Why is the world cruel with spoilers?

Post by BiscLimpkit »

Aye I was just thinking that the world is cruel with spoilers.

Primary source is of course trailers. Now I don't mind teasers, but when you get 5 minute theatrical trailers that pretty much summarise the entire film, then it sorts of defeats the purpose of watching it.

Then there are people who openly spoil films within a conversation, blissfully unaware of the damage they've caused. Or perhaps they are aware and are just being wankers for the fun of it? I don't know.

But it's not just people. The media quite often like to giveaway spoilers to films and TV, as if they are doing the public a favour. Honestly, I've heard DJs say "Ok you're not going to believe this but [insert character name] is going to die in the next episode of [insert show here]. Radio 1 revealed a huge Lost spoiler the other day. I feel sorry for anyone waiting for the DVD or something.

I stopped reading Empire because they spoil a lot of the classic films, which I've not seen but intend to. Total Film are even worse - they spoil current films with their dreaded enjoyment chart (wtf).

Whenever trailers are shown in the cinema, I purposefully shut my eyes (or look away). I believe I enjoyed Superman's effects when I saw them for the first time, instead of in a trashy trailer.

No one is forcing you to watch them. Agreed some are to long but 5 minutes you're stretching the truth now, well except for HK trailers they really do show the entire film.

Personally I love them to get an indicator if I want to see a film. Teasers on the other hand piss me off, they show nothing and just annoy me they haven't done so. I suggest you don't watch Trailers any more.
BiscLimpkit wrote:Then there are people who openly spoil films within a conversation, blissfully unaware of the damage they've caused. Or perhaps they are aware and are just being wankers for the fun of it? I don't know.
The simple fact is:

A: Most people treat films as entertainment so don't give a hoot if they know what's about to happen. Few take films as seriously as they deserve. You hear it all the time: I don't care who the director is, he's not important to me. Without him/her you wouldn't have the film you love idiot. All people seem to care about is the actors.

B: To one person a spoiler is a BIG plot device, to another it's any detail of the film at all. A spoiler is incredibly subjective.
BiscLimpkit wrote:Total Film are even worse - they spoil current films with their dreaded enjoyment chart (wtf).
What's that about?

The average multiplex doesn't show a film until 15-20 minutes after the start time, 30 minutes on opening night. I never turn up on time as you just have to put up with annoying adverts (before the trailer starts, I like trailers) and people who really don't know how to "Shut the fuck up"

Trailers are of course helpful sometimes. For instance, I was interested in Michel Gondry's latest film 'The Science of Sleep' and the other day I saw the theatrical trailer on Apple.com and now I'm really looking forward to seeing the film.

I don't like trailers that show the most important parts of a movie:

-House of Flying Daggers: Kaneshiro firing arrows through the forest in slow-mo.
-Bittersweet Life UK trailer: The face-off between Sun-Woo and his boss.
-Wu Ji All trailers: QinCheng flying like a kite.

There's no surprise anymore.
I want to see trailers, but I don't want to see the best bits before watching the films.
I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

Trailers are pathetic on the whole, some inform and excite, but really most SPOIL THE FILM! Superman Returns for instance is bile, that trailer ruins the film I havent seen the film yet but I now know key moments and am now waiting for them moments in the film. I could say some but I wont spoil it for you!

There is no way you can avoid trailers in the cinema, as only tossers turn up while the trailers show or even worse after the film has started. Poeple who turn up late deserve to be banned and beaten with bricks! LOCK THE FUCKING DOORS AS SOON AS ITS TIME!

People should shut their ignorant mouths until I have seen the film I say, I avoid most threads on the net with talk of films I aint seen and as soon as it looks like some idiots spoiling things I wont go back to a thread until I have seen a film. I personally want to know nothing about most films, but thats imposible.

