Well, not really. Everybody thought he was dead. In reality he was in some kind of limbus, somewhere in time, and until his return Dick Grayson (Robin) was Batman. I never believed he was dead since in "Batman: Whatever Happened to the Caped Crusader?" Bruce sees his friends and enemies at his own funeral.

The whole Batman = dead storyline just seemed like the latest in a long line of ridiculous shock-storylines which have plagued comics for many years now. Lately it's been Batman and Cap America (oh wait surprise they're not really dead... of really? yeah really.... wow... who would have thought oh boy what a shock twist...(!))
TBH, I have never ever cared for such storylines, and I doubt I ever will. It's just such complete bullshit. But TBH, the whole comicbook-industry right now is just a bunch of bullocks anyway. You've got a dozen Spider-Man titles set in multiple universes, hardly any of them interesting, you've got a Superman that's being re-invented every 2 years orso now, and none of those new re-inventions is anywhere close as good as John Byrne's Man of Steel, and it's all just a very commercial mess.
I wish there was just 1 or maybe 2 great series for every big character. Good writer on it. Good artist on it. And instead of going for the cheap shock-thrills or the endless universe-spanning cross-overs, I'd rather just see these writers create short stand-alone stories spanning 1 or a couple of issues, before the next story comes along.
My favourite Batman stuff is just the stories that completely stand on their own. Ofcourse there can be a minor deeper background story going on with the characters, but I just want to see Batman get busy doing what he does best, which is cleaning the streets of Gotham City, sometimes alone, sometimes with 1 or more of his allies. That's all. And Batman 'dying'.... come on... is there anyone in the universe who even thought for a second that he might really be 'dead'....!?
With cap America I had very VERY slight doubts, mostly because Steve Rogers has been a bit of a lame character all these years, so it could have made sense to kill him off and replace him with Bucky... but with Batman, pretty much the best superhero that's out there character-wise, there would just be absolutely no way.
