The original collector's edition was released way back in 1998 and during that time it wasn't hard to find letterboxed
(non-anamorphic) DVDs. Tremors was one of them. Mastered from a 1995 laserdisc transfer that had been filtered
through DNR, Sharpening and contrast boosting, Tremors looked average at best. By today's standards the print is a travesty.
Shots like the one of the Graboid, for instance, look like a taped from cable VHS from the 1980s, noise reduction
galore, low bit-rate compression and dirt.
The 2005 DVD found as part of the Attack Pack
collection is a blessing that is so close to becoming 100% perfect but falls short in a few areas, mostly in regards to edge
enhancement. While a huge portion of EE has
disappeared there is still some small amounts present. One thing the discs does well is present film grain. This HD
mastered transfer is brilliant in it's detail. Framing wise it has been opened up at the top but features slightly less
at the bottom and even smaller amounts at the sides. Dirt is hardly a problem as a lot of it has been fixed. Plus, it's a 16X9 transfer!

Cool, Tremors is finally anamorphic. Is it only available as a flipper in the R1 series boxset, Joe?

Yep. It has a 5.1 Dolby digital upgrade from the original 2.0
Unfortunately the 2.0 is dropped but it sounds a lot better.

No kidding. It doesn't even mention on the back that the first two are fully restored! You have to know your stuff to see that it says anamorphic widescreen. I say that and the 5.1 and assumed it would be a new master and I was right. I didn't expect something this good though!
It's a good price at about $20.

I only picked up the 1998 DVD recently. I had no idea a re-release was out. I presume it's only part of a box set? If so I'm not so bothered I only wanted the original.

Speaking of films only in box sets. It's about time the Robocop R1 SE got released separately.

I'm not interested in the Criterion and the non-R1 versions are messed up by using integrated branching to add the DC footage back in, the pauses aren't big but frankly we shouldn't be getting pauses in the first place. The R1 SE only has the DC but is only part of the box set.

As far as I know it is only part of the box set. It can be bought for a good price though.
