Variety reports that New Line Cinema has picked up the remake rights to BATTLE ROYALE, Kinji Fukasaku’s notorious shocker from 2000. Based on the novel by Koushun Takami, ROYALE is set in a futuristic Japan where every year, the government randomly selects a ninth-grade class to be taken to a remote island. There they are handed backpacks containing various weapons and instructed that they are to kill each other until only one is left standing; to insure their cooperation, they are outfitted with explosive collars that will detonate if they try to escape—or if more than one student is alive after 72 hours. The film sparked worldwide controversy in the post-Columbine era for its graphic depictions of teenagers slaughtering each other, which prevented it from seeing official U.S. release—making it highly ironic that a Hollywood studio now considers it appropriate for remaking. Roy Lee, the man behind the RING and GRUDGE remakes et al., will produce the new BATTLE with Neal Moritz, who’s also behind the new I AM LEGEND and the redux of MALEFIQUE; no writer or director has been announced. —

ah crap, they will butcher a perfectly great movie!!! hollywood suck for this cant they get any of their own ideas... i checked out the american ring, but it wasnt so great, and the grudge i didnt even bother with since SMG gets on my nerves and the trailers looked shit..however the poster was cool but thats about it lol.

I don't why everyone gets their knickers in a knot every time a new remake is announced, it's not like the original film ceases to exist.

Honestly, who gives a shit if in the eyes of Joe Average cinemagoer it's the only version of that particular story? It's not like they would've seen the subtitled original anyway.

I'm sure Kinji Fukasaku was thinking exactly about Columbine when he was shooting BR.

People take things far to literally sometimes often without even seeing a film. It's not supposed to be real-life, it's also supposed to be funny. I laughed and I'm sure many did.

Whoever your source is should get their facts straight. I don't remember any slaughtering. Shooting someone and even with a machine gun is not slaughtering them.

True Brad, BR is supposed to be a black comedy, a satire. It is hard to watch, thats the point. And not all the teenagers shoot each other, some decide not to play, others want a peaceful solution. Even the scary/hot Motsuko has a reason for acting how she does.

They've not got any choice I don't think. You can't copyright an idea afaik. The stupid thing is the last few years has seen a fair few high profile foreign language films just release the original.

You can copyright a script and a movie. So if a company bases their film on your script then it's breach of copyright. Not the easiest case to prove, however, unless we're talking scene for scene or exact dialogue. I expect these Asian companies are just selling the remake rights for cash to put into their own productions and don't give a shit about what happens outside Asia.
