Banning smoking in public places

Post by grim_tales »

Good or bad idea?

I don't smoke, but IMO if some people want to its up to them so long as they dont do it near me ;) I remember on these forums Cooey was a smoker at one point - but he'd always said he tried to be considerate. :)
I try not sit too near some of the people in my local who smoke either (not everyone does).
Sarah-Jane smokes I think (even back in the day when I first met her when she used to serve drinks - not sure I agree with that :? ) Is that hygenic?

Good idea.

Still, being allergic to cigarette smoke doesn't leave me with much choice anyway. :D

It's not too bad.

It just prevents me from hanging out with people who smoke, because as soon as I get smoke in my lungs I start to choke.
And since 90% of my friends smoke...

Bah... Who needs friends anyway ?

i think (and I do recognise that this is purely my personal view) that people should be free to smoke where they want if they are in the majority (as in pubs should be able to choose whether they are none smoking or not and people can choose accordingly) but that anyone that smokes has to pay in full for any healthcare that is needed as a result of smoking. I also think this of obescity too. For the record I am both overweight and have been known to have a smoke once in a while...

I agree with Mark.

Ban it in all public places.

Some people say that smokers should be free to choose to smoke when they want... what about the people that choose to breathe clean air? That surely must be a priority.

If smokers want to smoke in their own house, then let them do it there. But leave public places where non smokers DON'T want to go home from stinking like hell alone!!

ok lets break this down -

1.smoking at home
2.smoking in the office
3.smoking outside the main door of the office
4. smoking outside generally (not in doorways)
5. smoking in pubs/clubs/bars
please feel free to add to the list.

i'm strongly for smoking to be allowed in 1 and 4 all the time and in 5 where the establishment chooses to be a smoking establishment. i believe the non smokers are a strong enough market force to make being voluntarily a non smoking establishment a viable option. in fact I know of a pub that has opted for exactly this and it works well.

I don't feel it should be banned in open air public places (such as the high street). If such a ban were to be put in place i would be found strongly campaigning for banning all cars from public places as I understand it to be a much greater risk (though I consider neither to actually be much of a risk at all compared to being in enclosed spaces)

I agree with you about 1, 4 and 5 Mordib. Most people drive but only a "minority" smoke. They're both pollutants but it dont think comparing car fumes with cigarettes is a fair comparison. One (for some) is an important mode of transport and the other is a recreational activity, no?

It should be illegal anyway, so it needs to be banned.

It kills and should be stoped! its a joke any country with a set of balls lets anyone smoke, I say lock people up for disobeying rules.

My mum is apparently going to die around now (the doctors said about 1 year agao she had a year left) she hasnt yet, but if she didnt smoke she wouldnt be that way.

I personally want to kill people who smoke near me at the bus stop or on the bus, but I dont want to go to jail! they should for killing me!

If I stood at a bustop and lit up a pipe full of toxic shit and it stunk, would they like that? no! double standards bastards the lot of them and I hope they all die. (unless your a nice smoker, but thats very rare).

Dicks who smoke and drive need to be shot in the face if you ask me

Yes. Unless it's a privately licensed club. Any place that offers free public access should be smoke-free at all times.

You want people to die for driving a car Romero - Huh?

People driving cars kill and so do people drinking alcohol kills as much or more than smoking but I sure as hell don't want to ban the car or alcohol. What's more I can't see the government ever managing to pass these through parliament (if it came to it).

The thing is it's all down to people's freedoms. People should be allowed to smoke. If they get so bad they need hospital treatment then:

A: They should maybe be turned away.
B: Definitely be turned away if they still smoke when told not to, regardless of the illness. It's a form of slow suicide.

I'll break down Mordib's list:

1.smoking at home - Should definitely NOT be banned.
2.smoking in the office - Should be banned and is in most offices AFAIK
3.smoking outside the main door of the office - Hard to say a smoking room would be better.
4. smoking outside generally (not in doorways) - Should be allowed except in cases where the elderly, sick or young children congregate. I see Romero's point but this gets to the point where it becomes over the top.
5. smoking in pubs/clubs/bars - Should be banned BUT a side area should be made available.

