Rush Hour 3 is a go!
Rush Hour 3 on the Fast Track
Source: Variety
November 21, 2005
Variety reports that New Line Cinema has finally gotten Rush Hour 3 on the fast track. The studio has at long last signed Chris Tucker, Jackie Chan, director Brett Ratner and screenwriter Jeff Nathanson to return for the sequel.
Tucker will earn $20 million against 20% of gross, and his deal comes with a second-picture commitment for the same salary on a film to be determined later. The actor has given up script approval as long as the final draft matches what Nathanson pitched, adds the trade.
Chan will get around $15 million against 15% of gross, but he will also own the film's distribution rights in China and Hong Kong.
Ratner will get an increase in the upfront part of the $5 million-against-5% gross deal he had on Rush Hour 2.
Nathanson, who scripted the last film, will be paid seven figures to write the third installment.
New Line has the option to greenlight the film by May, based on script approval and a budget the studio hopes won't exceed $120 million. That greenlight would trigger pay-or-play deals for the helmer and the two stars.
The film will begin shooting next summer in the U.S. and Paris and anchor the studio's summer 2007 schedule.
Arthur Sarkissian will produce with Roger Birnbaum, Jon Glickman and Jay Stern, the latter of whom is Ratner's Rat Entertainment partner.
The film had been expected to begin production this fall for release next summer. While the movie was on hold, Nathanson rewrote the Indiana Jones 4 script for George Lucas and Steven Spielberg, and Ratner took on directing duties for X-Men 3.
Released in 2001, Rush Hour 2 was an international hit that grossed $226 million domestically and $329 million worldwide. Tucker hasn't made a movie since.

Uhm... ok, put aside the fact that I had no problems with the "Rush Hour" movies (and yes, I know I just made myself unpoular here), but...
20 Million for Tucker
+ 15 Million for Chan
+ 5 Million for Ratner
-----------------------------
= 40 Million Dollars
Errr... 40 Million Dollars of the budget is going to be spent on just the actors and the director? LOL, deduct 4 Millions, give them to me. These guys would still be making loooots of money, and I could finally make that movie of mine (I calculated it with a producer of mine). I can guarantee that its storyline is more decent than any of the "Rush Hour" movies and I can also guarantee that it is more decent than the plot of "Rush Hour 3" will be.
Argh... 40 Millions. What a waste of money.

120 million dollars for a simple buddy-cop movie with a couple of stunts in it: budget seems outrageously high, as well as the paychecks that those involved will be getting. Hollywood has really lost it's marbles. :drunken:

Bah, the Rush Hour movies have so far been entertaining for me. They make me laugh, especially when I'm really down, so for me they're good therapy.
Not every film has to be a world-class masterpiece. Afterall, films are primarily made for entertainment. The sucess of the Rush Hour films shows that many people enjoy them - what's so wrong about that?
I for one welcome Rush Hour 3, and will definitely go see it at the cinema when it comes out...

Surely Chris Tucker isn't getting more than Jackie Chan? Even the studios must know Jackie Chan is by far the main draw to this for fans.
Chris Tucker is replaceable, Jackie Chan is not!
As for the film they're both lots of American Chan fun. I like both about the same. I for one am also looking forward to this.
Ratner is a competent director but he has no ideas or style of his own. He's very much painting by numbers.

Jeez I didn't realise the American market was that much bigger.Released in 2001, Rush Hour 2 was an international hit that grossed $226 million domestically and $329 million worldwide.
That depends on what country you're talking about and how you define entertainment.Afterall, films are primarily made for entertainment.
This really, really worries me.Ratner took on directing duties for X-Men 3

As Jackie said in a recent french interview:
"When I make film in america = for american audience"
"When I make film in Hong-Kong = for myself"
"If I say to you : I'm making Drunken Master 3, you all say "YES !" "
"But when I go to america, they ask me: Jackie, when's Rush Hour 3 coming ?"
"They really like this kind of movie"
"This is why I make some HK movie, then some american movie"
"Now: The Myth, Shinjuku Story, The secret project with Sammo Hung, then go back to make Rush Hour 3, Shanghai Dawn, Shanghai Evening, Shanghai Morning, etc..."
"I really like making HK movies, but there is only one Jackie Chan".
"I can't be everywhere at once."

I saw Shanghai Knights on telly bout a month ago and it was fucking terrible. I recall actually enjoying the Rush Hour films, but it's been awhile since I've seen 'em and my tastes have drastically improved/evolved since then.

The X-men 3 script is fucking terrible. Singer's screenwriters suck too, but they're far better than whoever penned the current chosen script.bradavon wrote:This really, really worries me.Ratner took on directing duties for X-Men 3

It's just Jackie choosing for the money and fame, instead of for the quality and the fans. In those old interviews, he always mentioned how he wanted to be in the historybooks for what he did etc. He will be ofcourse, cause he was great ... but he will also be remembered for selling out/choosing the wrong projects. Instead of Rush Hour 3, he should just make a kick-ass Drunken Master 3, and this time KEEP THE DISTRIBUTIONRIGHTS to himself, instead of selling out to Harvey.
That way, he will ensure his movie won't be cut to pieces, can get a decent/good dvd release, and also make Jackie a rich boy ...

That makes sense. He's said many times that his movies have "two kinds of audience"Tom2681 wrote:As Jackie said in a recent french interview:

I enjoyed both Rush Hours. The actionscenes were pretty mediocre and certainly not worthy of Jackie, but I was entertained while watching them. Nothing really great or outstanding about them, but pretty cool for an old-skool buddy-cop kinda flick.
I felt Shanghai Noon was pretty boring. Gorgeous indian chick in it, though...
Shanghai Knights was much more entertaining. It's a fucking shame the fightscenes were cut shorter...
Anyway, Jackie should just stop making movies for his american 'fans' and just make a fucking brilliant old-skool style martial arts flick, bringing in the REAL talent (young and old) and just work on that for a year or 18 months orso.
Fuck it if it doesnt do well in it's first week in the states. It's not about boxoffice, but about the quality of the movies you have made. Does Jackie really want to be remembered as the guy from Tuxedo 2 or Rush Hour 5, or does he want to be remembed for his best work?
Ah well... ofcourse I'm just speaking from movie-fan perspective. He's is seeing it from his perspective, which is getting paid 15 million bucks to do a pretty easy job compared to the work he would have to do if he'd be making another HK production (In Rush Hour 3, he's just an action-actor, while in his own productions he would have to do WAYYYYyyy much work, while getting paid less...)
...so he should do what's best for him personally, even if that seems to be choosing to make mediocre movies instead of making movie-history.

I'm getting so fed up with asian filmmakers STILL selling their movies to harvey, while they know he'll just fuck them up (IF he even releases the movies...)

He's been good to his word so far regarding NEW POLICE STORY - but that wasn't a particularly good movie so I'm not sure how well it would sell anyways? And now Harvey has Bey helping him. Now that's what I call selling out!thelostdragon wrote:Jackie won't sell to Harvey anymore. Each time he is asked whether he is going to sell his new films to the US he says, "No. You know why."
