Yeah - I know what you mean, for a film where the music should be so important, its lazy and anachronistic. Jumpin' Jack Flash was released in 1968, for example. I think Georgy Girl was released in the UK as a single by 1966 (featured in the movie) but didnt come out in the US til 1967.

Getting it wrong by 1 or 2 years, isn't that bad, is it?

It is, as Grim already pointed out, for a film which is about music on the radio.
There were loads of great songs made in 1966 (or before) that could've been used for the soundtrack.
I believe BOAT also used A Whiter Shade of Pale and Elenore which came out 67/68.

Iron Man 2: 2.5/5. Big let down from the previous movie. I'm surprised they didn't give Rourke a catchy villain name, as his character was a mashup of Whiplash & Crimson Dynamo. I fell asleep several times during this movie @ the theater. They could have easily trimmed the fat on this movie by 30-45mins. Im curious to see if The Avengers will be a good series or become standard marvel films crap.

DAYS OF THUNDER
I enjoyed this more than I thought I would. Basically it's Top Gun with cars, but slick, fast, and entertaining enough to score a hit.
WANTED DEAD OR ALIVE
Repellent B-movie actioner only worth watching if you're a die-hard Rutger Hauer fan. Loved the grenade-in-mouth finale though.

Shutter Island (USA, 2010) – 3.5/5
While nowhere near Scorsese’s masterpieces from the past decades, Shutter Island is still an undeniable display of the director’s cinematic talent. Although generally labeled as thriller, this 1950’s set film noir influenced story of a detective who travels to a mental institute island would be far better classified as horror. The way how Scorsese creates extreme dark atmosphere purely with stunning use of music and cinematography, scene after scene, often with no break, and without relying on sound effects or gore shocks, is more skillful – and scary – horror cinema than almost anything else in the genre. It is the screenplay and especially the ending (open to interpretations, but still leaving the storyline on shallow grounds) that do not fully satisfy – plus the 140 min running time that feels a bit stretched for the content the film has to offer.
And damn that rotten luck of mine. Took a nice girl to see this film as I knew she likes DiCaprio. Just before the film she tells me she doesn’t like horror movies as they give her nightmares. After the film she tells me Shutter Island was the scariest movie she has ever seen.
I didn’t even know this was a horror film. It wasn’t the movie that was my primary interest.
Duuuuh.

Do you even need to ask?gasteropod wrote:Was she Japanese
It's funny, I always thought that the Japanese are fearless people... living in the safest country in the world, they have little to be afraid of. Plus they have a long history of making the most violent movies in the world, and passing stuff with dubiously low ratings (Shutter Island and District 9 were both pg-12).
But yeah, half of the people I meet here have been scared to death by a mainstream horror movie.

Re: What general film/series have you just seen.. marks out
When I was in Japan in 2001, we visited an amusementpark somewhere near Tokyo (between Tokyo and Mt. Fuji I think), and they had this 'Haunted Hospital' where you would get a flashlight and walk around in a hospital full with 'zombie' doctors and patients and bad lighting etc.
Anyway, I wasn't scared at all, and actually was just checking out where the staff would be hiding and coming out from, and showing it to the other people in there.
However, pretty much all the japanese people there, plus my friends from Holland, were genuinely spooked and scared and at the brink of tears (or beyond) while they were in there(!)
It's just strange, knowing it's fake and not real, and still be scared. Most horrormovies I find boring and quite uninteresting (doesn't help that most 'victims' are either irritating people or plain stupid...)

Yeah I saw that (or something like it) on Jonathan Ross's 'Japanorama', the Japanese girls were running for their lives hah.

DORIAN GRAY: 2/5
Not a very good film TBH, it looks good in an MTV kind of way but not much else. During the part where Dorian is chased by an assassin (his girlfriends brother?) why does he look scared/run away? He can't get older or be hurt

REPLICANT
I didn't much care for this first time I saw it (back in 2002) but after watching it again last night I enjoyed it a whole lot more.

PRINCE OF PERSIA: 3/5
Entertaining enough
Jake Gyllenhaal was OK, I know the film is based on a video game (I'm sure I have it somewhere) but it can't hide it's origins as some parts are lifted straight from the game and play out like one (Eg room of collapsing sand). Gemma Arterton is annoying and not sympathetic as a Persian Princess.
My enjoyment was marred by two people in our group making lots of noise, they even got in big trouble with the audience.

I remember playing the PC game when I was a kid. Was noted for being unusually gory at the time. Obviously that's not translated to the film.

Yeah, it's not very gory, you're right. The story of the film is from the more recent game PoP: The Sands of Time BTW, thats the one I have
I never got round to finishing it

I just bought the HD-remake of the original PoP game for 400 points on XBLA btw.
Not really interested in the movie. Gemma was awful in Quantum of Solace, and the movie just doesn't seem very appealing to me.

TOY STORY 2: 5/5
Fantastic film, a sequel that is just as good - if not better, than the original. Hilarious, there are even fun "outtakes" over the final credits.
But I blubbed like a baby during the "When She Loved Me" sequence
Ever so moving and sad and it tears me up
It isnt just about a toy, it explains what it's like to be a parent, or to love and lose a friend

Game of Death 2: 4/5
It's a bit of a cheesy film, and good fun spotting where the shots of the real Bruce are spliced from, but it's a lot more fun than the first GOD and the fights are great!
Kim Tae Jung looks a bit like Jackie, maybe because of his hair.

Maybe Kim should've become a Jackie clone?

Just realised I posted this rating in the general thread
His hair looked a lot like Jackie's hair in SITES, Dragon Lord etc.
In Game of Death 1 I feel theres some disturbing foreshadowing to Brandon Lee's death and the faked funeral scene (showing Bruce's corpse) is in very bad taste
