Re: Asian Movies in HD!
I don't think the reviewer has seen any non-USA DVDs of the films he's reviewing.
The R1 is 2.35:1, as is the R4 (also Disney, PAL aside it's the same disc). The Thakral is/was cropped to 1.78:1. I don't know of any other discs (Mainland Europe maybe). I think Disney also own the UK rights but have obviously never bothered to release it.

It may not be blu perfection but compared to Police Story that Drunken Master discs looks very good...
Drunken Master II was filmed in Technovision and should be framed at 2.35:1.

Re: Asian Movies in HD!
That DVDActive review of the technical aspects of the BDs is pretty poor by their usual standards, aside from the really unacceptable error regarding DM2's aspect ratio he also has this to say about Zatoichi and Iron Monkey:
"The Blind Swordsman: Zatoichi is another relatively weak entry in the collection. The transfer is pretty sharp, but the only real advantage over simply upscalling your old DVD copies is finer grain (I assume, having not seen the DVD in years)."
"The Blu-ray transfer’s advantage over the old Miramax DVD is in the lack of edge-enhancement, both of the white line and compression noise varieties."
Compression-noise Edge Enhancements (and that other form of EE he talks about isn't a "white line" at all)? Comparisons to a DVD release he hasn't seen in years? icon_suspect

Re: Asian Movies in HD!
Ordinarily I'd be happy to write up a full DVDTimes review Salty (although I wouldn't exactly call myself a professional) but I've got a whole load of titles to review over the next few days. If however you want to lend it me so I can knock up a rudimentary comparison to the HKL DVD in the reviews/comparisons forums and write a more casual summation of the transfer quality, then feel free.saltysam wrote:The grab looks scarily bad but i'm hoping against hope it's somehow unrepresentative of the actual releaseShingster you are a profesional reviewer are you up for borrowing my copy and doing a review maybe posting it on dvdtimes?

Since my correction, this line has been removed from the review.Shingster wrote:That DVDActive review of the technical aspects of the BDs is pretty poor by their usual standards, aside from the really unacceptable error regarding DM2's aspect ratio

Has anyone seen the remake of Two Sisters? I didn't like the Korean original at all and was curious how the US take compared?

It's shit, generic un-atmospheric pap of the highest kind, but then I think the original is excellent.Markgway wrote:Has anyone seen the remake of Two Sisters? I didn't like the Korean original at all and was curious how the US take compared?

This is such excellent news. I was only thinking last night what a gaping hole was left when Tartan went bust. Now they're back!Clueless_Monkey wrote:Tartan will release Sympathy for. Mr. Vengeance on BD in November![]()

I don't care if people disagree. The fact is they released hundreds of titles no one else did and for me at least in an acceptable manner (for the most part).

Re: Asian Movies in HD!
Shame about the price tags! £17.99 is nasty! (hope I can find it was chaper than that!) still I sold my L.E. Tale of Two Sisters ages ago for £25 so any way I look at it I dont loose cash upgrading to Blu Ray
Nice to see Sympathy for. Mr. Vengeance coming out may get that, as it decimates Oldboy and Lady Vengeance.

Re: Asian Movies in HD!
I appreciate PS never looked that great, it was quite low budget but those shots look awful, not detailed. Really fuzzy.
