Got this off imdb. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0002436/bio
Similarly, Salma Hayek is not an Arab but also has Middle Eastern roots (although to a lesser extent than Shannon).
TBH it's quite a manipulative question. She's clearly not an Arab but obviously has Middle Eastern roots. This ties into the discussion we had on another thread, I think it was about Kelly Hu and stuff?Shannon Elizabeth was born on September 7, 1973 in Houston, Texas, the daughter of a Syrian/Lebanese father and a mother also of mixed decent (Cherokee Indian).

I remember Shannon before she was famous poor little struggling wanabe
Anyway that interview thingie was interesting and really some of them people are thick I guess, but in defence of them really do we need to know about "all" religions? do you?
I know many things about many religions and such, but I also dont know many things, obviously. Many religions I am sure I have never even heard of, making people look ignorant in interviews isnt really nice and I am not sure I would ever take part in them as some interviewers go too far.
That interviewer was good mind you and he seems a great bloke
and inst really making them feel like morons.
I have seen so many snippets like that on TV and such and ussually the people come off as total morons, but really a lot of the time we dont "need" to know these things they ask, its not as if your life depends on it, its just down to how much you want to learn and know.

Yeah, I guess it was an associative assumption. Most Arabs ARE Muslim though, right? What percentage of Arabs would you say are Christian? It seems to be outlawed in many fundamentalist Islamic countries, along with Judaism etc.thelostdragon wrote:Don't get me wrong, Mark.... being an Arab doesn't automatically make you a Muslim. Arabic is a language and being an Arab explains where you or your ancestors originate from. Islam is a religion and being a Muslim defines what a person believes in. In Dubai live a lot of Arabs who are Christians.

And if this Leno-style comedy skit were done in Dubai, asking religious questions related to Buddhism, Christianity, Catholicism, Taoism, or Hinduism (just for a smattering of examples), what are the chances that answers would be equally as pathetic?

With the only difference that you guys wouldn't understand what they said if there weren't any subtitles. 8)the68monkey wrote:And if this Leno-style comedy skit were done in Dubai, asking religious questions related to Buddhism, Christianity, Catholicism, Taoism, or Hinduism (just for a smattering of examples), what are the chances that answers would be equally as pathetic?

Yes, you're right about that.Markgway wrote:Most Arabs ARE Muslim though, right?
Hmmm... good question. Right away I'd say 10%, but that seems like a real lot if you consider the fact that about 300.000.000 people in this world are Arabs. What I know is that a lot of Arab Christians belong to the Assyrian Church of the East, the Coptic Church and the Syrian-Orthodox Church. That's what I learnt when I was in school in Jordan. There is also a small group of Protestant Arabs out there which due to American missionaries. What percentage of Arabs would you say are Christian?
Any specific example you have?It seems to be outlawed in many fundamentalist Islamic countries, along with Judaism etc.

There's a Christian due to be executed because of his religion. I can't remember the country off the top of my head but it was in the news recently. Maybe someone else recalls? But it seems in some Arabic countries you can be executed for being openly Christian or promoting Christianity.Any specific example you have?
EDIT: It's Afghanistan.

You are talking about Afghanistan and the story has been over for weeks. The guy got his trial and was not sentenced to any punishment. He was not charged for being Christian, but for converting from Islam to another religion. Usually, when this happens, the shariah law demands that Muslim scientists or so talk to him for three days, trying to find out why he left Islam. If they cannot convince him to come back to Islam, he is to be executed to save him the punishment on the day of judgement.
However, people who were born of any religion different from Islam have always lived in peace together with Muslims (before the Israel-thing in 1945). The oldest churches of the world are in the Muslim world. The Church of Birth in Betlehem was fought over by Christian sects or so. In the end they decided to give the key to the Muslim community which to this day unlocks the door every morning and locks it every night.

Yeah, I edited that in earlier.thelostdragon wrote:You are talking about Afghanistan
Didn;t realise. The news just stopped talking about it.and the story has been over for weeks.
That's a relief. The guy got his trial and was not sentenced to any punishment.
Six and half a dozen. He was not charged for being Christian, but for converting from Islam to another religion.
