That Aussie film is an adaptation of a novel (but, yes, the premise is strikingly similar).

Freeway (1996-USA-France) **
Jailbait Reese Witherspoon gives a striking performance as an angry, foul-mouthed reincarnation of Little Red Riding Hood, with Kiefer Sutherland's paedophile-serial killer the Big Bad Wolf in this twisted, jet-black comedy - the characterisations are so inconsistent that it's entirely possible they're part of the writer-director's elaborate, bad taste joke. Sick material is inherently and forcefully repellent; and just what are we to make of its peculiar morality?

Big Game 2/5 Samuel L Jackson is the usa president when air force one is brought down over the Finnish mountains. He survives after being launched in the rescue pod,his only help a young finnish kid out on his first hunting trip.far fetched nonsense but passable, very short as well, barely 80 minutes in when the credits roll.

Last Rites (1988-USA) **
Horny priest Tom Berenger (the son of a Mafia boss) falls for spicy Mexican "dancer" Daphne Zuniga - witness to a mob hit carried out by the priest's own sister(!). Credibility isn't this film's strong suit, but it kills time painlessly enough.

The Naked Cage (1985-USA) **
Cannon's stab at the WIP genre is total trash - but at least has some fun with it.
The BBFC cut 3:29 so you know it's hard 'R' material.

Penthouse North (2012-USA) **
Michelle Monaghan is a blind former photojournalist tormented by Michael Keaton and psycho chum whilst searching her titular luxury apartment for smuggled diamonds. Barely adequate redux of Wait Until Dark, hampered by predictability. The CG backdrop passing itself off as New York is a tip off all is not well.
Mine Games (2011-USA) **½
Group of friends stumble into an abandoned mine, with fatal consequences. Low budget HDV horror impresses by concentrating on story and character rather than gore. Clever and original, but also tough to follow, with too many questions raised but left unanswered (we literally spend much of the film in the dark). Good acting from sexy Briana Evigan and an unknown (to me) cast.

I don't know the exact nature of the cuts, but it's easy to guess the sort of material the BBFC would have cut back in 1987. Sexual violence being prime contender. Wouldn't surprise me if there were additional cuts for violence and drug use.HungFist wrote:For mistreatment of women?Markgway wrote:The Naked Cage (1985-USA) **

Hear No Evil (1993-USA) **½
Not bad thriller in which deaf Marlee Matlin is stalked by bad guys in pursuit of a priceless coin.
The File of the Golden Goose (1969-UK) **½
Pretty good thriller in which US treasury agent Yul Brynner (very good) goes undercover into a UK-based counterfeit ring. Silly title.

Dead Eyes Of London 1/5 creaky, melodramatic Edgar Wallace programmer, german in origin i believe.
Hard Times 3.5/5 Walter Hill's directorial debut sees one of Charles Bronson's finest performances as quiet bare knuckle fighter Chaney, who arrives in depression-era New Orleans to make a quick buck.He teams up with hustler James Coburn playing his usual laconic role.excellent, under appreciated film.
The Redeemer 1/5 Always remember as a teenager seeing the uk double bill poster, this was paired with Kingdom Of The Spiders. Then i saw the VHS tape in my local video store. Finally nearly 35 years later after reading how Code Red's BD has sold out i decided i needed to see it. Bad move, cheap boring slasher/satanic hybrid plays like two different movies.the main part being 6 people lured to their old deserted school on the pretext of a high school reunion.it gets the one star for the creepy score.
Neon Maniacs 1.5/5 batshit crazy horror movie doesn't make a lick of sense, 12 monsters live under San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge, only coming out at night to kill teenagers.no explanation of the why and where these creatures came from is given, they are just there
huge leaps in logic the lead girl, who played Roxy in Basic Instinct, sees her six friends slaughtered in the park-her reaction? after giving the cops an interview she heads home, puts on her bikini and decides to lounge round in her pool.oh,she also goes to school the next morning
this actually has decent production values but you really have to be in the right frame of mind to watch.Water pistols

Best Seller (1987-US) ***
Assassin James Woods persuades cop-turned-author Brian Dennehy to write an expose book about his life. Two terrific actors lend weight to Larry Cohen's enjoyably pulpy script; John Flynn directs.

