MS Office / Expression Web / Visual Web Developer 2007 SP1

Post by bradavon »

Download it here, it's 218Mb: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... 1F388F5%20

The link only mentions Office 2007 but the blurb in Vista's Windows Update also says Expression Web 2007 and Visual Web Developer 2007.
EDIT: I can confirm it also includes Expression Web 2007.

If you want just Expression Web SP1, here it is: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... dc681741ad

I cannot find Visual Web Developer SP1.

Don't tell me everyone else is running 4 year old software? I can understand why people are reluctant to upgrade to Vista but not Office.

Okay I can see why some would still use Office 2002/2003 (any older though, come on) but thought others would also have upgraded to Office 2007, no?

Office 2007 forces ClearType on, looks like there's a registry modification but fuck it anyway. 2007 isn't used in any environments I work in, 2003 is.

I didn't know that.

I don't know anyone who uses 2007 either (home or business). I do think it's worth upgrading too, if you're in IT anyway. You can always Save as Office 97-2003 format if you wish.

I've been using it since May (when I upgraded to Vista) and Microsoft are half right when they say it makes finding options easier. There are still sometimes I cannot find an option as it's not on the "default" tabs. I then need to check Help to see where they've moved it too.

In the legacy Office 2003 and prior interface three quarters of the options I never used but I knew where the ones I wanted were.

That said people are obviously put off by the new user interface which dumb as after 10-20 minutes you've familiarised yourself with it, and like Vista it's the future. I've no idea when MS will stop issuing Office 2003 licences but no doubt they will eventually.

I understand under the hood there is lots for businesses to use (such as better SharePoint support) but I suspect they're scarred it will in the short term mean more training. Office 2003 needed no training as it looked the same as 2000 and 2002.

I use Office 2007 all the time at home and at work. Its far better than Office 2003. I had to use Office 2003 the other day on a different PC at work and I couldn't find even the most-used options! The ribbon interface in Office 2007 is a fantastic idea.

Excellent. The built-in support for making PDFs that is coming in Service Pack 2 is long overdue.

I don't have time right now to read the whole article, but does it mention anywhere if you need to have SP1 installed first before installing SP2, like with Vista?

I'll be having the x64 version of Office 2010 as soon as its available.

I agree. It took me no time at all to get used to. People who still moan about the ribbon are being stubborn and living in the past, mostly the same crowd who won't even consider using Vistas.

I hope Office 2010 has tabs but I bet it won't.

I'm most looking forward to proper Office Live functionality in Office 2010. Google Apps is much better than the pants Office Live Workspace but Google Apps doesn't integrate with MS Office and STILL doesn't support Office 2007 formats.

We looked into using Google Apps at work but it doesn't support Excel 2007 and has a 1Mb file size limit on .xls files. We use a crucial spreadsheet at work, which is about 1.5Mbps in 97-2003 format.

To be fair, MS wanted to include it with Office 2007 RTM but Adobe stopped them. I guess this has now been sorted out. The current add-on is indeed handy.

No you won't. Except Vista SP1 as far as I know this hasn't been required since Office 2000 SP1 (then known as SR1).

Fingers crossed Outlook 2010 x64 is more stable and fucking closes is when you exit it. Why MS have never managed to properly fix this is beyond me.

Don't get me wrong Outlook is hands done best PIM/E-Mail client out there but it is bloated and it's IMAP support is worse than Outlook Express/Windows Live Mail (i.e - how it locks the client while refreshing the folder).

What exactly is this, and is this free!? (I thought Microsoft Office cost money!?)
Is this some kind of free alternative or something!?

Yes MS Office costs money, if bought legally. You can find ways to get it dirt cheap. My existing copy I got through a work deal for £17 (cost of postage), through some special legal deal but apart from this I've always used a bootleg.

You can also get the Home and Office Edition cheap but normally it's expensive.

Sure there is Open Office which given it's free is impressive but there really is no competition for MS Office. Especially when it comes to Outlook! No other PIM (Personal Information Manager) client is in the same league. Mozilla's Thunderbird is good but not in the same ball park, even with it's Calendar Add-on. I find Outlook's Calendar as useful as it's E-Mail.

Plus many Mobile Phones are only capable of talking to Outlook. Windows Mobile, Nokia and I think even the iPhone are Outlook only.

Microsoft aren't perfect but Windows and Office are two areas they excel. Even Apple know MS Office is good, they've never bothered to even try and compete with it. MS Office for Mac is the product they've always plugged as the Mac Office Suite (always released a year later).

Does Adobe Photoshop cost significantly more than all other Photo software? It doesn't stop it being the one people want. Why? Because it's simply the best.

I hope so too. Why do you think it won't?

I've never even looked into Office Live so I don't know what its use is. I suppose I won't miss it if I don't need it.

Yeah, Word 2008 for Mac has "save as PDF" buil-tin, so I can't understand why Word 2007 for Windows never had it. Maybe a legal problem?

Excellent. I've got Office 2007 SP1 installed at the moment but I'm going to do a fresh Vista install soon (might even just move to Windows 7 x64) so I'll wait for SP2 to come out. I was actually thinking the other day that I should just wait a month on my fresh install of Vista because SP2 is supposed to be coming out for that too.

It just seems unlikely, don't you think? Outside of the Web Browser it's such an uncommon feature.

You know what Google Apps is? Office 2010 will have the same idea. Office Live Workspace allows you to upload Office Docs and Display but not Edit them online. It's pants compared to Google Apps.

Yep exactly that. I read it got pulled at the last minute and instead the add-on was offered. Which I guess I can uninstall when SP2 comes.

Vista SP2 seems have to gone quite. I cannot find any sort of concrete date.

Windows 7 Beta is ace isn't it. Are you running the Beta or a more recent build? I'm really looking forward to 2010. Finally we should be able to move on from the NT5 era.

p.s - I'm also looking forward to Windows Mobile 7, which hopefully should finally give the iPhone serious competition from MS.
