It's the lazy way of writing powers. Someone couldn't be bothered finding ² or ³. In some cases, like when you're dealing with higher powers, you have to use it, but as far as I can remember, none of the questions went to that level of difficulty

One of the questions in the math test made me go "huh?" initially. The one about What sort of number is -8 or something.

Its irrational. Irrational = negative.
