:D
Arsenal were much better today. Shame Gilberto missed the penalty though, oh well. Lehmann was very good as well today.

Now our season has started :D

Both would work fine.

Pretty much every sport is 'nihilistic' when you break it down to 'guys running after a ball' or 'guys punching eachother'.

However, we like playing it and we enjoy watching it, cause we like seeing people compete to see who's best...

It's entertainment when you watch it, and it's healthy when you do it.

Just like porn.

by nihlistic i mean it goes against every aspect of our intristic nature...

and article i read recently sums it up fine:
theweeklystandard wrote: What is it that is unique to the physical makeup of human beings that sets us apart from the animal world? Two things: Our large brains and our grasping hands with opposable thumbs. Our big brain is why we're called homo sapiens, thinking man. And our ability to use our hands to grasp and manipulate objects is why one of our early ancestors was designated homo habilis, handy man. Human beings are thinking toolmakers. We're able to imagine the arrowhead in the stone and use our hands to carve it out of the rock. These two uniquely human traits have allowed us to become the dominant species on the planet.

Yet soccer flies in the face of nature. In almost all other sports, the head is protected against injury. Players wear helmets and try to avoid contact with sticks, bats, balls, elbows, fists, roadways, goalposts and other things that might inflict injury on that big brain that gives humans the ability to plan ahead, calculate, strategize, coordinate eye and hand movements, anticipate the consequence of actions--in other words, to play the game.

But soccer players use their heads, deliberately, to contact the ball. This is contrary to all human instinct, which is to keep the head out of the way of danger. Duck, you idiot! Protecting the head against injury is deeply rooted in our nature. It's an evolutionary survival response. Sacrifice a limb if you must, give up an arm or leg, but protect your head at all costs. Yet in soccer the player is encouraged, no, expected to hit the ball with his head. This is as stupid an action as a human being can undertake.

Secondly, any game which prohibits the use of the hands is contrary to nature. Opposable thumbs allow humans to grasp things (thumbs on other primate hands such as chimps and orangutans are splayed out the side and are not truly opposable.) This is why the games human beings play involve holding things such as baseball bats, golf clubs and hockey sticks, or to grip and throw objects like a ball or a Frisbee.

Soccer denies its players this most basic human ability. Players cannot catch or throw the ball. But they can hit it with their heads. If one were to set out to invent a game fundamentally at odds with human nature, soccer would be it. Place the head with its big brain in constant danger, and prohibit the use of the hands. Soccer denies to its players the very attributes that make human beings, the thinking toolmaker, human.

Actually, the donkey would have a significant advantage over humans in soccer. It has four legs rather than two. The donkey has no hands or opposable thumbs, nor any need of them in order to play soccer. And smashing its head into a soccer ball probably would not cause any diminution of equine IQ. Soccer, then, would appear to be a game better suited to dim-witted quadrupeds than to human beings.
article: link

im not saying other sports arent as nihlisitic, boxing is a good example...lets beat the shit out of each other just to see who's the hardest" but just football goes against our built in defences and traits...

Obviously facetious, but then the upshot of the game is that players develop levels of dexterity that some can barely achieve with their hands.
And heading the ball isn't mandatory. You can use your chest to bring the ball down if you jump up for it, or if you're being flashy, go for an bicycle kick :P

But what you're also forgetting is that sports, in general, were designed as a replacement for that other element of human nature: conflict. If the competitive nature of man can be sublimated through sport, then why not?

Human beings are contradictions anyway :P

This is so in the wrong forum

"The human race got so good at war, it couldn't have one anymore. It had spent so much time perfecting and practising the art of genocide, developing more and lethal devices for mass destruction, that conducting a war without totally obliterating the planet and everything on it became an impossibilty. They talked about how it still may be possible to have a small contained war, a little war, if you like - a warette. And this insane option might even have worked, if only people could have agreed on a new set of rules. But people being people, they couldn't.
War was out. War was a no-no. And like a small child, suddenly deprived of its favourite toy, the human race mourned and sulked, and twiddled its collected thumbs, wondering what to do next.
Towards the concludion of the 21st century, a solution was found. The solution was sport, and with war gone, people started taking their sport ever more seriously."

Football is like poetry in motion when played in the right spirit (like the way Arsenal played against ManU for example). None of that cheating, diving, dirty stuff. It's not called "The beautiful game" for nothing.

Football is the best sport there is. Fact.

I'm not a fanatic. I never even bother going to matches. But I'd rather watch it than any other.

That article is obviously facetious as Kurgan says, but you can't apply such silly logic to a game based on skill and stamina.

Football isn't about survival in real life so there's no reason not to use your head or feet to play.
