Sendit.com - MGM SE sale at £5.99 each

Post by EvaUnit02 »

MGM SE sale over at Sendit.com (£5.99 each), alot of great titles there.
http://www.sendit.com/video/promotion/0 ... itions.0.5

All 3 Leone Dollars trilogy SEs, Raging Bull UE, New York, New York SE, The Usual Suspects SE, Fargo SE.

I went with Raging Bull UE and New York, New York (reportedly a lesser Scorsese film, but for that price and the features that tower over the R1 - eg both cuts of the film, 2* 25 min featurettes, etc).

Thanks for the heads up on New York, New York. I was going to go for the R1 box set but won't now I know NYNY has considerably less extras on R1.

The R1 does retain English Mono not on the UK R2 though.

Eva you may also want to know Raging Bull UK replaces the original Dolby Surround with DTS. I hear remix is a good one but it may still bother some. It's about time I picked up the WB box set though.

Of the 3 Leone Dollars trilogy SEs do you have to watch them in order to get the most out of it? TGTBATU is the best right?

I've gone for:

The Good, The Bad And The Ugly: SE (FYI the original DVD is £5.99 in HMV Stores at the moment)
Raging Bull: UE
New York, New York: SE

I was tempted to go for Last Waltz too but despite being a Scorsese picture it sounds pretty dull. FYI Good, The Bad And The Ugly is also £5.99 (after vouchers) at CD WOW.

I have no interest in the MGM R1 boxset. Boxcar Bertha looks to just a pants Roger Corman-produced exploitation trash and I have no interest in a doco of band I honestly had never heard bout 'til I read up on The Last Waltz (might pick it if I see it going for v cheap though, the doco is reportedly excellent). The NYNY R2 SE is missing the original mono, but with many extras over the R1 I'll let it slide this time.

There has never been a DVD release of Raging Bull with the original mono. I've only ever seen RB in stereo and prologic anyway so I won't be missing it (on DVD and TV).

Nah, they're all completely standalone. Although I do recommend watching them in order, cuz you might be disappointed if you start with TGTBATU and then progress backwards. Yes, TGTBATU is the best of the 3 films; but For a Few Dollars More is my personal favourite of the trilogy.

I also highly recommend picking up A Fistful of Dynamite (if don't mind missing 6 secs of mandatory cuts by UK law due to what they regard as "animal cruelty"), it's more or less a natural expansion TGTBATU. Has a similiar fun tongue in cheek and buddy film atmosphere to TGTBATU and greatly expands the commentary on war seen in TGTBATU as well.

Thanks

I meant Surround is at least closer to Mono than DD5.1 is. Yeah Boxcar Bertha doesn't look all that good but it would go some way to completing my Scorsese collection.

I've completed my Wong Kar-Wai and Baz Lurman (I know not hard) collections. Completing a Scorsese collection is going to be much harder.

As for The Last Waltz check out the listing:

The Band, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Staples, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Ronnie Hawkins, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, Dr John, Paul Butterfield

There is some massive names in there. I'm sure I'll pick it up one day. Three titles in one order is enough for me.

I've only seen Romeo & Juliet, it was very well staged and executed (the opening prologue was brilliant IMO) but was far too glossy for my liking. I've only seen small bits of Moulin Rouge, I was horrorified at how he murdered Smells Like Teen Spirit.

EDIT:
I haven't seen Strictly Ballroom but do remember my older siblings (brother and sister) refering to it as Strictly Boring in discussion after seeing it theatrically. I also remember watching the music video "Love is in the Air" on telly.

That was the whole point. It's not murdered it's a deliberate re-working. It's an awesome film IMO.

The first half is stronger though. I've recently bought but haven't seen yet Strictly Ballroom (R1 SE is the way to go, closely by the R4). I hear it's very good, my Mum loves it.

Eastwood's excellent Unforgiven is also £6.59 at Sendit:

Thanks for the comments on "Fistful of Dynamite" but I doubt it will be any time soon I see that, considering I've only just bought TGTBATU.

Did you get the extended SE or the old barebones TC release?

I love that film, but I've exhausted my money until the next paycheck, bought a fuckton of DVDs alone within the last month.
The Band, Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, The Staples, Emmylou Harris, Muddy Waters, Eric Clapton, Neil Diamond, Ronnie Hawkins, Ron Wood, Ringo Starr, Dr John, Paul Butterfield

Woah. Some excellent artists in there indeed. Will definitely pick it up one day as well.

My pay date is the 28th so it's DVD buying time for me :D

SE.

I don't want to buy the film twice. The old bare-bones DVD is as you say old and bare-bones, it hasn't been given the Remastered treatment and is a very basic DVD.

Sure Mark likes the Theatrical Cut better but I'm happy to give the Extended Cut ago. The SE looks the much better DVD all round. If the additions bug me then I'll check out the bare-bones DVD. The new voice additions sound worrying.
