The Silence of the Lambs: Ultimate Edition announced:

Post by bradavon »

http://www.dvdactive.com/news/releases/ ... lambs.html

We don't have the full specs for this one at present, but we can tell you that it will include over three hours of special features such as a 'Jodie Foster and Jonathan Demme: The Beginning' featurette (16 mins), a 'Jodie Foster and Jonathan Demme: Making of The Silence of the Lambs' (27 mins), a 'Page to Screen' documentary (41 mins) and a 'Scoring the Silence' featurette (15 mins).

Cover art is in the above link.

No word on the Criterion commentary but 3 hours of exras is much more than the old SE. The "Page to Screen" documentary is new.

I'll probably upgrade to this, unlike The Terminator: UE there is enough to justify it.

Nice one.

Its about time I bought this movie on DVD. Looks like theres some nice docs on there including a meaty one at 64mins.

And glad to see a featurette on the musical score, theres not enough of these on DVD. And with Howard Shore too - quality.

I've seen that hour-long doco from the original SE, it kicks ass.

As far as I can remember the other new Sony MGM UE's aren't from HD Remasters, just look at The Terminator. It's the same transfer.

That said the DVD Active article doesn't mention AV period so who knows.

Considering there looks to be no commentary I can't work out how they come to 3 hours of extras. I'm sure those times above (assuming they're correct) don't come to 180 minutes.

These are all the new Sony MGM UE DVDs right? Have I missed any? -

Rocky UE Box Set
The Terminator: UE
Magnificent Seven: UE
The Silence of the Lambs: UE
Platoon: UE

The Terminator, Magnificent Seven and Platoon UE's aren't very different from the older SE DVDs.

Yeah, came out last Autumn in the U.K.

Apparently the image has been improved and all five films now have 5.1 audio.

I had to replace my old set which succumbed to laser rot, although at last checking 4/5 discs still played without bother. That's why I'm flogging it cheap on my trade list (to be found at KFF). I might reduce it even further...

Aren't some of the extras missing found on the old box set? Is it much better PQ?

I'm not aware of any missing extras? In fact I noticed three new ones. I didn't do a direct comparison myself but I saw one on line that showed the improvement - I don't know where so try searching. The old R2 was worse than the R1 anyways... I recall DVD Beaver had a comp of that. From what I could tell the new Ultimate Rocky is brighter, less drab, less grainy, and slightly more colourful. Not sure how much the sequels have been improved visually, but they all have new 5.1/DTS soundtracks.

R1 Anthology vs R2 Collection

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/DVDCompare7/rocky.htm

From memory the R1 images here roughly represent what's on the R2 anthology - but we also carry over the 'Collection' extras and get some new ones into the bargain.

DVD Times review:

http://dvdtimes.co.uk/content.php?contentid=59479

My previous box set also succumbed to disc rot - first time it's ever happened to me.

I'm glad an improved set was available and now I own it. :)

I watched the R2 Rocky IV today from the original set. This DVD has some of the meanest LFE activity Ive ever heard ! From the music anyway. The surround effects were pretty pathetic though, resulting to just some kinda synth bass coming out the rear speakers when theres music.

Rocky III had much better surround sound.

I dont think i'll upgrade to the ultimate. Picture does look grainy and soft at times but its good enough for me.

Has anyone been able to source a UK R2 UE review?

I'd be interested to read it.

It disgusts me that they remove the captions in some films and replace them with ugly player-generated ones. They're a part of the film for God's sake, and are designed to fit in with it.

it's also missing some credit at the beginning of the film and also suffers a pixelation error around the 30 minute mark.avoid.

I'm trying to find out if it does actually have DTS or not. If so I'll probably pick it up.

DTS + 90 minutes of new extras are enough to warrant an upgrade for me. Oh and it's clearly sharper.
I've seen that review but I don't believe it's accurate. Look at the number of soundtracks on his review copy. I don't believe at the very least it's the UK R2 he's reviewing.

Besides those screenshots to me at least look like an improvement over the SE and Criterion. The image is definitely sharpest on the UE.

As for all those moaning the colours are not the same as the Criterion deliberately ignore the Criterion is an old, poor and of most importance non-anamorphic picture.

And your source is?

Personally it wouldn't bother me if the subtitle they used was nice to look at. Take Scarface R1 SE the prologue text looks SOOO much nicer than the ugly removable subtitles they went with on the UK R2.

Why should non-English speakers have burnt in English text?
