Enter the Dragon (BD): 5/5

It's not really a rip off, only parts are similar.

Bland serial killer fare. Why do I punish myself by watching this crap?
It's complicated 3/5
Nancy Meyers is cornering the market for the "mature rom-com" genre after Something's Gotta Give, and now this. Instantly forgettable fluff, but Meryl Streep is having a lot more fun in her later career (she used to be so serious), and Alec Baldwin has made a good transition from tradational leading man to his more lighter, comedy centric stuff of recent times. I enjoyed it but wouldn't watch it again.
Elf 3/5
Just slightly better than Fred Claus.

I guess. Doesn't it just expand on the whole "mysterious island base" thing and add a martial arts tournament?bradavon wrote:It's not really a rip off, only parts are similar.

Harry Potter & The Goblet Of Fire 2/5
The least of the series for me so far, found it pretty underwhelming tbh.Rickman underused again though to it's credit there are some good setpieces like the underwater sequence.
Kickass 3/5
Comic book romp is enjoyable,if overpraised and a little overlong.. Pretty violent throughout, the 11 year old swearing didn't bother me but having watched it i don't think it was needed,i assume it was to show that HitGirl was way older in the head than 11 years of age.Well worth seeing and after being in shock as to the sheer poorness of the Iron Man sequel it's nice to see a decent superhero flick.
Iron Man 2 1.5/5 I'm in shock-this was a huge disappointment, boring and bland.Downey makes it watchable but the film as a whole sucks.

Universal Soldier - Regeneration
*.5/4
Worst of the trilogy.
The Russian dude had all the charisma of a walnut. Why he was top billed is anyone's guess?
Van Damme looked tired and bored; seems he only did this to fulfill a contractual obligation.
The whole film looked cheap with its one-set - a disused nuclear power plant - host to endless scenes of bulky stuntmen crashing into each other.
Not sure what format this was shot in but it looked ugly throughout.
I'd mention the script - but since there doesn't appear to have been one...
Only time the film threatened to come to life was the few moments Dolph was on screen. His battle with Van Damme was about the only thing that impressed me.
The rest was a waste of time and my rental fee.

Robin Hood: 4/5
Went with my dad to see it this evening, I didn't think I'd enjoy it because I'm not into that kind of thing but it was actually quite good. Apart from some fast editing in fight scenes, it was very well made, and there were humorous moments to keep it from straying too far from the typical Robin Hood spirit.

Yes - although Part 2 wasn't exactly hot. Frankly I didn't care a good deal for the original either. It's a premise whose promise has yet to be fulfilled.saltysam wrote:You honestly think it was worse than part 2
I haven't read any professional reviews. That's just my opinion. Feel free to disagree with it. Just read rumour that there's going to be a Part 4 in 3-D! Same cast/crew as Part 3. I don't hold out any hope.movies are about opinions but yours is the first bad review i've read of this one, they've been nearly all fairly positive.i thought it was ok myself.

District 9 (USA, NZ / 2009) – 4.5/5
First time director Neill Blomkamp’s hugely impressive sci-fi film succeeds in a rare thing: being poignant and entertaining at the same time. At times, almost like an apartheid documentary with aliens taking the place of a discriminated minority, Blomkamp also doesn’t forget the popcorn values: the film is loaded with genuine R-rated weapons pornography that also, on its behalf, benefits from the director’s pseudo-realistic approach. Despite the valuable message the director thankfully doesn’t preach but only uses it as a background for the film. Terrific and well used CGI, original setting and concept (not space invaders attacking The White House, but weak outsiders living in Johannesburg slums), and semi-parodic touch raise the film in the master class, even if the final 20 minutes turn out a bit less stellar than the film that precedes.

Cool. I'm going tomorrow evening. I hear it's quite different from the Robin Hood films of old. Scott rarely lets me down.gasteropod wrote:Robin Hood: 4/5

I don't have a problem with it being different. I'll judge it on its own terms.
All the films are based on myth anyways so it's fair enough to offer new interpretations.

I've been reading reviews today and they say there's nothing to enjoy and stuff, which I don't understand as myself and the rest of the cinema were laughing at various points (intentional humour).

Howling 2.5/5
80'S werewolf movie has sadly dated somewhat, some of the effects are looking a little shoddy.Compared to the sequels though this is a classic.
An American Werewolf In London 4/5
This one has stood the test of time better than The Howling i feel, with a great cast and soundtrack.Again by today's standards the werewolf effects are not as great looking as they were but for the time still pretty good.
The Wild Geese 3.5/5
A Nostalgic favourite of mine since i saw it on release back in 1978 this isn't a great movie (it's pretty far-fetched) but the camaderie between the leads is great (Burton, Moore,Harris & Kruger) and the 2hr plus running time flies by.

Iron Man 2 - 4/5
Comparable to the original. The heavier plot was handled very well without becoming manipulative and melodramatic. The addition of characters like War Machine, Black Widow, Nick Fury, Whiplash and Justin Hammer--superbly done. My worst fear was that with so many new characters, we'd get and ending like Spider-Man 3 where all the good guys would team up against all the bad guys and start fighting eachother in a spectacular final showdown. Disaster averted. Thankfully. B+

I saw this earlier. Fantastic and visceral. Don't expect the Robin Hood you know and love, it's a completely different story. Forget everything you know about Robin Hood.gasteropod wrote:Robin Hood: 4/5

No one does period epics like Ridley Scott!

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
Really? I thought for the most part, it worked very well. It was a little odd at first but I quickly got used to it. I did think they shoe-horned Robin Hood suddenly becoming an outlaw, too quickly. That was messily done but overall I didn't mind.gasteropod wrote:Yeah exactly, everyone's whinging about it being different to previous incarnations, there's no pleasing some people is there.
I was surprised to see The Sheriff of Nottingham having such a small part. He's normally, one of the main villains. Crowe's accent was a bit dodgy. It went from OTT English to his normal accent, the latter worked much better. Obviously Robin Hood is fantasy but including historical aspects works better. It's much more likely it was the French who invaded and the Forest Charter (oddly not given by name) is real, according to the Mark Kermode interview with Crowe anyway.
Another great Scott period epic.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
Nah it was as average as films ever get, god awful looking film for a start. Some of the worst cinematography I have seen in ages, flat, ugly, bland, badly lit (a total joke!), no colour and just poorly done all round. Damn ugly as sin. The fights were lacking in every way and at no point were they "visceral", try a bore with no gore. The action scenes felt like they had a few hundred actors at most and really it was all seen it all before, and done better by everyone else. $200 million for gods sake!
someone tossed the cash in the bin. Not a "Bad" film for me, but damn I expected a great one and got just sooo average, the tone for one was soo wrong. Many I was in the cinema with were angry at how they hated it, a lot. At least I did not hate it.
Totally flawed Kingdom of Heaven seems like a great film compared to Robin Hood. Never mind compared to Gladiator or Braveheart masterclass.
