CD WOW security

Post by grim_tales »

When I tried to log in to CD-WOW rentals this morning using Firefox I got a message saying the security certificate CD WOW uses to encrypt data had expired. :?
Is this a problem at their end or something I did? I've never had this message before.
Now I'm pissed off at asking my mum if she knew what was going on, she's moaning at me not to use it anymore, I'm not bloody cancelling my membership and losing all my DVDs I'll rent - as to when they'll sort it out, how the fuck do I know? :?
Sometimes I hate my mum, I really do.

Things will get better once you turn 18, Grim. Just a few more years of puberty left ;)

Exactly.
She says "I'm not having you use a non-secure site" or something. Never mind I never got that bloody message before  I'm sorry, "hate" is too strong a word but she does annoy me at times.
Strangely it seems OK in IE, which is why I cant work out if its their problem, mine or Firefox's (it expired yesterday morning apparently).
I've e-mailed CD WOW.

Grim: No offence but you're old enough to listen to your parents and then decide "for yourself". She's proven she doesn't have a clue about the Internet, i.e - not a reliable person to be speaking to about it. No doubt she's read 1-2 articles and is scared for life.

Why did you even tell her, you knew what she'd say. I'm sure you don't hate your parents that's strong.

I'm surprised you've not seen this before I get it from time to time. It's nothing to worry about it's just Firefox letting you know exactly what's going on. You can turn it off if you like (so it doesn't warn you). It doesn't mean the site isn't secure.

BTW IE never warns you, ignorance is bliss as they say. As long as the page is encrypted you'll be fine (look for the padlock on the bottom right hand corner).

CD WOW will probably be as confused as you are and will give you a generic reply that you must use Internet Explorer as that's all they support or some other such bollocks.

p.s - Moving to the correct forum.

Brad you're right. No offence taken :)
TBH I don't know why I told her... it must be just my nature.
I e-mailed CD WOW and they don't have a clue whats going on either as they said all their security was up to date, so God knows :? I even checked Firefox's security settings which seemed OK, so I was like WTF is going on :D
BTW in IE I get:
"The security certficate is expired or not yet valid" with a yellow exclamaition mark next to it.

It was allright this morning :) :?
BTW I aplogise for saying I hate my parents, that is too strong, but they do annoy me sometimes, I guess all mothers/fathers do :)

Clearing your cookies may help. I think a security certificate is sent from the website to your pc which expires after a certain period of time but that doesn't mean it's not working or more to the point the site isn't secure (I'm sure on the latter think I'm sure on the former).

If Grim's mom IS reading this, then I have one thing to say to her:

"Hi Grim's mom, welcome to BNB. Your sons is a nice decent lad and it seems like you've brought him up well. However, we are all a bit disturbed by his over-sexual remarks in Toge's Nice Bird Thread ( https://www.bulletsnbabesdvd.com/forums/ ... c.php?t=62 ), so you MIGHT want to take a look at that and have a talk with him about it. He might nee dpsychological help :)

Now I can't seem to log in to CD WOW using Firefox anymore??? It works in IE.
When I'm using firefox the info I enter just disappears and I can't past the initial login screen.
Englandfans (www.thefa.com/englandfans) doesn't work either.

1. Close Firefox and try again (all Tabs/Windows)
2. Clear your cookies

One/both of those is bound to fix it.

For some reason I still get the "Certificate has expired" message on CD-WOW rentals occassionally (I did just now) BUT if I click "I wish to continue" the web address comes up as: https://www.... whatever, with the lock symbol in the address and also the bottom right corner of the browser.

Surely this means CD WOW rental is secure??? :? Anyway they told me they were up to date.

Thanks. I think what the message is saying is that the certificate CD WOW use to verify its identity isn't valid, not that it isn't secure.

Hey Grim, please could you get the full message, it possible it may also be that the secure certificate they have put on, isn't a trusted certificate? Ie Your internet browser hasn't got that address for SSL? I have seen this a lot of time at work. I work with ecommerce site, so SSL is something I alway work with.

What it actually says (in Firefox) when I try to sign in sometimes is:
Server Certificate Expired

"dvdrental.cd-wow.com" is a site that uses a security certificate to encrypt data during transmission. But it's certificate expired on 28/8/2006 11:52.

You should check to make sure your computer's time (currently set to 13:28:44) is correct.

Would you like to continue anyway?
Then at the bottom there is option to "View Certficate"

If you say "Yes, continue" a lock symbol still appears in the web address and it says https://.. etc.

Okay checked it, okay the certificate did expire on 28 July 2006, But I pretty sure CD-Wow site will update it with the new certificate when it comes to them. It normally provided by the hosting company for cd-wow. Anyway if you click on YES, continue, then the site is secure, so there is no problem at all.

The problem is that, if cd-wow was not to get this fixed, then https://dvdrental.cd-wow.com will not work. (As in Page Cannot be displayed)At the moment it is working, so pretty sure, after a few days/week the message will disappear as the hosting company will apply a new Thawe SSL certificate.
