Dragon The Bruce Lee story - uncut in UK?

Post by grim_tales »

Is Dragon: The Bruce Lee Story uncut in the UK -? One DVD released/made in 2003 has a "new" 15 on it and by 2003 nanchukus were allowed.
I can't find anything on the BBFC site though.

Looking on the BBFC it's always been 15 but interesting:

1993 (Theatrical) - 24 Seconds of Cuts: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classifie ... enDocument
1994 (Home Video) - 4 Seconds of Cuts: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classifie ... enDocument
2000 - All previous Cuts Waived: http://www.bbfc.co.uk/website/Classifie ... enDocument

The 1993 release was by UIP (jointly owned by Paramount and Universal). The 1994 release by CIC Video (who no longer exist) but interestingly the 2000 release was by Columbia Tristar. Who released the cut DVD.

That would say to me it's uncut but then we know Columbia Tristar released at least one cut DVD. So who knows. I can no see no newer submissions after 2000, so the 2003 DVD must surely be the same as the older DVD. Releasing it with the newer 15 certificate just means it was released with the newer logo. Nothing more.

If I was a betting man, I'd say it's still cut.

The BBFC claim it's uncut but look at that run time: It's only 1 sec longer than the cut version and the BBFC video cuts were 28 secs. Something doesn't add up. From what I've heard in the past the DVD is still censored. The Region 1 is uncut but letterboxed.

I wonder where the 4 seconds comes from? There is also that 24 seconds of cuts one too. It's odd for them to actually put "all cuts waived". It's unlike the BBFC to cock up their website.

The 4 secs of video cuts were in addition to the 24 secs of cinema cuts. The BBFC must've decided to take out another couple of shots for the video. Total cuts equal 28 secs.

Maybe they meant video cuts waived - in 2000 werent they still banning nanchukus in films?

No, the ban ceased to be in June 1999.

The current DVDs look awful. There's a ton of video noise and shaprening artefacts. Be great if a new HD transfer was made!

Crazy that there was never a decent anamorphic version of Dragon on DVD... one of the few movies that I'd like, but still missing from my collection. Here's hoping someone picks up the HD rights for it and gets a good source.

Never really liked the movie. It's the usual cheap Hollywood made for TV biography garbage, full of poor acting, fake facts, and nothing interesting. You're better off watching a good Bruce Lee documentary.

I agree with Yi. It's okay but not the biopic the man deserves.

It's not a good movie, more like something made for TV.

Yeah, it does feel made for tv, even in its scope ratio.

Nice music though.

My main issue, even more then its rewriting of every fact, is that it sucks as a narrative. It just ends. Because they were too damn chicken to show him dying, the film ends with him doing a few moves for the extras.

Also, the whole curse demon thing is in bad taste and makes no dramatic sense, since even though Bruce defeats it in the dream, he dies not long afterwards, and, in the real world, Brandon was about to die as well.

The music is excellent and deserves a better film.

The film often appears on the Sci-fi channel. How appropiate!

While it's obvious this is in no way an accurate account of Bruce's life,i found it entertaining enough.fast moving, excellent music score and a decent performance by Jason Scott Lee.
