Brokeback Mountain

Aye it seems that Ang Lee is back on Hollywood's good books after the film did so well at the Golden Globes. Anyone seen this? Any decent? Might catch it this weekend imo.

Ah, the Gay Cowboy (TM) movie everyone is talking about.

Not sure I could stand watching men slobbering over each other...

I told you guys he should have made The Hulk into a gay green guy. ;)

Hmmm... I wonder if it's going to be as good as Happy Together. I quite liked that movie but many people were turned off by the (few) love scenes.
I don't mind guys kissing eachother. It doesnt excite me or anything, but I'm not offended or bothered or whatever when I see it. Just 2 guys slobbering. So what!?

I plan on seeing it at some point, either at the cinemas or on DVD. Ang Lee is an utterly superb filmmaker and I'm a fan of his.

I'm looking forward to seeing it.

Ang Lee is a decent director, the two leads are decent actors and it makes a nice change to see Homosexuality not being skirted upon.

You know what the "Gay Cowboy" tag really pisses me off.

I'm sure there is much more to the story then the central characters having gay tendencies. I don't believe it's even been confirmed they're actually gay.

They could be bisexual or even have gay tendencies, it doesn't make them gay and even if it did like I said that's not the entire story.

We don't call The English Patient "A Heterosexual desert story" or Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon "A Chink soppy romance" do we!

I doubt very much there is any beefing as you put it, this is an American film after all.

Damn it, I don't care about all the gay themes in modern films. I agree very much with Brad.

Bring back Wild West movies in the style of Sergio Leone. These were the only ones really worth of watching (apart from a few others like "Unforgiven" or several John-Wayne-films).

i dont really (at all) like romantic dramas, yet i felt somewhat pressured into seeing this because the automatic reaction people give if you say you dont want to see the movie is 'two guys getting off makes you uncomfortable does it!'.

to which the answer is yes, just like a boy and a girl getting off in front of me makes me uncomfortable, its something i don't need to see and interests me even less as a main subject for a film (the critically acclaimed 'notebook' was one of the worst films ever made as far as im concerned). Now I cant deny women getting of turns me on but still, i find it annoying people got at me for not wanting to see this particular movie.

I saw it, im sure if you like dramatic love stories it is great, but for me every minute was a wasted minute...

I'd like to see BM as well, I agree with what Brad says BTW. :)
I'd like to see Happy Together as well (just never got round to it), doesn't mean I'm necessarily put off because of the two main characters sexual preferences :)

You know, the people giving you strange looks for not wanting to watch this movie, because it deals with a gay issue (lol), are in my opinion just pretending scumbags wanting to fit into the 'modern day' society, while secretly they are disgusted by two guys beefing each other.

Or it could be exactly the way round, as shown in "American Beauty".

I'm not against a person, because of his sexual tendencies. But why make a movie that deals with the matter? The facts that every review is mentioning that the film deals with homosexuality and that it won a Golden Globe because of that matter, are evidences that homosexuality is still regarded as unnatural or at least unusual.

i dont think you would find anyone denying Ang picked the film because it tackled a touchy subject (whether it should be a touchy subject or not is unfortunately irrelevant), and yes the acting was convincing, it was a brave move for Heath 'heartbreak high' ledger considering whilst he is quite good at foppish comedy he's sucked in pretty much every serious role he's tried (IMO of course ;)).

but at the end of the day i didnt like any of the characters enough to care what happened to them, i felt the whole thing dragged on immensely. but then thats me, a self confessed love drama hater :P

I dont care for the film at all, and the fact the story and plot seem pretty lame doesnt help for me, then add on the gay theme (which is awfully advertised as such!) and you got a film I will avoid forever as far as I can see.

I cannot see even 1 reason to ever see the film, I would rather waste my time watching films I am looking forward to and own already. Just becuase a film comes out and everyone loves it and gives it awards because its gay, doesnt make me want to see it any more. If it was a straight film noone would be throwing awards at it, its the usual Oscar contender even before the film was finished! its sad.

