He's being pretty damn funny (if you watch the video), and seemingly trying to make a point relating to his new film, but I guess he should understand people are just too stupid to understand points, humor, and especially self-irony. Still, the Cannes philosophy that "anyone who dares not to condem Hitler's every cell to hell must be banished" is far more worrying than anything von Trier said... What a bunch of idiots...
He should be banned for wanting to put the ugly stick Kirsten Dunst in a hardcore sex movie...
...but yeah, Cannes is overreacting, as often happens when it's about jews and Hitler and such.
Also a bit hypocritical. Wasn't Mongol, a movie that turns Genghis Khan into a sympathic nice guy, while he was responsible for many millions of deaths, one of their favorite movies a few years ago?
I was there, the big BNB blackout of november, 2008. We lost many that day...
Considering Cannes styles itself as a highly cultured festival for the "intelligentsia" of the film industry, you'd think they'd have the brains to realise by now that you should never take Lars Von Trier seriously, he's a piss-taker of the highest order!
Cannes is mainly a marketplace for the industry. One would assume that von Trier is well known to the point where he can make business deals without having to go there. I don't imagine that any negative impact to his career will likely be minimal.