Non smoking restaurants work by and large, create a separate section. That said it's unfair on the staff. So make smokes get their own food/drinks from the bar.

In Ireland where it's now illegal to smoke in public places (i.e - not outside) it has work tremendously. People just accepted it. I must admit it was lovely to walk into a restaurant and especially pub and have zero smoke around you. All the entrances have fag holders where people stand outside to smoke.

I have heard illegal lock ins now exist for people to smoke in a back room.

Having a smoking area in a restaurant is like having a pissing area in a swimming pool.

yeah, in less touristy pubs such bans are pretty much ignored. No one cares because no one is complaining as the locals keep themselves happy. i woiuld still like to see that formalised though (eg a pub could declare 'this is a smoking pub, if you dont like smoke please dont come in', just like places can equally say 'no smoking please' )

this is where I start to get more controversial in my views. I strongly believe that as long as it is made clear that the establishment is a smoking establishment when someone goes for a job then the emphasis should be on the worker as to whether they want to work there. As such I have no sympathy for bar/pub workers who start complaining about smoking in their work place, they knew full well wha they were getting into when they accepted the job.

Tobacco is a drug. Get over it! :D

In Norway smoking is banned in most places. I.e. restaurants, pubs etc. People still can smoke outdoors - unfortunately the gits hardly move away from the doors so anyone wanting to go anywhere is assaulted by the terrible stench - it makes me ill everytime.

Smoking in cars should be banned aswell - as should applying lipstick/makeup. Come on - you are DRIVING a DEADLY vehicle!

As for pubs etc. Think of the people working there? Think of all the 2nd hand smoke they've inhaled over the years! It's lethal, and with the current state of affairs you take whatever job you get.

My worst experience was at a restaurant once, where I was just sitting down to enjoy a meal - when this old bitch sitting 1.5m away from me lit up! AARGH! Nice dinner... NOT.

Strangely enough, it seems that it's mostly women that smoke nowadays... perhaps they feel they need to catch up on all the stuff they didn't get to do over the last 150 years (if I remember correctly - inhalation of nicotine by the female gender was frowned upon?)

Anyways...
So long, and thanks for all the fish!

You could have a smoking area but it would have to be seperate from the non-smoking area so the smoke wouldnt travel, and annoy others.
Maybe less people would smoke if the smoking age was raised 21 or something like that (as in the US?)
Smoking outside is OK IMO, and maybe in a pub etc, but it does annoy me if I'm stuck at a table with smokers on it :(
At my college, you were allowed to smoke outside - mostly it seemed to be the girls that did it for some reason, not sure why :?

alas legal smoking age has pretty much nothing to do with it, most of the people I know who smoke or have smoked started far before the legal age. i've seen no indication in studies and reports that this is any less true for the majority.

a proper smoking area works well, but only if it is set up right. A properly ventalated smoking area will actually contain purer air than a smoke free pub, but as usual people either don't believe this or base their opinions on substandard system which many establishments unfortunately use.

You can't stop smoke from travelling in a confined place... THAT was Brass Monkey's point. lol Like pool piss it floats...

Or maybe pictures of tumoured lungs should be slapped in bold colour on the packets? Just a thought...

Thats just a stupid thing to say and you know it. Millions die from Fags! there is no way you can even compare cars and fags ever, and comments like that really are idiotic to me.
but alcohol, yes I do say ban it! we dont need it at all in our society, it doesnt kill as many people as fags, but it does make society a shit place and ruins lives.

Fags are just on a whole differnet level really and anyone who thinks its ok to smoke is ignorant on a whole level, my mother may well die and I know its her fault and she is just a stupid fool for not stopping, an addiction my arse, just stop, it wont kill you to stop and think of others for once. It does kill to continue.

It IS difficult to stop once you've started.

Tobacco modifies some of the wiring in your brain.
Sometimes your brain says it needs a cigarette, and it's pretty hard to argue with your brain. :D

But it's not impossible. My father stopped smoking on January 1st 2002. He decided he would never buy a cigarette with a price tag in euros.
3 years later, he's still alive and well, and non-smoking.