Cyborg 1.5/5 Dated Van Damme sci-fi actioner is hampered by it's wooden acting and lack of a sense of humour.some ok action scenes but not his finest hour.Directed by hack Albert Pyun so not too surprising.

Kung Fury (Sweden, 2015) [YouTube] - 3/5
I don't usually support this kind of apologetic comedy tributes (too afraid to do the real thing) but this was pretty catchy and had me laughing especially during the early scenes. It works surprisingly well visually, and I dug the hero. The problem is mainly that it crams three movies worth of content into 30 minutes; just focusing on 80s cop stuff would've been nicer. Oh, and I don't know if this works for Americans and other non-Europeans, but the hilarious moustache scene proved quite a brain twister. I missed half of subtitles when I was trying to figure out what fucking language are they speaking? Swedish? Norwegian? German? Danish? Nope. Swedish-English-German-Gibberish.

Maximum Risk 3/5 Really solid Van Damme actioner, helped massively by having a talent behind the camera in Ringo Lam.
An Eye For An Eye 3/5 One of my favourite Norris outings, logic goes out the window early doors with characters making dumb decisions but it's well directed and has some solid action. This Kino Blu-Ray contains the nude shower Scene with Norris & Maggie Cooper i've only ever seen on the old uk pre-cert vhs.i listened to the newly recorded Audio commentary from the director Steve Carver around this sequence,it's dead air which leads me to believe Carver and the moderator watched the cut version when recording it. anyway to sum up what's not to love about a film that has a Norris/Mako team up,Christopher Lee chewing the scenery as a baddie,Shaft as the badass police boss and Chuck kicking ass at the climax in his black leather gloves and Val Doonican jumper

Mulholland Dr. (2001-France-USA) **
How do you rate and review a film you didn't understand? I had to look up the IMDB for explanations, which makes me feel dumber than I like to after a movie experience. I'm not a fan of Lynchian weirdness, but confess to being fairly absorbed by the noirish mystery and performances of two very attractive leads... but in the end all the flashbacks-it's all a dream-metaphor laden-repressed guilt-identity-shift, etc., business lost me completely. Even though I now 'get it' I still don't care. I know the film received some very positive notices and I'm sure someone will come along any second to tell me how wrong I am...

More of the same with a greater emphasis on humour.
Cheesy and daft, but good, clean fun for B-movie fans.

Fair, if hokey Hammer-produced adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle's mystery staple; well-cast with Peter Cushing and Andre Morell an effective Holmes/Watson combo.

Extremely well-made sequel to 1984 classic; spectacular action and special effects act in conjunction with - not in place of - compelling story.

Scarecrows 2/5 ok low budget late 80's horror/crime hybrid.a group of ex military rob a payroll and hijack a father/daughter to pilot their plane getaway.one betrays them and parachutes out the plane with all the money,he lands in a field full of scarecrows pursued by his cohorts. hampered by some weak acting but quite creepy, atmospheric at times.

Chained Heat (1983-Germany-USA) *
Baby-faced Linda Blair is sentenced to 18 months for a hit and run in the worst female prison in America - would you trust an institution where John Vernon is the warden? Ludicrous and ludicrously inept WIP picture ticks all the exploitation boxes, but isn't controversial enough to drag itself out of the straight-to-video gutter.

Entertaining comic-book spy extravaganza, damaged somewhat by frenetic, overly manipulated action sequences and OTT CG bloodshed. No classic, but it'll do until the next Bond comes along.

Barbarella 1.5/5 colourful but rather dated sci-fi romp starring an incredibly sexy Jane Fonda in the title role.
The Music Machine 1/5 England's supposed answer to the Saturday Night Fever craze is pretty dire stuff.you know it's desperation time when Esther Rantzen appears as herself at one point.
Don't Open Till Christmas 1/5 dreadful british slasher from the mid eighties.
