Could there be a glimmer of hope? Maybe we shouldn't be too excited just yet:
If FRANCE is getting anamorphic transfers, the DVDs = Sale.
I bet they'll have burnt in French subs or something
Fuck, just when I decided I WOULDN'T buy theseDigital Bits wrote:from The Digital Bits:
"And here's a little something that's very interesting: Our friend Arnaud Calistri, who runs the DVDRama.com website in France, e-mailed me yesterday to say that Fox France has confirmed with him that the original versions of the Star Wars films to be released on DVD there will be in anamorphic widescreen (enhanced for widescreen 16x9 TVs). As many of you know, they were announced for release here in the States and elsewhere in non-anamorphic (letterboxed) widescreen only, causing a furor among fans (and rightly so). This news, if true, means one of two things: Either Lucasfilm quickly got their act together when fans complained and created new anamorphic masters for the DVD release everywhere (and it just hasn't been announced here in the States yet), or France is getting better DVDs that the rest of the world. If they DID get their act together, expect Lucasfilm's fan relations guru, Steve Sansweet, to make a massive deal about it the company's Star Wars panel at Comic-Con next week. If they DIDN'T get their act together, and France IS getting better discs, expect fans to make a massive deal about it. We'll ask all the right people to see if we can find out the truth of the matter. Of course, we'll let you know."

Oh dear.....

The Digital Bits wrote:We've got some more interesting standard DVD news to report today, starting with a follow-up on that French Star Wars DVD controversy we mentioned the other day. We've gotten a follow-up e-mail from our friend Arnaud at DVDRama in France. He's actually had the chance to see, with his own two eyes, the new Star Wars DVDs being released there, and it turns out Fox France was wrong. Someone in marketing over there apparently still doesn't know what anamorphic means. The special edition versions of the films on Disc One of each set are anamorphic, but the original theatrical editions on Disc Two of each are definitely NOT anamorphic. They're just letterboxed widescreen as we expected. Fox France has apparently apologized for the confusion, and we definitely appreciate Arnaud's efforts in confirming the truth of the situation. So to sum up, France is getting the same sub-par Star Wars DVDs as the rest of us. 'Nuff said.

I will not be buying these either, and i'm pretty sure i'm more fanatical and more of a hardcore purist about the original Star Wars films then anyone on the board.
[rant]
This is absolutely outragous that lucasfilm is pulling a stunt like this. This has gone beyond even marketing/moneymaking standpoints, and past into pure insanity. Do they enjoy toying with the fans like this??!! Fucking re-release of the shit versions and the originals included as a damn bonus feature, NON ANAMORPHIC!? ..when they know GOOD AND WELL that the originals are the ONLY thing everyone wants....and everyone has already bought the first fucking boxset anyway, so the profit has been made off the shit versions! ..WHY THE HELL NOT JUST GIVE EVERYONE WHAT THEY WANT!!!??? ..there would still be yet ANOTHER wave of massive profit!
Fuck lucasfilm...please nobody buy this.
[/rant]
I will be fine sticking with my dvd copies of the widescreen laserdiscs.
Its the same damn transfer anyway.

Has this been confirmed? I read they were using them but I've read nothing about them being tweaked or remastered or not as the case may be.I will be fine sticking with my dvd copies of the widescreen laserdiscs.

If so agreed. Do you still have a LD Player then?
If they were anamorphic I'd more than likely upgrade but as they're the not the quality "will" be vastly inferior to the new remastered versions so will be unwatchable, all IMO. If they're unwatchable why would I want to own them. I can live with DD2.0 (the 5.1 remixes are great) but non-anamorphic, screw them!

That is more then enough for collectors purposes...but i can't stop thinking about how amazingly great it would be to watch Han shoot first in a nice cleaned-up transfer in its full 2:35:1 glory.

LD is a player? Never knew that.
Anyway...
Did it ever come to your attention that the whole "Star Wars"-project is one big ass experiment started by crazy scientists? Over the decades they have tried to find out how idiotic fans/customers etc. can be when it comes to something they seem to apotheosise/lionise/idolise/adore, you name it. It all started with the harmless invention of merchandise. After getting the long-lost lightsaber (which came with the original Yoda figure) from eBay for hundreds of dollars, the average fan will next buy these DVD editions. And George Lucas can finally buy sharks with laser-beams attached to their heads for the ditch around his palace in order to keep angry fans out. He should make a new movie instead if you ask me.

They have been restored, but to 1992/93 standards; they wouldn't have been digitally restored (all the Lowry-esque digital wizardry didn't exist yet), but by hand/chemically. Plus they'll be low res thanks to being in letterbox.brad wrote:Assuming they've been cleaned up.
I got the joke. I'd imagine you'd rather be a playah, if you weren't tied down.thelostdragon wrote: OK, guess somebody didn't get the joke here.
