Thinking about getting a new player now. I'm sure Panasonic or Sony would do the job, interested most in MR for DVD/BD, good PQ/AQ and 3d capability :)
My current player wouldnt even read a laser cleaning disc properly  The HKR BDs apparently were fine on someone elses player.

Thought this one looked pretty good:

Cant decide between that one and the model below (260). 4K upscaling sounds pointless when I dont have a 4K set yet, imo.

MRM usually state if a model is 3D Capable.maybe they've just missed it off the description.

Do you only want to play discs with this new player Grim? Not interested in the quality of mkv/avi playback?

Ah... now I looked that up ( ) I think that might be important too (sometimes I want to put those kinds of files on DVD/BD) but primarily I want to play normal discs in 2D/3D :)
According to some reviews I've had this player has very good playback for digital files, doesnt really go into detail though:
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio- ... 9/review/2
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio- ... 061/review

The MRM site I linked too only seems to have a smaller selection of players though.

the Panasonic i bought from MRM about a year ago plays (or has) played anything i throw at it.I imagine the one Grim is looking at is a newer model again and should be similar in its ability to play anything.

What model do you have? I was looking at the 360 (or possibly even 460) model :)

I only ask because I'm thinking of getting a new Blu-ray player myself as my Region-Free Oppo 103D is a pain in the arse when it comes to playing media files (mkv, avi, etc). It plays actual physical media (disks) flawlessly though.

I'm not sure whether it has a fault tbh when it comes to playing media files, becuase when I play a 1080p mkv in it I get shimmer (aliasing) in the image, which obviously shouldn't be there and isn't there with DVD/BD discs. If there is a fault with media playback I'll obviously have to offload the Oppo at a lower price than would ordinary be asked for the unit (which I think is still over £600 to buy brand new) to someone who is only interested in the DVD/BD playback performance (which is obviously high end).

It's a £500 high end player that costs about £75 to get modded to Region Free for BD & DVD (uses a very simple hardware mod like with Sony players rather than the firmware disc that makes panasonic players region free), so the going price on most sites for the Oppo BDP103 wth multiregion playback is about £575.

If I can confirm that the player is faulty for MKV playback (I've never really pushed for a solution to the aliading) then I'd probably offload it for £200 or less tbh. I do like my Oppo but it's always been a pain in the arse to playback TV episode mkv files (for the latest US shows) because of the shimmer thing (which most people probably wouldn'r notice tbh) and the fact the player is very finnicky about rewinding and fast-wforwarding in mkv files (often it just skips to the end or start of the file rather than fast-forward or rewind).

Excuse my stupidity... but how do you playback MKV/AVI files without a disc?

Is it by saving them to a USB stick and plugging it into the player?

Just curious...

Yup, two USB ports on the front that you can stick a USB thumb stick or portable hard drive into. Same with the Panasonic players.

OK, thanks. The only time I've done that was when I upgraded the multi-region firmware. Not sure file playback is something that I'd use in future. I don't download HD content.

Useful for those US TV shows that aren't broadcast over here (or broadcast badly or way too late), plus with the cost of terabyte & multiple terabyte portable hard drives falling all the time you can get an application like Makemkv and extract DVDs/BDs to lossless mkv files and store the films on hard drives to save considerable space. Bit of a godsend if you've got a film collection that goes past a thousand titles like me! :D