Idiots read loads before hand and ruin the film, they read every review etc.. they are the people who get on my tits  dont even know why they watch films at all, may as well just go from others opinions as thats what ends up happeing, others opinions influence their opinions. I could name a few people on this site who are like that.

Trailers are a form of advertising so obviously they're going to show the best bits. The whole point is to make people want to see the film and on the whole they work very well at achieving that goal.

As "Gasteropod" for example has just proven.

If you watch a trailer you've only got yourself to blame if it gives away what "you" consider a plot spoiler. Like I said what exactly is a spoiler is very subjective.

I watch trailers as well I like them knowing full well I'll be seeing footage before I see the film. I take this on board when I watch them. I also know trailers move so fast that it's likely I'll have forgotten most of them by the time I see the film.

Agreed to give the Superman twist away is clearly a spoiler but no trailer I've seen has done that, for example.

Go on then Romero the Dictator!

For the record I read the Superman Returns review at DVD Times before I saw the film and ended up disagreeing with the vast majority of it it.

All I know is I don't like to see shit films so if the majority of people, critics, reviews say it's shit I've saved 2 hours and £6.

For example: I was all set to see "The Da Vinci Code" but seeing as it's had nothing but negative reviews (I've not heard one good report) I ended up not going.

I will catch it at some point as it has a talented cast but I'm not sorry I've not seen it at the cinema.

To be fair the Superman twist isn't at all hard to guess.

I've not seen the movie and read little about it but I figured it out immediately.

Well I wouldnt beleve a word others say, as most people are total idiots. Some of the best films of the last few years have got shit feedback, who gives a shit! not me I have my own mind and see what I want to, not what others tell me to.

Its pretty sad to be put off a film by others opinions, even if you have looked forward to it for ages. Get your own brain and stop using other peoples.

As far as showing the "Best Bits" in trailers, thats totally wrong as most spoilers are NOT the best bits and dont attract people at all in a trailer. You must have one bad memory if you forget all the bits in a trailer.

Agreed look at Alexander BUT there are far more films released than I can possibly watch so I must decide.

Thanks for your wise words but I did specifically say that I avoid trailers (but not teasers, which IMO should replace all theatrical trailers). Even though no one is forcing me to watch trailers, spoilers still leak without my permission. :x

I hope not. They're completely worthless and show you nothing. Complete waste of time.

What twist is this? The one about Superman having a son? That's not a "big twist", hardly relevant to the plot; he kills a thug with a piano, big whoop. Lois would've lived if she had been raped.

If that's not avoiding trailers, or trying to avoid them, then I don't know what is. Don't think anyone else shuts their eyes at the cinema during trailers (well I wouldn't know obviously).

No. They let the public know that a film is coming, roughly what it's about and generate interest without the need to reveal major plot points. I love going into a cinema with NO idea what the film is about. Therefore I'm going in with an unbiased mind, with no dodgy reviews from critics or hype to spoil my enjoyment.

I watched it at the cinema - and liked it. You should really get it some day and make up your own mind.

I´m sure that lots of the bad reviews were due to the church and religious writers. To me those people don´t seem to understand what a movie is about: Entertainment. Not an insult against the church.

The Da Vinci Code I didnt bother reading reviews even after I saw the film as I didnt think much of it at all, apart from it was a big waste of cash which could have been put to much better use than making such a bland film.

The thing is some people loved it, and some hated it, I saw it as it was the only new film I hadnt seen and its worth 1 watch anyway.
Still some wankers ruined the ending for that as well  people need a hard smack in the face really. Still the trailer ruined a lot of that film anyway, I knew many of the twists before I saw the film just from the pathetic trailer  easily one of the single worst trailers of all time for a BIG film.

I had SEVEN ruined for me  so that films felt pants when I watched it as i knew exactly how it ended.

The thing is a lot of TV spoils them without a second thought, even the news has ruined films ending for me! the god damn BBC news for gods sake!

