Whom the Weinsteins Want for Their SEVEN SAMURAIS Remake?

Someone from Donnie Yen’s agent company, Hong Kong-based Mandarin Films, has been talking to the local press lately about a remake of late Japanese master Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurais pushed by The Weinsteins Co. During the recently closed Cannes Film Festival, Donnie Yen had a series discussion with Harvey Weinstein, who asked Yen to star in the remake. In addition, the Weinsteins would also invite Zhang Ziyi and George Clooney to join the cast. A Hong Kong newspaper has speculated that Clooney’s role would be Kambei, the leader of the seven samurais and Zhang Ziyi’s role would be Shino the village girl. Reportedly, the remake would tell a somewhat updated version of the original story featuring some CG-enhanced fight scenes and would cost approximately US$100 million to make. Two most well-known Hollywood moguls remaking a Japanese classic is already interestingly odd and how would George Clooney fit into the picture? It may not be a faithful remake of the original, but I still want to say - go ahead to make it and stay away from the classic.

LOOOOL! Clooney as Kambei? If they have to go all blockbuster and mainstream, wouldn't Ken Watanabe be a much better choice?

I don't get it.
They've already shot a remake in the US (Magnificent Seven) and in China (Seven Swords).

What more can they do ?

Well, both films still had a little touch of their own. I guess what the TWC wants to do is to make a complete remake of the film in terms of storyline. But sure as hell not in terms of running time.

I liked "Bangkok Dangerous" a lot. And the fact that the hero is not a mute anymore is really terrible.

Hmm, a remake of The Hitcher...
This is from Empire Online, who in turn cite The Hollywood Reporter:

When considering who could take over the psycho stares and battered clothing of Rutger Hauer for the Hitcher, there’s only one man for the job, according Michael Bay's production horror remake production company Platinum Dunes - and that man is Sean Bean.

Bay and co. have decided that Bean will play the part of the murderous serial killer who turns a couple’s romantic road trip into a horrific nightmare.

Sophia Bush (One Tree Hill) is starring as the girlfriend in the couple, while David Meyers will call the shots from Eric Bernt’s script. Bean will start causing havoc later this month in Texas.

Yeah, Sean Bean can be menacing, but I doubt that he'd even come to how Rutger Hauer was in the original film - which is terrific. Fuck you Michael Bay, stop shitting on classics.

Hmm... it wasn't a couple in the original. It was a teenager alone on his first road trip at night. The one-on-one play between Hauer and Howell was menacing. I can't see this being replicated with two protagonists. I think Bean will probably do a good job, he's better than he gets credit for. But like Eva says: tough to top the mad Dutchman (no, not Yi-Long!)

Reknown hack musician and director Rob Zombie is doing the latest Halloween film, the brothers Weinstein are producing. There's conflicting reports about whether this is a sequel or a remake. Zombie said in his blog that it was remake but not too long after recanted that statement.

I couldn't give a fuck either way. Anything beyond no.1 (and maybe no.2) is a waste of time.

Rob Zombie to Helm New Halloween Film

Dimension Films has announced that they will make a new "Halloween" movie with Rob Zombie (The Devil's Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses) writing, directing and serving as a producer. Malek Akkad of Trancas International Films (Halloween H20: 20 Years Later) will produce the feature along with Andy Gould of Vision Entertainment Group (The Devil's Rejects, House of 1000 Corpses). Zombie will also serve as music supervisor on the film. Miramax Films will co-finance the development with Dimension Films. The announcement was made today by The Weinstein Company co-chairman, Bob Weinstein.

Zombie's vision of this film is an entirely new take on the legend and will satisfy fans of the classic "Halloween" legacy while beginning a new chapter in the Michael Myers saga. This new movie will not only appeal to horror fans, but to a wider movie-going audience as well. It will not be a copycat of any prior films in the "Halloween" franchise. The film is set for an October 2007 theatrical release.

Bob Weinstein stated, "Rob Zombie is a gifted musician and performer as well as a talented filmmaker. His vision for this new 'Halloween' is spectacular and I am thrilled to be collaborating with him and to work closely with Malek Akkad to continue the legacy built by his father, the late Moustapha Akkad."

Zombie said, "I have been a huge, huge fan of John Carpenter's original film since its release. So when Bob Weinstein approached me about this, I jumped at the chance to join forces with Dimension Films on this amazing project."

Sean Bean is a really great actor. I respect him a lot and it's sad to see him in so few leading roles.

I agree. It's a shame that he's been typecast as a villain; a supporting character who's either a villain or a traitor; or exits the film early (usually through death).

I'm one of the few people who thought he was an effective villain in Goldeneye. But I guess some people aren't happy unless the bad guy is a scar-faced baldie who drools at the mouth.

I also thought Sean Bean was an excellent villain in Goldeneye as well. He was the best villain in Pierce Broson James Bond series. That movie just gelled together, everything was right about it.

Exactly.... They put alot of thought for Sean Bean character in Goldeneye. A 00 Agent, Im surprised that didn't think of that before

Oh yeah, I have never realised that at all. That is true. Ahhh like you said it a minor blip on a flawless movie, (even up there by my personal fav - Spy who Loved me, my most fav bond movie ever)

I think the fact that he says it more than once doesn't help.

It's as bad as the old "things I do for England" you heard in the Connery/Moor movies.

I can't believe Connery said it. I'm sure he shudders now.

I liked Sean Bean, he was a good villain but there should of been more explanation of how/why he became evil? All that because his face got scarred (I know it was Bonds fault but still). Pff.

Not only that, but because he left without him and blew the whole factory up, although Travallian was still inside. Sure, Bond thought he was dead, but try telling that to someone who almost die twice because of that.

There's also the idea that 006 was actually an adopted Russian whose parents were betrayed by the British government. He'd obviously cooked up some kind of revenge plan in advance with the General and 007 ruined it by changing the timer.
