Bo-ring!!!!grim_tales wrote:AFAIK they are showing stuff like Evil Dead, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Idiots, Kids.. etc.
As well as the Banned on C4 documentaries. Seen Kids and The Idiots and have Evil Dead on R1, but not Texas Chainsaw
Jesus, have Ch4 no imagination whatsoever???
Exec #1: "Hey, guys, let's find a way to recycle some old movies we've already shown."
Exec #2: "How about another banned season. We can show the same shit as the first time?"
Exec #3: "Brilliant! That's why you take home a couple hundred K a year!"
I just hope the docs are worth watching......

What would you have shown then? Apparently TED is recieving its uncut premiere tonight (even though its been uncut in the UK on DVD for several years)
Cant they show stuff thats never been shown? Like an uncut In The Realm Of The Senses (I've never seen)?
You're going to tell me thats been shown already aren't you?
There's also an X-rated season with The Ads They Couldn't Show and stuff.

Only the video was. The rape of the nun lost a couple of seconds and a whole section of shooting up Heroin was removed. The DVD is uncut. The films is "worthy" in an arty sort of way, but considering the material it could have been great. I have little time for Abel Ferrara, even though this is strangely one of his more accessible movies.grim_tales wrote:Bad Lieutenant is being shown "uncut for the first time" on TV as part of the Banned season as well actually, on Wednesday. Is it any good? I might tape it. Was the UK DVD cut then?
I watched the crass, one-sided Banned on TV doc tonight. Notice how they made sure everyone who objected to extreme content was some kind of loon? An oppotunity for debate was squandered by Channel Four's everything for morons policy. Whilst I'm not in favour of censorship, tonight's programme only illustrated how pathetic most of the controversial material was. Makes you realise how easy and profoundly unimpressive all the swearing and sex on TV is. I found myself thinking so what? I have no issue with Footballer's Wives having mile high shagging, but the doc treated it like it was some kind of achievement! Oh, look, he said "cunt". How clever!! I didn't bother with the last part. Autopsy's and human suffering are not my cup of cha. I agreed with Paul Daniels on the Brass Eye programme. Child abuse is the one area that even as satire I can't laugh at. I'm not saying it should be banned just that I don't want to see it. But then that's what the off button is for.
P.S. Who was the blonde on the plane? Nice tits!

I sort of agree with what the assessment BTW, but on the other hand I didnt like the complainers much either, Mary Whitehouse lives!!
I found it odd they didnt like modern swearing/sex etc but didnt mind the racism in The Black And White Minstrel Show
Some parts were quite interesting though but like you I didnt bother with the autopsy bit.
IMO the reaction to the Brass Eye special was hilarious, it caused exactly the sort of reaction from the public and media it was trying to satirise.
Quite ironic really
Like Jerry Springer, Brass Eye made fun of the way the media treats and reports a central issue, rather than the issue itself.
Like you though, I didnt much like the attitude of the programme towards the complainers at times (even though I don't like them), it just felt a little patronising, with a kind of "Aren't these people stuffy twats" sort of tone of voice. Well some of them are, but they should have been reported fairly.
The part about what words are acceptable now was interesting (did you see Caprice getting blasted for saying c**t on morning TV? It was just the title of a play though). The presenters didnt notice it, but MP's did.
As to the words about race, why can you use some abbreviations like "Brit" but not others? What is the correct abbreviation for Pakistani? If you said a black person is a negro, why is that not offensive? They refer to each other as niggas etc, a lot of the time.
The blonde on the plane was Zoe Lucker (Tanya).
I found it interesting that the commentator said there isn't as much reaction to lesbian sex with (attractive) women or the idea of it as there is to gay male sex on TV. You only have to see the hype of Tipping The Velvet (I only saw the first episode but IMO it wasnt THAT explicit) or TATU to see this isn't the case? What do you think?
In 2003 (I think) TTV was called "the most sexually explicit drama the BBC has ever broadcast". IMO it wasn't all that, the UK DVD is rated 15 for a start.

