The HKL is old, I think comparing the FS BD with the FS DVD would give a better result. Looking at that the colour scheme/filter is totally different on the BD (look at the fan capture).

I think they did the same for the Bruce Lee DVDs. Like you say it's not the comparison we want to see.

For such a beautiful film I'd rather have the HKL. That OUATIC BD looks hideous, except for the sharpness it's a mess. The DNR is a fucking disaster. I'll be sticking with my IVL FS DVD box set, plus as it happens I've kept the HKLs too. I cannot bare to sell them.

We know the IVL FS DVD box set beats the HKLs, so it's safe to say the box set is still the way to go.

I cannot work out, how they can:

1. The Big Boss: Genuinely a decent improvement
2. Fist of Fury: Overall better but not as big an improvement as it should be
3. Way of the Dragon: How does this one fair?
4. Police Story: SD Transfer Upscale - WTF!
5. OUATIC: Extreme DNR - WTF!

Out of that lot. only TBB looks like it's genuinely worth getting. I'd consider FOF if/when it's cheaper though.

Looking at those screenshot comparisons of Ip Man, I actually prefer the look of the UK release, and I'm not sure why... I saw Ip Man at a cinema in Singapore late last year, and it's too far back to remember for sure, but I reckon it looked more like the UK release than the HK release. (could be completely wrong there though).

Here's a screenshot from a divx captured from the HK DVD:

Hey,
How does the Myth UK BD compare to the DVD (I have the big HK Avant Garde set (with bookmarks etc) which is probably OOP by now) in terms of cuts/extras?
The BD would certainly take up less space. How much do you think I'd get for the HK CE?

Well I enjoyed it :D I can upgrade what movies I like and mainly its because of space if I so decide. The problem with that is? :D

Well if you can sell that over the top dvd version, it will help with the upgrade to HD.

I would not expect much cash from that dvd edition mind you, still who knows depends on how good a seller you are :D

I have ttried to get rid of many of my large, silly, over the top dvd sets, most are pretty hard to shift :( and postage costs are a joke nowadays.

My Ip Man blu-ray arrived today (alongside Shaolin Soccer and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon :))...

Definitely notice that the colours are washed out in the movie... and I'm not sure if it's because I'm tired, and I saw the comparison screenshots, but it is actually quite distracting... other than that though picture quality seems to be pretty good. There was a very unusual moment of stuttering near the beginning though, just as the kite flies into the picture, almost like the frame rate went down to < 10fps.. not sure what that was all about.

Regarding K&R Blu-Rays, there was discussion in these links:

http://adg.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=2961
http://adg.invisionzone.com/index.php?showtopic=3087

All BL's = HD, but disappointing colours, also containing odd differences when the DVD sources from the same master. They must be using a shitty studio to convert the D5 HD masters Fortune Star provide (all pinked, etc).
Everything else = SD (or possibly DVD) masters upconverted.

Sure it is, but I presume it's still heavily cut in the UK.

Finally got around to finishing Ip Man this evening - pretty happy with the Blu-ray except for a couple of things, but I'm not sure if it is just a problem with the source material or the Blu-ray itself...

Occasionally there's a weird stuttering of footage, particularly when the camera is panning around a crowd.
Black levels aren't the best - everything kind of appears washed out, though that may be by design
Some of the "darker" (murkier) scenes, can look a bit smeared at times.
The Audio level is a bit uneven (very loud fight scenes, compared to the rest of the movie).

Other than that though, am very happy I have Ip Man on Blu-ray, such a kickass film. The extras are pretty good too...

Unfortunately it will probably be region-locked as their other release is.

I'm looking for a review of the taiwanese release of Chocolate or at least some comments about the PQ.

Thanks.

How come you're interested in that BD? The UK BD is pretty good. As I understand it, anyway.

I wasn't keen on all the artefacting on the UK BD, but I wasn't sure if that was part of the original digital footage.

i think Chocolate is a movie that'll never look particularly good, due to the film stock used imo.

Very late in reading this post but:
eon wrote:Occasionally there's a weird stuttering of footage, particularly when the camera is panning around a crowd.
That's down to 24p stutter, you can see it in many films.
Black levels aren't the best - everything kind of appears washed out, though that may be by design
Definitely by design for the scenes when the Japanese occupy HK, the question is wether the scenes at the start of the film pre-occupation are meant to look really colourful (like they are in the HK release) or not.
Some of the "darker" (murkier) scenes, can look a bit smeared at times.[/quo
te]You may possibly have your brightness levels a touch high? The compression does falter in the blacks in places but a probably calibrated brightness level should hopefully be low enough to gloss over most of it.
The Audio level is a bit uneven (very loud fight scenes, compared to the rest of the movie).
HK cinema sound design, subtle as a housebrick, I didn't think the UK BD was too uneven though.
