Koji Wakamatsu R.I.P

This is terrible news. The legendary Koji Wakamatsu, whose political and social films re-defined what filmmakers could achive in the pink genre in the 1960's, whose United Red Army is one of the best Japanese movies of the 2000's, and who was just awared as the Asian Filmmaker of the Year at Busan International Film Festival a few weeks ago, has died in hospital. The 76 year old director, who released 3 movies this year, was hit by a taxi in Shinjuku, Tokyo, last week, and died from the injuries this week.

Like Violated Angels or Serial Rape, by the late, great Koji Wakamatsu. Or the All Night Long series by Katsuya Matsumura. Films with no hope, no redemption and no great straining towards underlying meaning.
