21 Grams: Special Edition R1 - 03/10/2006

Post by bradavon »

Universal Home Video has revealed early details on a new special edition of the critically acclaimed 21 Grams which stars Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, and Benico Del Toro.

This single-disc release region 1 will be available to own from the 3rd October, and should set you back around $19.98. As before, the disc will carry a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer, along with both English Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 Surround tracks. Universal has yet to reveal the extras - but we'll bring you further details very shortly.

Single disc is a bit worrying. I hope it's not the existing DVD with the 18 Minute Making Of (which was dropped from the R1) added.

What is most surprising is how long it's taken. If the extras are decent I'll upgrade without a doubt. 21 Grams is utterly outstanding.

I bought it on release as I couldn't wait for the price drop; I did wait for the UK DVD though to get the Making Of. I'm not bitter though as I'd buy this film again and again to get a better version.

I really hope we get Deleted Scenes, Director's Commentary and Cast Interviews.

Yeah, it is indeed such a great film, but I thought that I'd still wait, because I somehow felt that there would be a new release one day. And whenever I'd want to watch this I'd rent it for free from the video rental I work at.

I told you a while back B, the director didnt want extras and didnt want to be involved in any special ediytion of the film. Its his flm and he got his way, I guess he now wants extras, or the studio has ignored him and went ahead to make some cash.

And your point R.? I know you did. It didn't stop me buying the DVD then and won't stop me buying it now.

I won't trade/sell my UK R2 just yet as October is a long way away but look forward to getting my hands on this, assuming it has decent extras that is.

The point was

this special edition may well be shit if the director wants nothing to do with it :D so no comentary etc.

I just think they are trying to cash in on his next films release in cinemas, so then they can put in big words from the diretcor of ..etc..

Man I can't wait for that one, party time. Thanks btw.

I couldn't care less if they're cashing in as long as it's better than my existing DVD but it needs to have more than just an added featurette.

October is a long time.

What a joke. It's JUST getting the 18 minute Making of. R2 Europe and R4 has had since day one:

Why??? Amores Perros got loads of lovely extras. All this time and they're just adding the same extra they already had access to the first time.

Mmmm I didn't like this film, and could see what all the fuss was about. I did keep an open mind, but I felt the story was sooo slow. The acting was very good, especially Sean Penn, but just didn't connect with the story. Is it just me, or did anyone else feel the same.

Still Ms N Watts has a fantastic body ;)

It's certainly not me I found the film riveting, clever, very well written, directed, acted, shot. It's pretty much flawless IMO.

Jesus I hate it when I am right :( that just sucks badly!

I guess he is sticking with his "I dont want extras on the film" huffy he is having. Quite sad really.

You are? That's not what you said a few posts up:

"I told you a while back B, the director didnt want extras and didnt want to be involved in any special ediytion of the film. Its his flm and he got his way, I guess he now wants extras, or the studio has ignored him and went ahead to make some cash."

The opposite in fact. I wonder why he wanted extras for Amores Perros.

hey,

some directors that are devoted extras buffs just make decisions that certain films aren't meant to discuss. Look at Magnolia and Punch Drunk Love. Otherwise Paul Thomas Anderson really loves to yack. :)

Alejandro's film with the added making-of was a perfectly satisfactory release this side of the pond considering the quality of the film. The re-release in America, of course a little insulting...

I've never worked out Allen's stance on Mono. Sure 5.1 is certainly not needed for every film but Stereo really opens up "talky" films with little or no music.

I saw the original R1 on sale for $15 in the high street shops, didn't buy it though. Might pick it up in a few days if it's still there.

I ordered R1 Amores Perros cuz it was cheap and becuz Brad highly recommends it.

Babel is looking interesting, when's that supposed to be out?

It's not a bad DVD bar being bare-bones.

Thanks dude, we do have similar tastes in films. You guys are lucky you can pick up import DVDs locally.

Did you like 21 Grams? If so you'll love this. It probably has the edge too but both are outstanding.

I've no idea  . I bet it will be awesome. It looks to be out in America.

Yeah, I couldn't give a shit bout an 18min EPK fluff featurette - AV specs and price are paramount in this situation. Anamorphic transfer + DTS track = all I need (usually I'd want the best DVD possible, but if all the "best version" has over the R1 is EPK rubbish then I don't care).

I ordered it (Amores) from Deepdiscountdvd, they currently have a Lion's Gate sale on. The original release was actually cheaper than the budget range re-release.

Haven't seen it, I remember really wanting to see it in theatres in 2003 but never got around to it.

I did see Mystic River, which I thought was outstanding at the time (when I rewatched it on DVD I felt it had lost it's initial impact on further viewings. Still a very good film though.) I highly recommend Clint Eastwood's underrated Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - terrific thriller with great performances from Kevin Spacey and John Cusack. Also see Unforgiven, one of the best revisionist Westerns that stands right up there with Peckinpah's and Sergio Leone's best. Clint, Morgan Freeman, Gene Hackman and that British guy who played Dumbledoore before he died a year or so back (can't remember his name) are all terrific in it.

I'm in no hurry to see it.

Unforgiven really is a great film. I believe it's Richard Harris who's in the film. As a direct answer to Leone's (and to be fair, most) Westerns, it's unmatched. The Wild West has never been as dirty and as... wrong. No glamour, just a rough, rough existence.

I thought Mystic River was okay. I know the point is nothing much happens and it's slow paced but I was getting a bit bored tbh.

Million Dollar Baby is much better, that's low too.
EvaUnit02 wrote:Yeah, I couldn't give a shit bout an 18min EPK fluff featurette
It's a good EPK Featurette though, certainly better than nothing. Unless the R1 is much less I'd pick the UK R2 over it.

But then I paid full price for (£13.99 I think) for the UK R2. I love it that much. I wouldn't pay £13.99 now but I would insist on the extras.

You should definitely check out 21 Grams too. Watch it or Amores Perros first, you'll know you like the other then, they're similar in tone and style. Structure too.

Selected cinemas (WHY???) on October the 27th in America:

OMG check out the awesome cast and it even includes "Gael García Bernal" teaming up again since Amores Perros. I hear it's set on 3 continents and continues the director's interest in interlinking stories. My god this is going to rock! I soo can't wait.

I downloaded the trailer for this a few days ago, and like you, I'm really interested in this. Seems to show the various sides to a story, which is something that frankly, everyone needs to do with everything they hear in the news.

I love the narrative line of dialogue in the trailer that begins, "In the beginning, all the Lord's people from all parts of the world, spoke one language...".

'Can't wait!' is my official opinion on this ;)
