If so what's it like? I'm expecting it to be mega uncomfortable, what with being on the floor and all.
I'm gonna test out a Ryokan when I reach Kyoto - get into the whole authentic Japanese vibe. Although I don't know why these places are so expensive.... shared baths, paper walls, no furniture... not even a proper bed.
Ah well... maybe they include a geisha. 8)
Ever slept on a futon?

A futon... you mean a japanese bed on the ground?
I once slept on one, when I was in japan and we were in a hotel near Mt Fuji...
Cant remember much of how I slept, so I'm guessing it was OK. Not to bad and not to great. Not very memorable or else I would have remembered it.
It's probably expensive cause guys like you want to experience that whole thing, so they just rip off the tourists by being authentic. Personally, I would just have gone to a normal, comfortable hotel and enjoyed japanese TV plus the 21st century toilet

That's true. I've been told that Ryokans are tourist trap.
One reviewer said, "if I wanted to sleep on the floor and share a bathroom, I'd have gone to college and joined a fraternity." lol
Still, I'm willing to pay ridiculous amount of money to prove that I lived like a medievil Japanese for a few days.
Will be staying in much nicer hotels once I get to Tokyo... including some Love Hotels that are about to see some hot solo action from yours truly (oh yeah). 8)

If you want to live like a medievel japanese for a few days, why not attract some medieval disease and REALLY get that whole medieval experience...!?BiscLimpkit wrote:That's true. I've been told that Ryokans are tourist trap.

Seriously, if you want to waste money away, do it more wisely. Maybe use the money to go ona trip to a NON-tourist town/city, and get the same experience there for free (usually there are towns that WANT to become a tourist trap, so they offer the same experience but for much cheaper)
And about the love hotels: Just get some hand-lotion, close your eyes and do it in a normal hotel-room
(Ow... if you do score, we want, no...we NEED pics, for proof you see!?)

I've slept on a futon on the floor all my life. Very comfortable.
Allows you to rollover and fall without hurting yourself.

I used to be "the man who loves the movies you hate".
Now I'm just "that weird french guy with a cat avatar who comes to BnB once a year for no reason and then disappears again".

I cant believe we have granted mod-powers to a guy that can't even make it through the night without falling out of bed...(!)tom2681 wrote:I've slept on a futon on the floor all my life. Very comfortable.

Seriously, I had a high-bed when I was younger, and once woke up during falling out of it: not a pleasant way to wake up

I also sleep onthe floor these days, though I stopped using a futon (now just a mattress) a few years back because I broke it having...errrr...too much fun. I also have a proper bed in another room of the house but never use it...
The quality and comfiness can vary wildly with futo ns, a good one is as comfortable as the most comfy classic bed, the crap ones are about as comfy as having your testicles waxed with a porcupine..
