Net firms in music pirates deal

Six of the UK's biggest net providers have agreed a plan with the music industry to tackle piracy online.

The deal, negotiated by the government, will see hundreds of thousands of letters sent to net users suspected of illegally sharing music. Hard core file-sharers could see their broadband connections slowed, under measures proposed by the UK government.

BT, Virgin, Orange, Tiscali, BSkyB and Carphone Warehouse have all signed up.

I'm with Tiscali. I’m reluctant to leave as the deal is an excellent one (£20 for Free 24/7 Calls and Unlimited BB). Hopefully this won’t become standard.

if they send me a letter i'll immediately drop from 20mb to 4mb-if they want to offer superfast speed they shouldn't be trying to threaten people.

Well said! However if you drop to 4Mb and continue I bet they'll cap you to 1Mb or similar, so you probably cannot win.

It's also worth pointing out, how low do they mean? If you're on a 20Mb BB or even 8Mb dropping to 1-2Mb will still be fine for downloading MP3s.

Why the fuck do you need 20Mb for bloody e-mail and simple web browsing? They offer it precisely so people can download illegal content. There is absolutely nothing legal that needs BB above 2-3Mb. Nothing I can think of anyway.

They're shooting themselves in the foot. Especially when BT (soon) and Virgin are going to offer even faster Fibre Optical Broadband. How often do you need to download a Microsoft Service Pack? .

The BPI has focused on educational efforts and limited legal action in recent years, in contrast to the US, which has embarked on tens of thousands of lawsuits against alleged file sharers.

I guess we should be thankful they're not taking the American approach. Which is doomed to fail.

I'm guessing Sky BB. How much do you pay extra for it? I'm on 8Mb. I could be on 20-25Mb with Bulldog but I don't want to pay the extra.

I'll see if I get the letter and if my BB speed drops to a noticeable effect. If so I'll have to seriously consider moving ISPs. My initial 12 month contract is now over.

i'm with Virgin,have been since they were telewest, i pay an exorbitant amount really, £11 phone line rental,£7 talk unlimited & £37 for 20mb Broadband XL. Funnily enough the cheeky fucks the other day mailed a flyer through my door offering new customers XL BB at £10 for 6 months then £20 a month thereafter. tbh i usually go with the flow and don't argue about bills etc. but this pissed me off,i fired off an email to customer services telling them they had a cheek posting the flyer the through the door of a loyal customer paying the amount i do and threatened to cancel. to be fair to virgin they rang the next day all apologetic and offering me a new deal where my total outlay has gone from £55 to £39 a month so a result at least.

I do, not that it matters, as I take full responsability if I got a letter, you shouldnt do it, simple really and if anything happens then so be it.

I buy pretty much everything I like, so no one looses out as the good ones get my cash when I buy the real thing, and the bad ones get deleted as they are worthless anyway.
Unlike most people who download tonnes and rarley buy anything, a cd, a dvd ever. I have thousands of cd's and thousands of dvds, so its not like I dont feel the need to buy any if I like them.

I would not moan for a heartbeat or feel picked on if I did get a letter, becuase if I download something I am breaking the law, tuff shit if I get in trouble I deserve it, as do others (some far more than others).

But many people do a lot more than people on this forum, we acctually do spend cash on cds and dvds unlike many Joe Publics who dont. I know many people who have never bought a cd or dvd in years, only pirates and downloads. I walk into friends houses and see rows of ugly pirates and it makes me sick, esspecially when I got the real thing cheaper than their crap pirate! I just got mine a while after them in sales.

Films, well they are a bit different, as there's not exactly films made with contracts for future films like a band etc..


Thing is downloading is now so mainstream they have to do something to try and stop the cash companies and people are loosing becuase of it. I cannot think of anything myself, but hell the next 5-10 years will be interesting as its only going to get worse and many people now dont buy a thing, 10 years ago they would have.

Well I'm sure it has in one way or another. I know that half of my favourite music wouldn't have been discovered and bought without the privilege of downloading, and also there are indeed people who simply download all music instead of buying any. The record companies probably should stop whinging about it though because as you can see from my example, downloading benefits them just as much as it negatively affects them.

I know people who used to buy dvds and cds all the time, they buy none now as they download the albums and burn them. I guess that means when they never buy a cd or dvd ever it never impacs any sales, bullshit as they aint paying for anything now thanks to downloading.

well i admit to downloading but hell the money i spend and have spent on dvds and now mostly blu-rays over the years i should be awarded a medal by the film industry this week alone i've bought the two lost boy films on blu, Beach of the Wargods german dvd and ordered the Starship Troopers blu-ray box set. so there's around £85 spent this week alone