I just think too many people are born to ruin films (and TV shows!) for others

Brad your a pratt sometimes and I may ruin a film you are looking forward to to see how you act :D

"Cocksuckers" is suposed to be funny, as are many of my comments take from films and shows  you dont watch the things I do I suspect.

Hey you are very different to me then, films spoiled are ruined forever. Seven is a film I never want to see again, as I will always be thinking of that end, all the way, for eternity and the idiot who spoiled it for me and my anger at wanting to smack him hard. He ruined the fim forever for me and I cannot look at that film ever again in the same way as if I went in fresh and didnt have the plot ripped to shreads by a moron.

I could post right now a few massive spoilers for films that are yet to come out and then see how others act, I could even have one masive one I was told as my tag line I bet you many people would be rather angry to put it mildly.

Depends on how integral a twist is to the movie (i.e. Shyamalan's films, Dead Man's Chest, Fight Club, Saw etc).

You're right, it isn't the end of a movie but it does take a fair whack out of the enjoyment factor.

Brad, I've rarely come across a bad teaser but have definitely seen plenty of bad trailers. Most, if not all, teasers reveal just the right amount of information. I guess you need to know exactly what type of film you're about to watch, as well as some idea of what others think of it, whereas I don't.

No you are fogetting the way the twist is broken to you. THAT counts for a massive amount of my anger.

For instance The Sixth Sense which I had seen the film before hand and was on my second viewing with a friend who had not seen it.
About 15 minutes into the film the back doors opened and some muppet stood there and shouted out the twist! I couldnt beleve it and I am sure everyone in that audience would love to have hit him, everyone!
I am sure everyone would be rather pissed off about that! I luckily had seen the film so I was ok, but everyone in that auidience was fuming and my friend said it ruined the entire film.

Even now thinking of that film brings back memories of that dickhead in that audience! its imposible to ever get that from my mind, unless your short term memory guy Bradavon that it :)

Experiencing a twist, or a massive plot point isnt my problem. I have seen some of my favourite films of all time, many times and will enjoy them forever. The thing is I saw the film and saw it om my own terms, and experienced the whole film the way I wanted to.

Now if you had the twist / big evil spoiler told to you, in a memorable way even! that surley is always going to be in the back of your mind, if it isnt you are very forgetfull.

If you think I get angry about this you aint seen many other forums in your lives thats for sure, I am positvly a cute furry animal compared to some of the crazy buggers on other forums. Some forums ban people for spoiling (a good thing I say!), and there was a case in amererica a few years back where someone shot someone for ruining a film.

I can understand some people saying its only a film, but come on it DOES ruin some films forever and if that just happenes to turn out to be your favorite film of all time you will always have that film tarnished, as you only get one fresh viewing of any film.
If it doesnt for you, good, it does for most people that for sure. I have had more films spoiled for me over the years to know I would hate it to happen to anyone else as it really gets to me a lot.

If its only a film, your also on the wrong forum thats for sure.

Huh? Are you addressing the right person?

I'm sure I can be a prat at times but I wasn't talking to you nor where you talking to me. What comments are you referring to? Assuming you have the right person that is.
romerojpg wrote:"Cocksuckers" is suposed to be funny, as are many of my comments take from films and shows
I know it was but then I wasn't replying to your comment at all so I've idea what you're talking about.

I really think you're getting me mixed up with Shen here (probably because I'm more vocal and visit more often). It was Shen who replied to your comments NOT me.

Huh? What? Where?
romerojpg wrote:you dont watch the things I do I suspect.
Without some examples I couldn't answer that.

Yep you're DEFINITELY getting me and Shen mixed how (how I'm not sure). It was Shen who replied about your Seven comments NOT me.

I was merely agreeing to Shen's part that these are just films and you need to calm down, again her words not mine. For the record I do agree with Shen, you watch films a second time don't you? Knowing full well what's about to happen. Well I do anyway.

Jeez Louise pick the right person to moan at :D
