Beatles albums - advice for a (relative) newbie

Post by grim_tales »

Hey,

I was thinking of checking out some of their "proper" albums (You know, Revolver, Sargeant Pepper etc) - I have the No 1's album "1" released a few years ago. and the Director's Cut (as it were) of Let It Be (Let It Be.. Naked). :)

Which one do you think is best to start with? Its been said all the no 1's aren't even their best work. If not, I'm in for a treat :D

Crikey sorry Grim. I only have "Number 1's" too.

I hear "Sargeant Pepper" is fantastic. Is there a decent Greatest Hits out there?

I have The Red Album and The Blue Album on CD which covers a lot of their most famous songs from the beginning to the end of the band. Of course with a band like The Beatles you'd probably need to get all the albums individually to possess every worthy track (and a bunch that aren't). It really depends on how much you like them? I would start with their first album and go from there.

Very good question. I'm not sure that's a good place to start tbh.

Please Please Me was their first album.

But get all the studio albums !!

no seriously they are all great, theres a reason why they are so popular, they produced some really fantastic pop rock songs. The first few may sound quite similar when they were in their bowl cut days, but when they started to grow their hair they started to rock too.

I would get th Red and Blue to start you off but if you want the studio albums then get Abbey Road or the White Album. And then make you way backwards or forwards depending on what kind of sound you like. I really love the bowl cut old skool stuff especially A Hard Day's Night and Help! you should watch the movies too, barrels of cheese.

Definately get the White Album, one of their best IMO.

I can't remember - was it Revolver or Rubber Soul that marked their transistion into hippies?

Beatles compilations should be shunned, because there's no way to compile the best of their music since most of it is in the same league (barring the first two albums).

The albums in chronological order and my rating:

Please Please Me - 3.5
With the Beatles - 3.5
A Hard Day's Night - 4.0
Beatles For Sale - 3.5
Help! - 4.0
Rubber Soul - 4.5
Revolver - 4.5
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band - 5
Magical Mystery Tour - 4.5
The Beatles [White Album] - 4.5
Yellow Submarine - 3
Abbey Road - 5
Let It Be - 3.5
Past Masters, Volume One - 4.5
Past Masters, Volume Two - 4.5
