fast with more features, SLI doesn't add as much as it should and there are issues still. SLI is really just marketing and milking the benchmarked obsessed.

Clockspeed is only relevant within each generation of CPU as each does more per clock cycle than previous ones, there are also multiple cores now.

Because of that, I need to upscale my videos in FFDShow before sending them to the renderer.

Haali just seems to appear with updates from time to time.
I remembered something and did some digging. It's actually the fault of ATi driver updates but Haali should be able to fix it as the same resizing component in MPC was fixed recently by someone working on that. The problem is the bicubic resize using pixel shaders, if you bring up the OSD you'll see stuff like NN, SS, AA (x and y axis) etc. N means nothing scaled, S is the problematic upscaling and A is downscale with anistropic filtering.
Apparently forcing VSync on might help or removing Catalyst Control Centre, using a driver cleaning and just installing the display driver.

Understood. I knew about the multiple cores bit. You'd think they'd still do it anyway.
