DTO - Download to Own - is this a good idea?

Post by grim_tales »

Hey,

I think I heard on the C5 news yesterday that King Kong (2005) is the first DTO movie, for £20 (?) you can download it to your PC to keep and you also get a free copy of the DVD. Its supposed to combat piracy (or something like that).

Whats the point though :? I mean, it'd be a lot cheaper to buy the real DVD and play it in your PC, no? I guess then people would just make a DVD-R of it :?

If it was £10-13 then I'd say it was a good idea but £20 no thanks.

The file is bound to be in some really annoying copy protected format.

yep, for £5 in a format that was playable in divx capable dvd players I would go for it. Anything more an you may as well buy the dvd with all the cool packaging and extras :P

edit: of course to get dts or anything like that then even on the fastest uk connection you're gonna be waiting a long time.

Yup, pretty pointless if you ask me. I'd much rather have nice, shiny packaging along with the film.

Never. I wouldn't take even if I got for free. I'm a dvd collector, and I want to have my dvds right here in my dvd shelf, packed in their original package.

For me collecting dvds is like collecting stamps. You can't fucking download and print them... :D

For free I would, I'd rather not pay to watch all films.

I can see it taking off though, look at ITunes and the like. The bandwith will have to be really good as people will otherwise get bored of waiting.

I seriously doubt it has DTS and even if it does have 5.1 the bitrate will be considerably though than DTS' bitrate.

A rip off. Don't bother. Buy the DVD for half the price.

I thought this was gong to be about PC software-on-demand from the title. I could care less what they do with the physical discs, as long as they don't implement DMR or some equally draconian anti-piracy, anti-import methods like Sony plan to do with Blu-ray.

I'd be surprised if they don't equally surprised if in a few months it's not cracked.

Pfff... whenever I download something I automatically 'own' it. Its on my PC, isnt it? I'd never pay these idiotic prices for some bits and bytes of data.
If I want a movie I'll buy it in the shop. If they dont have it, I'll download it for free... but I'll never pay for online data, unless it's a very very fair price.

The asking price is a bit too high. Assuming that the quality is reasonable then it may be OK for the odd film that you're only slightly interested in. But as mentioned, it's easier and more convenient just to buy the DVD.

It is predicted that HD/Blue ray will be the last of the physical medium for watching movies... future formats will be downloads on your hard drives. Kinda like with today's MP3 culture. Youth's today seem to prefer mass data storage instead of shelf space. The days of decorating your room with beautiful LEs and tons of DVDs will soon be over... perhaps... :?:

There will always be a market for a physical medium.

It's a long way off before we see DVD content downloadable at exactly the same quality and even longer before HD content.

The size of an average film is much more than an average mp3.

My broter though you're right barely ever buys CDs anymore he downloads them from MSN Music (silly I know). He usually opts for a few tracks not albums though. I suspect he'll grow out of this and buy CD albums when he get older.

When you buy a DVD you automatically "own" it, so surely you can do what you like with it, copy it to DVD-R for a friend or something? :?

As far as I know, the argument is that whilst you own the physical disc itself, the intellectual property (as in the film, menu etc. etc.) on it belongs to the studio. So, unless they authorise a copy of a disc, you can't make one.
This is why even backing up a DVD is considered dodgy turf.

Aren't you allowed to make a single back-up for personal use?

Nah. Not legally anyway. This may be the case regarding software, but I think even that is frowned upon now.

In most free countries, yes.
When you buy a DVD you automatically "own" it, so surely you can do what you like with it, copy it to DVD-R for a friend or something?
Hell no. Lending a DVD, CD or Software to a friend is illegal. You should know that.

Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Yes for real.
Two people have access to the same product, and the product has only been bought once. Clearly illegal.

Well wait... then it would be illegal to invite my friends to watch a film?

You also mentioned software... does this include multiplayer video games? Am I not allowed to play say "Mario Kart" head-to-head with my brothers if they don't all own the game themselves?

LOL! :D The silliest shit I have ever heard. What a sad country France is, man!
