I thought the first movie was OK-ish. A bit too long and Orlando Bloom was horrible in it. His character was already written boringly, and his performance made it even worse. Johnny Depp was absolutely brilliant though, and created one of the most memorable characters in movie-history, and I really hope these next 2 Pirate flicks will build on that.

Pirates 1 could have been better if it would have had a better actor then Orlando Bloom in it, and it's pacing should have been a bit better. Also some of the supporting cast, most notably the father of Keira, and that uptight prick that fancies Keira, were horrible. The pirates were fun though.

The trailer to this 2nd movie looks pretty entertaining. It's sad to see orlando back but perhaps they've learned from the first movie and maybe he has improved a bit as an actor... (although I doubt it)

I enjoyed the first part until the super natural part started. I agree with Yi when he says that it felt too long. The finale was really overlong. But I remember how entertained I was when I saw it at the theatre. I expected some kind of serious pirate film. I hadn't heard about the film before and we chose to watch it when we arrived at the theatre. God, did I laugh. I also love the Klaus Badelt soundtrack.

As for the sequels. I'm looking forward to the second part, but even more for the third part as Chow Yun-fat plays the bad guy in it.

you know who I would have LOVED to have seen in this trilogy? Perhaps as a bad guy... Jean Reno! Maybe as a french pirate or something...
That guy has one of the best comic, dry wit I've ever seen. It was displayed in Wasabi very nicely (mediocre movie but nice performance by Reno) and I'd think he would fit perfectly in a movie like this...

I loved "Wasabi", but Reno in "Pirates"? Instead of Chow Yun-fat? Nah...

Yi, you'll have to check out "Tais-toi!" if you haven't already. Probably the funniest film with Reno.

Ow, I didnt mean Reno INSTEAD of Chow Yun Fat, but just maybe give him a big role in another Pirates of the Caribean story/movie. Perhaps in a 4th movie or something. Just someone I would have loved to have seen in this series.

never heard of Tais-Toi, I'll check out some info. it isnt that movie with gerard deperdieu, issit?

edit: ow... I see it IS the movie with depardieu. I thought this had gotten pretty mediocre reviews!? I MIGHT pick it up 1 day, but not too sure yet...

Man, shit on those reviews. It is an awesome film. Rent it for a start. In Germany it is called "Ruby & Quentin".

I never rent anymore. Back in VHS-days it was sometimes fun to rent a movie, because VHS movies were pretty expensive and there wsnt a huge catalogue to choose from in the stores. But nowadays it's almost just as cheap to buy a DVD as to rent one, plus when you rent one it's occasionally scratched, making it worthless. Plus I dont like the bother of going somewhere to rent it and then bringing it back again. In short: renting SUCKS

I'll pick it up when I see it for a fiver or something, just because I trust you, LD.
So if I find out it's shit, I'm coming after you, so better get those running shoes ready... :twisted:

Agree Yi, didn't think of Bloom's empty performance in POTC, but it was still a fine popcorn film and as you say, Depp was the real star. He was hilarious in it

Bloom didnt really carry the film, he just had supporting role really to Depp (even Knightley).

One of my students told me that Keith Richards is going to play Jack Sparrow's dad in one of the sequels. I haven't looked into it to see if he was pulling my leg or not.

Think I'll have to check on that. . . .

Just checked on that Keith Richards thing, and no official mention of it anywhere.

He'd have to play one of the skeletons, anyway.

However! I DID see that the magnificent Stellan Skarsgård will play "Bootstraps" Bill Turner, father to Orlando Bloom's Will Turner. Too bad the kid didn't pick up any acting talent from his "father." Let's hope Bloom gives a more convincing portrayal in the sequels.

Really looking forward to enjoying the sequels as much as I enjoyed the first one.

Keith Richards may appear in third "Pirates" film

Depp seems rather excited about it, anyway:

"We're all looking forward to the idea of Keith coming in and doing a cameo and it's looking very, very good," Depp told reporters on Tuesday, the day after "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dean Man's Chest," the second film in the franchise, had its London premiere.

"The one thing is you just never say it's definite until, for me, the guy steps on the set and the cameras are rolling, but it's certainly something I'd be excited about," the 43-year-old added.

Rent? Who rents any more? Two reasons I don't bother: DVDs can be bought cheaply if you know where to look and are prepared to wait (I prefer owning a film). Rental stores are never going to stock the types of films I like to watch.

WTF! Now that's funny. Some German retitles are hilarious. Ruby & Quentin is that after the leads?

Does anyone listen to Mark Kermode's film review on Radio 5? This will be a question to the people living in the UK of course. It is a Podcast though, which is how I listen to it.

I tell you Mark Kermode can really rant. His 15 minute rant on last Friday's Film Review about Pirates 2 was the funniest thing I've heard in a long time. Man he can speak fast.

As for the film the first was average to the extreme. Take Johnny Depp out of it and you have no film left. That's all you hear about Pirates 1 and agreed his performance was good but as good as people make out hell no. Oscar material good, of course not.

So we have Pirates 2 a film I hear is 150 minutes long and has no end but it does have about 12 different plots going on, to the point Keira Nightly needs to tell Orlando Bloom (of which Kermode refers to him as Orlendo Bland

) what's going on just so the audience can keep up.

Kermode does make a good point that fairground rides have a jump then nothing, then another jump then nothing. This is how I hear Pirates 2 works, we have an action set piece then nothing, an action set piece then nothing.

I quite liked "The Mexican" but other than that Gore Verbinski has done nothing to make me believe he has any talent. He completely killed the American Ringu (oh lets explain EVERY last subplot because Western audiences are SO stupid they will work out unless I do).

Bret Ratner makes better films than Gore Verbinski, no seriously he does by quite some way.

To put it another way "I'd rather have my eyes gouged out with a pitch fork than watch Pirates 2".

The movie is reportedly 140mins, which I have no problem with. A reviewer on TV yesterday was whining about how long Hollywood films are these days.

Personally I like it, gives the film more room to breathe. More opportunities for character development, more action set-pieces etc. X-men 3 is reportedly one of those films which could've used a 140min runtime.

I could wish for 10 hour long version of the best films of all time. If anything films for me are not to long, its that they dont make the entire film great. Thats the problem.

Some masterpieces are long, but I wish they were far, far longer like The Thin Red Line.

Still Pirates I like the 1st film, even if it was overared as hell by most people. I didnt find Depp very good I must say, still I cannotwait to see Chow Yun Fat in another big hollywood film, and this may be his 1st hollywood hit

You should come to the rental store I work at then. The boss lets us the workers decide which films we need. Needless to say that I am responsible for the Asian movie section and the partly for the anime section as well.

Hmmm... out of the 4 Hollywood films he has done, there was only one which IMO really sucked, which is "Bulletproof Monk". "The Replacement Killers" was an okayish actionfilm. "Anna and the King" is a wonderful drama with two great actors in the lead. And his best Hollywood film "The Corruptor" is one hell of a great cop thriller. Love it.

i agree, this movie is really great, actually one of my more favourite of chow's movies, (i didnt see that many

) maybe because jodie foster is a great actress too. but its a brilliant movie.

and i also agree about bulletproof monk, been subjected to that far too often, since my aunt likes the movie so does my dad, they should use it as a form of torture

I like all Yun Fat's Holywood films so far, just none have done much in the way of box office or even critical aclaim, he needs to work with bloody Woo!!!!!

Still This is a masive chance for Yun Fat to become a major star in Hollywood as no way in hell with Pirates 3 flop after the what parts 1 and 2 have done
