Here we go again...
More changes to the films? What could he possibly change?
I still can't decide whether to get the LE set, its disappointing the TC's are letterbox but at least theyre on DVD, for years we didnt even get that. AAARGHH....

You'd have to be stupid not to know that Lucasfilm is going to have big DVD release plans with which to celebrate the anniversary, and we've been telling you that was the case for many months now. Indeed, during our last visit to the Ranch for the DVD release of Episode III, producer Rick McCallum confirmed that a box set of all six films was going to happen eventually, and animation director Rob Coleman even let it slip that the puppet Yoda from Episode I had already been replaced with a new CG Yoda to match Episodes II & III for the "future" release. T-Bone over at Star Wars Universe recently speculated about this box set, and we've been quietly checking in with our industry sources on it as well. Well, we've confirmed it: There IS a big, ultimate, 6-film Star Wars anniversary DVD box set planned for 2007. There will be more changes to the films, and there will be LOTS of new, never-before-seen special features - all the good stuff that was held back by Lucasfilm from the original Trilogy DVD release a few years ago. Think deleted scenes and more. We don't know if good, genuinely-REMASTERED versions of the original theatrical editions of the films will be included or not (though how you could call the set "ultimate" without them, we don't know). We don't expect high-definition versions yet, as those formats are just too new. We don't have ANY other details for you yet, so please don't ask. But as you consider whether or not to purchase the "limited edition" DVDs due on 9/12... we thought you should know that more IS absolutely on the way next year. 'Nuff said for now.
As always, please keep in mind that titles discussed here are tentative and are subject to change until officially announced by the studios.

a couple of things though...
LUCAS transfers will be better than LD conversions out there, simply because LUCAS uses the LD master - whereas everyone else are digitizing the LDs - which in many ways are "inferior" to the master. (A lot of the pirates out there are adding filters and stuff to make'em look better though).
X0 will create "hidef transfers", meaning they will be available in more than letterbox quality. HOWEVER, since they've only been working with digitized laserdiscs (even if from the best available hardware around period) their source material is inferior to the laserdisc master. WE may see the X0 project scratching what they've done and "improving" upon the offical DVD's instead (depending upon the quality of the DVD conversion of the LDMaster)...

So long, and thanks for all the fish!

Couldnt I buy these and set my TV to Zoom 16/9 mode when watching the TC's? They probably won't look very good though.
Here's a French review of Jedi (Theatrical and 2004 editions).
Can Tom translate?

Poor video for the Theatrical versions.

You can see clips of the '77 (O-OT versions) here.
Its hard to tell since these are DivX versions but IMO the clips don't look too bad. TBH I really am on the verge of saying "Fuck this" and getting them despite the non anamorphic-ness, I'll know I'll kick myself later.
We don't know if the O-OT will be in the 2007 box (I'm betting not).

I'm guessing:
* A Big ass 10 disc box set (at least 10 discs)
* More tinkering of the Prequel trilogy
* Yoda CGI in TPM
* The current DVDs have already been tinkered with from the theatrical prints
Lucas as we know will NEVER be happy. I'm not surprised by this new news as lets face it we don't have a full box set yet.
Will I bother? I seriously doubt it. I'd buy a TPM: DC IF it was vastly different and not just tinkering but that's not going to happen. I can't think of ANYTHING that really needs changing, otherwise.
Grim: You'll be pissed whatever you do when comparing them to the new SE DVDs.

Yuck no way, in my experience anyway.EvaUnit02 wrote:Depends on the size of your TV. On a 32" it would look fine.

TPM: The less boring cut - that'd be the day. Lucas actually made the DVD version LONGER than the theatrical cut by reinstating the deleted Coruscant taxi scene. Fuck, TPM was SO BORING.bradavon wrote:I'd buy a TPM: DC IF it was vastly different and not just tinkering but that's not going to happen. Thanks Eva.
My added comments to the review:
I was so chuffed to hear the Original Cuts where coming up until I heard they've be non-anamorphic and form the Laserdisc print. Thanks for the review as it has proven to me they look a disaster.
No offence Chris but I think your love of the original cuts is hinder your opinion of the 2004 DVDs. The Original Cut DVDs looks an awful.
Put another way: Why would I pay full price for bootlegs? When I already own the original cuts on bootleg DVDs for considerably less money? Sure I would if they were better quality but this is not the case.
I just know if I bought these I could never actually watch them when you compare how dreadful they look in comparison. It would be like by an album on cassette or a VHS copy of Star Wars.

I no longer believe for a second the 2004 versions are Lucas' Director's Cut. He has changed them so many times over the years. I wouldn't be at all surprised the HD versions will be changed again. Technology will have moved on again by then.that the 2004 DVD Special Editions represented his vision of the Star Wars trilogy.
Exactly. My bootlegs have rare interview and behind the scenes footage that will never be shown again. However, when you know that there are versions of this film floating around with commentary tracks, isolated scores, Easter eggs and more, Lucasfilm’s offering doesn’t look quite as attractive.

They're £11.99 here (without discount) - what region are they? Australia?
