Poorly received/Critically panned films you like?

Post by saltysam »

Following on from the recent thread about supposed great films that aren't all that i thought we'd start one about reportedly bad films you actually will admit to liking :) ( i'll start with the recent Doomsday, critically panned, i found it a thoroughly entertaining sci fi/actioner hybrid. Nightwatch with Ewan McGregor, i've never seen the original and this remake got panned,i thought it was ok. Starship Troopers is a rewatchable cracker imo :) Tower Of Death may be a Bruce Lee knock off but any film with Roy Horan has got to be good! c'mon guys own up what are your favs!

Super Mario Bros. This film is a lot of fun, I always watch it when I stumble across it on TV.

- Battle Royale 2: - I liked this much more on it's second viewing, it's still no classic like BR though. I've only seen Requiem not Revenge though.

Come on Tartan, bloody release BR on BD. How cool would that be!

I'll second QOS. Watched it for a second time last night and enjoyed the shit out of it. Most of the criticisms levelled at it were absurd.

HUDSON HAWK. Not the blockbuster people were expecting but rather a quirky black comedy. I "got it".

Don't know if these were panned as such... but JUDGMENT NIGHT and THE PRINCIPAL are two of my unsung favourites.

Most of the criticisms levelled at QOA were 100% justified: Terribly bland villains, almost non-existent narrative, poorly shot and edited action sequences, etc, etc.

I did a Google search and yeah, I do remember now. Has Palisades Tartan actually released anything new, be theatrical releases or DVDs?

Tower of Death is brilliant, pretty much on par with the best real Bruce Lee movies.

- Kickboxer
- Bloodsport
- Gladiator (the boxing movie)
- Game of Death (cool soundtrack, nice story, nice paced movie, and obviously nice fights at the end)

I didn't know Arahan was poorly received, but I really enjoyed the movie. The fight in the diner was fantastic.

I think Game of Death is all right in a cheesy way, even if only the final 20 minutes are best :D
It's a Good bad film :D Love the Bond-ish music and opening title sequence.

Didn't know that the following were poorly received:

- Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
- Replacement Killers
- Naked Weapon (Hong-Kong)
- Arahan (Korea)

They are solid films in my opinion.

"Tower of Death" was a killer movie. Who said it was poor?

@Yi:
Didn't "Bloodsport only do bad at the theatre box office? Because later on it has become a major home video success. The same goes for "Kickboxer" I believe.

Not as far as I'm aware :(. Just lots of talk. The original articles said they'd be releasing those Tartan discs that never made it to release but so far nothing.

Seriously, you have the most bizarre taste in movies ever. Game of Death as good as Fist of Fury? Are you serious?

edit: Tower of Death is actually Game of Death 2 right? I've not seen that one but find it hard to believe it's as good as Fist of Fury still.

I think Kickboxer and Bloodsport are pretty much only popular with 'us', as in fans of martial arts flicks or action/B-flicks with van Damme.
Most reviews I see of the movie usually give it about 2 stars out of 5 orso. Sometimes 1 star, occasionally 3 stars ;)

I also really like the Charlie Sheen flick No Man's Land, about an undercover going after a high-profile car-thief ring.

Game of Death 2/Tower of Death has great fights, but no way is it as good as Fist of Fury IMO.

Bloodsport was quite the DTV success back in the day, Kickboxer was also modest success. TBH most of the films mentioned in this thread were not unanimously critically panned, they merely recieved mixed reviews.

I remember watching it at my old local cinema back in the day (before they levelled the place), always had a soft spot for it too!

Roman Polanski's The Ninth Gate. I love this film and can watch it over and over again, but it's got 40% rotten on RT and 6.6 on IMDb. I think it's so underrated!

Bloodsport and Kickboxer did well in US theatres.
