New Paul Verhoeven film...

Post by BiscLimpkit »

... and it's in Dutch!

Zwartboek (Blackbook) trailer (18 MB).

Warning... contains naughty bits that are unsuitable for kids, non-Europeans and Grim.

Looks pretty good. I imagine it'll be better once we get the subtitles in place as well :)

And even though I've not seen many trailers with T&A in them, it still uses the known method of stealing music from other films.
Some things don't change, regardless of where the trailer's from :)

Bisc,

Pfff. I'm older than you :D
Interesting. Previously The Fourth Man (1983) was his last Dutch movie.

Wheres the music from?

Why? He's a shitty director who's only succesfull because of eitehr shock-value and/or sex. He makes B-movies but has a big budget.

Verhoeven was one of the few consistantly interesting directors in Hollywood.

Go watch Robocop again, that's one superbly crafted film.

Robocop is OK when it comes to story, but all the actors are pretty mediocre and cinematography is nothing to rave about. Also, again, Verhoeven makes full use of the shock-value to make it memorable...

I doubt it is Verhoeven's 'talent' that makes Robocop an enjoyable movie: It's the story itself.

Personally, I didnt care all that much for Robocop anyway.

Robocop is an intelligent and satirical sci-fi film. In Total Recall he's actually made a thinking man's Arnie film and Basic Instinct is a very good film for its genre.
Have you not seen the Fourth Man?

You're just jealous cuz he's successfully escaped the land of legalised marijuana, windmills, dykes, clogs and bestiality porn and you haven't.

It's a movie about a guy that gets turned into a cyborg.

Yeah there's more to it then that, and there are some slight layers of how we want our justice to be served, and all that... but Verhoeven mainly focusses on the B-movie aspect of it, and piles on the shocking stuff...

Could have been a much better movie if it would have had a decent cast, and if it would have gone more in-depth with some of the elements of the story...

I feel you're over-rating both movies. Total Recall is still Sci-Fi fluff, no matter how you look at it. Again with some bad acting, again with some shock-value, but if it were given to a more able director, it could have been awesome. The action was dissapointing for such a big budget movie, and set-design was pretty horrible as well.
There are some nice babes in it, though.

Basic Instinct. Decent movie, nice soundtrack, nice performances (though not great), but all in all, it will just be remembered for Stone's beavershot and sex-scenes. It's just a mediocre thriller with a big budget, and it just used sex as the main selling point. Nothing more nothing less.

Yes, if David Cronenberg (a true master director) had made Total Recall like it was originally intended, the film would've been far better. Closer to K. Dick's original vision.

And are you kidding about the cast? Peter Weller is a fucking robot and is perfect for the role! And Kurtwood Smith is great as a slimy villain: "Just gimme ma fuckin' phone call!"

You're thinking of the woman with three boobs again, aren't you? :P

Total Recall, Robocop and Starship Troopers are all 5 star films and ST esspecially is a staggering film that I thinks one of the best films ever made, seeing it at home does it NO justice at all I saw it many times in the cinema and its stunning on a hundred foot cinema screen. Anything He makes I will watch, even if it turns out to be shitty. A lot of his non english language films I am no fan of mind you and his silly american sex films.

IMO -

* Starship Troopers - Uber shit, seriously bad and overrated film
* Showgirls - If it were possible it's even shitter than Starship Troopers
* Basic Instinct - His best. I like this.
* Total Recal - Decent, just about a keeper
* Robocop - Not bad, not great either, overrated. Intelligent my ass.

Verhoeven makes porn films without the porn :D , you get the same type of immediate thrill out of both except one involves direct sex and the other doesn't.

Crikey it looks nothing like a Verhoeven film except for all the compulsory for female nudity. It looks decent but has Verhoeven ever made a truly serious film? With no exploitation element that is.

It's also in German and English too.
