Classic :D.

Naturally I couldn't disagree more about Blade Runner, outstanding film. Seven is also excellent but I agree about Interview with a Vampire. I've thought though it was utter tosh.

i realise i'm in the minority about Blade Runner (nice set design though) and i'm not a big sci-fi fan in general but i can't believe even the films fans would think Sean Young was good in this :)

TBH it's never really bothered me either way, the way she acts fits perfectly with her character. Sure it's not a master class but it suits the part fine.

Don't worry Grim, nothing spoilt, many people still argue to this day that Harrison Ford's character isn't a replicant, so when you see it you can make up your own mind.

No the Final Cut! TBH none of the cuts differ wildly but the Original Theatrical Cut is the most different with the awful happy ending and awful voice over.

But Gas is right the Final Cut is the way to see it now. Don't you own the 2 Disc SE DVD Grim? Which only contains the FC.

Don't worry Grim it's not really a spoiler. It's like saying 2001 is about the journey of man, it is but just as many disagree. It's left VERY vague in the film, more implied.

I feel Paul Verhoeven's movies are very overrated. He's a shitty director, who gets attention by shock-value (violence and nudity/sex).
Robocop would have been much better if it would have had a good director on it. Basic Instinct was a shitfest, only worth watching for the naughty bits. Even Sharon Stone's acting is hopelessly overrated.

I also feel Tarentino's flicks are wayyy overrated, with the exception of Jackie Brown, which is actually underrated.

I complete agree, except for your thoughts on Basic Instinct, it's the only decent Verhoeven movie. Of course if someone else had made Robocop it would no way be the same film but I agree it would possibly be better. Take away all the deliberate sleazy action and it's very poorly made indeed.

I agree about JB. RD and PF are about right IMO, both very good but since then yes he's overrated. I like PF and DP but the dude should really be making better films, given that's he capable.

IB looks rubbish. I won't be bothering.

Robocop is great. Made by almost any other director it would've turned into a dull superhero film or a terminator clone. But this traumatized dutchman directed a superbly fun and over the top action satire.

Black Book was a bit dry, though.

Not even for Castellari's cameo?

Robocop is crap, and only memorable because of the extreme violence, and seeing Eric's dad playing a bad-ass villain. It would have been much MUCH better if it would have had a capable director. I feel Robocop IS a comocbook-movie, the way they were made in the 80's (crappy casting/acting, poorly shot, lots of 'Dirty Harry' moments with 2 dimensional stereotype villains, yuppies, cops, crooks, etc...)

It's a shitty movie, and the only thing carrying it is the idea, the story, and the extreme violence.

How come Verhoeven is 'traumatized'!? He's just an opportunistic overrated sleezeball...

He grew up during the second world work. Apparently he saw a quite a few dead bodies on the streets (often brutally butchered and left as warning) when he was a little kid. He has said that a lot of stuff in his movies is inspired by the things he saw as a kid.

Robocop is brilliant!! :D

Re: Blade Runner, it doesn't hurt to see the Final Cut first, you'd not notice the differences as they are so minor. The A/Q quality of the release is stunning however - so unless you get the 5 version Blu-Ray set it won't be bettered I think (if you want to see a clean version of the DC).

A +1 for Gangster films usually suck btw. ;)

Could be. He was a kid back then, but I don't know what the situation on the ground was in Amsterdam, and if it's true about the nazi's leaving dead bodies lying around.

Anyway, doesn't change the fact that he's a shitty overrated director. :D

I'll agree with this bit.
HungFist wrote:Not even for Castellari's cameo?
You should know by now, you're the geek not I ;). I've not got a scooby doo who he is, some "Bruce Campbell fanboy's cult wet dream" I'm guessing.
HungFist wrote:Go watch George Lucas films. The new editions.
I take your point but I don't consider them the same. Lucas messed with the original trilogy, changing loads which didn't need changing but Scott tweaked things to improve them, nothing major was changed. The CGI is a lot better done too. It feels more complete, unlike Star Wars where it feels tacked on.

In some deranged warped manner maybe.

Face/Off is loads better than Hard Target.
Except it isn't.

The only people who would say that it is are those who don't have the balls to admit they enjoyed a Van Damme movie and think Nic Cage is the acceptable face of Hollywood action.
Do you understand the concept of this thread?
Yes - and you still know nothing about martial arts choreography. So what's your point?

Ford has stated many times his dislike for Blade Runner.

Yes. Absolutely correct.

It's all natural. You were the one annoyed Reeves wasn't in Superman Returns when you know full well it was impossible.
Markgway wrote:The only people who would say that it is are those who don't have the balls to admit they enjoyed a Van Damme movie and think Nic Cage is the acceptable face of Hollywood action.
Right okay because if you say Hard Target is better, it must be. I've never enjoyed a JCVD movie, the guy is an awful actor and painful to watch.

Cage was "the acceptable face of Hollywood action" in Face/Off, Con Air and The Rock but obviously not otherwise. You forgot Travolta btw. Face/Offf is a very good Hollywood action film, obviously it's no Predator or Terminator 1+2 but no one said it was.
Markgway wrote:Yes - and you still know nothing about martial arts choreography. So what's your point?
Are you sure? Because the title of the thread is:

"Films you found to be not as good as the hype..."

Not:

"Films you found to be not as good as the hype... except those Mark happens to like".

Christ you can be deliberately annoying at times.

I definitely prefer Hard Target over the absolute shitfest that is Face/Off.