You see, the fact that "Paradise Now" received the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, might prevent it from receiving an Oscar.

Not so "Brokeback Mountain" as it has a gay theme.

The question I have is: Is BM getting all this praise because it's a good film or is it because it's a politically correct film? If it's the former, then fine. I suspect the latter, however, also has something to do with it. Like if you don't watch or subscribe to the film you're an automatic homophobe. In Britain a woman was questioned (read: harrassed) by Police for merely saying she didn't approve of gays adopting. I'm sure it IS a good film regardless of the sexuality... but I've heard it's pretty explicit with regards to the boys' beefing and I honestly don't wanna watch that. Doesn't mean I disapprove, just I don't wanna watch. Fair enough?

Yes fair enough. I suspect both Mark equally.

I've heard from many sources it's a very well made film and Ang Lee's best film to date.
are in my opinion just pretending scumbags wanting to fit into the 'modern day' society, while secretly they are disgusted by two guys beefing each other.
Two of my ex-colleagues said on more than one occasion in the same sentence:

"I'm not homophobic but it's wrong to be gay, it's not natural".

Of which I challenged them and said "If you think it's wrong you must be a little homophobic". They disagreed. Of course they said this as it's uncool to be homophobic.

I'm not saying it's wrong to be a little homophobic, far from it just that you should admit it when you are. We all have our personal opinion on the level we draw the line.

I don't want to see two men shagging (I don't care about kissing though) but that doesn't mean it bothers me in the slightest. As Brokeback Mountain is about this subject I feel it only right it should be authentically portrayed.
Or it could be exactly the way round, as shown in "American Beauty".
What happened in this? Remind me.
If it was a straight film noone would be throwing awards at it
That is utter rubbish. Films similar to this but with a male/female relationship have been winning awards for years and years.

Sure it has given the film extra publicity though and so it should. It's about time an American film covered the subject in an adult frank manner, to often the gay person is the butt of the joke.

The scene when the neighbour's father (was it him?) who has always bad-mouthed gay people turns out to be gay himself. That garage scene, you know.

Nope, they single out a retarded person, freak, or (not in a racist way) a black man and fling awards at them, gay is in the same lame category if it were straight it would not be getting a look in. These special categories they single out are a joke and they advertise that category over the acting as to push it in our faces that they are Black, retareded, gay etc.. when really I dont care what they are they could be anything, but singling out special catergories is a joke I say. its racist I say and award cerimonies still get away with blatant shit.

Awards are like shit, theres always another one waiting to come out and the results are the same, SHIT!

Wait... I just figured out the perfect formula for an award-winning film concept.

I'm going to write a screenplay and direct a film with a certain kind of person as the main character:

A retarded, gay, black guy who has to struggle with the prejudices in this world.

It works all the time sadly :( people even say it as a joke and then go on to win awards :( Tom Hanks did it more than once and won more than once for them reasons when he definatly did not deserve it.

Awards for me just never sit right, its all polotics and a fake image of films that does not fit with most peoples tastes anyway.

Homophobia is a fear of homosexuality. I'm not afraid of it, like I am heights or enclosed spaces, and I suspect neither are most people labelled homophobic. It's a mis-nomer. You can think homosexuality is wrong or unnatural without hating or maltreating gays. PC confuses the issues and tries to control the way we think. If you don't have a gay friend you must be a bigot, like you've dropped out of some 'adopt a gay' program. Do I think homosexuality is morally wrong? No. I think consenting adults have a right to do what they want with whomever they want. Is it natural? That's trickier. Obvious procreation was designed as a male-female concept. But in terms of physical pleasure, if same sex persons are attracted to each other, it must be natural, right?

I couldn't agree more with what you've said here Mark.

Okay taking for a second I've misused Homophobia what is the right word?

Romero what do you mean by category? As there are actual categories in the Oscars (or any other film award I'm aware of) with these categories.

Sorry I don't understand your point.
if it were straight it would not be getting a look in.
See now you're wrong I go back to "The English Patient" it did very well at the box office, critically and also won 9 Oscars.