I noticed that, which makes me think that perhaps they were actors? Their opinions seemed too convenient to the programme's agenda.grim_tales wrote:I found it odd they didnt like modern swearing/sex etc but didnt mind the racism in The Black And White Minstrel Show![]()
Exactly. This wasn't intelligent debate. It was a "fuck you" to "complainers".Like you though, I didnt much like the attitude of the programme towards the complainers at times (even though I don't like them), it just felt a little patronising, with a kind of "Aren't these people stuffy twats" sort of tone of voice. Paki, I would imagine. But it's not acceptable to use. It was at one point I've read until it became used primarily as a racial slur. It's like gay at one point didn't mean homosexual. What is the correct abbreviation for Pakistani?
That name is begging for a limmerick. The blonde on the plane was Zoe Lucker (Tanya).![]()

The whole thing was just one big 'aren't we great' episode. Someone at channel 4 seems to have got it into their head that a great way of bigging up channel 4 and making cheap programming at the same time is to create lists and subject areas that blatently promote either channel 4 as a whole or specific programs on the channel.
Last nights show was the most blatent yet with channel 4 being painted as the messiah of non conservative tv. However in recent months there have been the greatest cartoons list, the greatest movies list, both of which had a staggering amount of selections which channel 4 or film four owned. the movie list in particular was rife with films that would never in a million years make it onto any vaguely unbiased film persons top 20 (My beautiful laundrette for example)
As for the differentiation between the complainers views on sex, swearing and racism, its the one thing the show did cover quite well, this idea that whats socially unnacceptable now was considered fine back in the day, the complainers they picked out for the show were merely from that older social set. It is wrong that they view things in this way but we cant turn back time, thats just who they are.
I should know, my grandparents more than a little racist, i won't go to chinese or indian restaurants at all with them if I can help it due to some of the comments they come out with, but when i confront them with the subject they truly get confused. To us all humans are equal, science, ethics and society tell us so, for them schooling and society took it as basic fact that racial groups are not equal. They have improved a lot since I was old enough to realise what was going on but still, they make an effort because they believe me when I tell them some of the things they say are wrong, they are unable to identify such occasions themselves and no amount of pestering from me is going to change beliefs formed over 70+ years.

ahh but whilst these shows created quite a lot of hype, make a show with the same amount of explicitness but with 2 guys and there would likely be protest marches and things burnt... its not right but its a fact that the majority of the 'sun' driven male population of this country see a big difference between two women and two blokes.I found it interesting that the commentator said there isn't as much reaction to lesbian sex with (attractive) women or the idea of it as there is to gay male sex on TV. Mark and I thought the "complainers" were actors
I mean, I don't agree with their views or like their Mary Whitehouse rantings of Mediawatch but they weren't represented fairly and were just there so people can laugh. Their opinions seemed too convenient somehow, you know?
Yeah I know what you mean. I heard on another of the C4 programs that women were turned on by both lesbian and straight sex or porn.

Banned In The UK
Mark did you see the first part of Banned In The UK on Monday? Unfortunately I missed it
Part 2 (tonight) looks at censorship in the late 1980's, when Gerry Adams' voice was banned from radio.
Also check out X Rated: The Ads They Couldn't Show on Thursday on C4 at 10pm, before Banned In the UK.
Mordib whats wrong with My Beautiful Laundrette? Never seen it BTW, but a lot of these polls are rigged anyway, I mean Gladiator was No 6 in the 100 Best Films list or something? WTF?
Its' a very good film (IMO) but not that good.

Hey,
They're (C4) showing possibly more interesting films this week, Nei Labutte's controversial In The Company of Men (1997), Crimes of Passion (1984, I think?), Kubricks' A Clockwork Orange (1971), as well as.... *drumroll*....
SHOWGIRLS
I'm not tuning into that. Showgirls was awful. "So bad its' good"? Maybe, but it has to be bad first.
I've never seen ACO properly!

I saw the first two parts of the banned doc, missed the third one, saw the second half of the fourth. The non-film stuff was marginally more interesting. But I just don't like Channel Four's two fingers attitude to everything. Instead of a thoughtful, intelligent debate, we got a typical aren't we clever at the shit we've shown job that I could easily have lived with. I saw (most of) the Banned ads programme as well. Mostly immature, yet treated as though it were groundbreaking. Yawn. The films Ch.4 are showing are equally boring and all repeats I think.

Mark did you see X-Rated - The Sex Films They Tried To Ban last night? Compared to the crass Banned on TV doc this was actually quite a good one, with better content than Banned on TV (IMO), but it still had comments from nobodies (James King? Jessixa Stephenson?) and stupidly, uncut scenes couldn't be shown so out came out that massive "X" symbol
I didnt know Russ Meyers "Vixen!" (strangely a film that Channel 5 seem to like and plays uncut AFAIK) was banned in so many US states in 1968 (even now, it is still banned in Ohio).
I always thought it was banned in Britain but not the US.
How did C4 get away with showing some of the Traci Lords clips?
Were they only "illegal" in the US?
That "Some Young Girls" one did indeed look dodgy
